Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 5, 2020

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to all of us with his most profound

and beautiful words “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for

yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus

is telling us that we are never alone; if we follow his examples of

truth and love, we will find ourselves with an easy yoke and light

burden. Jesus is very concerned about us and our welfare. Jesus

suffered and died for us and our sins. Jesus carried our heavy

burdens with him. Following the way of holiness, being separate

from what others consider everyday life, is a lighter burden than

carrying the weight of anxiety, distress and guilt that results from

choosing to be part of the crowd that revels in its immorality.

Holiness is being different from the immoral crowd. Holiness is

accepting the love and the truth of Jesus. Is that burden, the

burden of living moral lives, really so difficult? Not when it is

compared to the burden of carrying sin, guilt, anxiety, and worry.

It is so much easier to carry the burden of Jesus. The burden

Jesus puts on us brings us joy, it brings us peace with ourselves in

this life and total union with Jesus.

One of the more difficult aspects of Christian life is ‘trusting

completely in the Lord”. Christians inherently find it difficult to

give up what they perceive as having ‘control’ in their lives.

Unfortunately, trying to keep this ‘control’ invariably causes

anxiety and distress, and further removes us from Jesus. When

one is able to fully trust our Heavenly Father and have faith as

strong as the Blessed Virgin Mary did; when we can truthfully

state ‘thy will be done’ and trust that the Lord is in control and is

watching out for the greater good, then we can freely get rid of all

our negative emotions and truly take on the yoke of our Lord.

This is not to say that we do not have free will; however; by

surrendering our burdens to the Lord, we realize that his yoke

truly is easy and his burden light.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said to an audience of young people:

“The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for

comfort. You were made for greatness.” Each one of us was

created for greatness. To achieve this greatness means that there

are times that we need reject the comfort of the world. There are

times that we need to be uncomfortable: When we are mocked for

our faith and our morality. When we are mocked for our refusing

to live for ourselves out of concern for others. When we are

mocked because we know that marriage is sacred. When we are

mocked because we know that we need avoid certain associates,

certain places, certain parties, because we know that they can

destroy us. When we are mocked because we are not part of the

crowd. None of these situations are comfortable. But we were not

created for comfort. We were not created to be part of the crowd.

We were created for greatness. That is the burden, that is the

yoke, that Jesus calls us to accept.
