    DESCRIPTIONOld St Peter's is the former parish church of thevillage of Peterstone. The church was founded in1142 and is steeped in history. A beautifulbuilding with a great deal of ornamentalstonework both internally and externally andwith an exterior which is of grey limestone withlimestone dressings. The building is large,comprising a nave with aisles and chancel, athree-stage West tower, a vestry and a porch.The tower is three storeyed with crockettedfinials and has carved figures of saints on its fourfaces. The nave, and its hammerbeam roof isfifteenth century, although restored, while thechancel and its roof are nineteenth century. Theinterior has been described as "beautifully calmand spacious".

    Perpendicular in style, and dating from thefifteenth century, the church underwent twosignificant restorations, the first following theGreat Flood in the early seventeenth centuryand then in the late nineteenth century.Described by the architectural historian JohnNewman as "the noblest and most beautifulPerpendicular church in the whole county", thebuilding was listed Grade I on 3 January 1963.(St Peter's Church, Wentlooge, n.d.)

    The view from the tower is magnificent, lookingas it does into four, sometimes five counties,with a panorama on one side of the Welsh andMonmouthshire mountains, and on the southside, a long stretch of the Bristol Channel withthe Mendip Hills beyond.

It lies inthe community parish of Wentloog and theelectoral ward of Marshfield. Tredegar HouseCountry Park is close by with its botanicalgardens set in 90 acres of beautiful countrysideand a large lake makes it a beautiful place to visitand enjoy a walk.
