Old People do the funniest things
IMPERIALISM
Here’s what happened….
I’ll give you some options…
Think about how you would handle this situation…
WWYD?
Fight!
• One day at school you notice a huge ring of students jostling and pushing. As you get closer, you hear some of the students yelling “Fight!” Like the rest, you want to see what is happening. Finally finding a vantage point, you see two students threatening one another. One is a good friend; the other is a former friend and current enemy who owes you money.
Would you…1. Turn away & leave because the fight does not
concern you
2. Convince a couple of friends to help you separate the 2 students before they hurt one another
3. Get into the fight on your friend’s side and punch out the former friend who owes you $ because he deserves it
4. Punch out both students to show the rest of the school who’s the toughest dude/chick at CLS.
Look at the # you chose…If you were a country, Here’s how you
would act…
Isolationism Collective security
Internation - alism
Imperialism
“The loner” “Team Player” “World Policeman” “World Bully”
Strict non-involvement in the
affairs of other countries
Working w/ other countries to
influence world affairs
Intervening in other countries’ affairs to promote important national interests
and safeguard national security
Extending power by taking land
around the globe or exploiting
weaker nations to serve national
interests

The US

IMPERIALISM:“Conquering other countries to
build an EMPIRE”
European Imperialism• Since late 1800s
• England owns ¼ of land & people in the world by 1900!
• “The sun never sets on the British Empire.”
Africa = main target• GB, FR, Belgium, IT, GER,
Portugal, & Spain
• Euros wanted raw materials & shoppers
• Distributed Africa among themselves.
“They were civilizing Them”
Isolation
to
Imperialism
How the US goes from …
American ImperialismWe want some land too!
Africa’s already taken…
Where are some other “weak” people?!?
1. “We want to be alone over here!”(Only power in the Western Hemisphere)
2. Get rid of products & make more$ & get more raw materials.
3. Proclaim Anglo-Saxon Superiority/World Police
Survival of the Fittest/Social Darwinism We as the “superior” people (white) had to help
the “inferior” people (minorities) from themselves
EX: Africans, Filipinos, South Americans…
3 Reasons we give to Imperialize:
Why that’s strange, I seem to have
inferior blood on my hands – oh I know,
I imperialized today!

Old Creepy guy
Our 1st Imperialistic
Gain…
Awkward quote:
“The Hawaiian pear is now fully ripe, and this is the golden hour to pick it”
US would make
TONS of $$ off of sugar.
Hawaiian Islands
• U.S. businessmen move in and slowly take over 75% of Hawaii’s wealth through sugar plantations.
• Businessmen force Hawaii’s King Kalakaua to allow only wealthy landowners to vote (giving them all control).
• Forced Hawaii to allow U.S. naval bases to be built (Pearl Harbor).
Kinda like slaveowners in Texas!
U.S. Takes Over Hawaii (1898)• King Kalakaua dies in 1891.• His sister, Liliuokalani, becomes
Queen.– She wants to give voting rights back to
everyone in Hawaii, not just rich people.
• U.S. Marines come ashore at night, while volunteer troops imprison the Queen and make Sanford B. Dole the new President.
Does “Dole” sound
familiar?
Hawaii is Annexed
• Pres. Cleveland is mad; told them to put the queen back on her throne.
• US recognize Hawaii as a republic but says no to annex unless maj of Hawaiians want it.
• 1897 Pres. McKinley is happy and annexes Hawaii. It is now a territory without the people having a say!
Which Type of Foreign Policy ?• Isolation
• Collective Security
• Nationalism
• Imperialism This one
Quick Write Response
• How does this make you feel?
• Would it alter your feelings about vacationing in Hawaii?
After HAWAII…
We Want More!
Spanish- American
War
US vs.
SPAIN
“We need to stop Spain! They’re putting Cubans in concentration
camps! Let’s make the world safe for democracy! FREE CUBA!”
But we really mean…“We want control of Cuba!
We want them to “owe us”! Get the Europeans out of here! (Western Hemisphere)”UNCLE SAM
US tries to free Cuba from Spain
• Cuba is only 90 mile off southern tip of Florida
• Cubans wanted independence from Spain• US connection strengthened by Jose Marti
who gathered men, money and arms in New York and launched a revolution from there.
• Spanish troops, under Valereano “Butcher” Weyler forced 1000’s into concentration camps - 1/4 of the islands population died in these camps
• The Cuban economy fell apart and its countryside was destroyed.
Butcher Weyler’s reconcentration policy at work
• Worry
• Investments of $50 million in sugar plantations were at risk.
• Stories were sensationalized by the American press
• President McKinley sought to avoid war with Spain.
Do you believe him?
BUT, Americans still debating IMPERIALISM…
FOR Imperialism… (let’s fight in the war)
“We get $$, they get a civilization AND we’re
promoting democracy!”
Against Imperialism… (no fight in war)
“We’re doing what the British did!”
WAYNE
Dougie Downer
Most Americans still against IMPERIALISM…
How do we get ALL Americans to support the war?...
William Randolph Hearst:
“I’ll show Americans there’s a
reason to fight in a war”
“REMEMBER THE MAINE!”
Spanish burying Cuban Children!
Americans MUST help!
Americans fell for it!
Would you?!?
• “Remember the Maine! To war with Spain”
• American newspapers blamed Spain.
• Sensational headlines & stories, little attention to facts, designed to grab the attention of the readers.
• William Randolph Hearst - New York Journal. “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war”
• Joseph Pulitzer - The World
• McKinley tried to negotiate with Spain but finally bowed down to public pressure.
• DeLome Letter forces th eissue
• April 9th Congress declared Cuba’s Independence and directed the president to use troops to end Spanish control of Cuba.
• . But the Teller Ammendment forbid US from taking procession of Cuba
Sure he did!
Cuba becomes a Protectorate
• 1900 Cuban Govt wrote a Constitution – that did not specify the relationship with the US.
- US insist on Platt Amendment- Limited Cuban independence
- US could intervene to protect independence
- Cuba couldn’t go into debt
- US can est. a naval base in Cuba
• This treaty remained effective for 31 years
• US Sec of the Navy - Theodore Roosevelt and George Dewey moved ships to Manilla
• May 1st - battle lasted 7 hours US fleet destroyed all 10 Spanish ships
• Consisted of cowboys, college students, ex-polo players & steeple chasers all looking for adventure.
• Roosevelt, now a lieutenant colonel, recruited them in a tap room in San Antonio,TX
• They were undisciplined and not very effective but embodied American enthusiasm.
• African Americans played central roles but got no credit.
• In Puerto Rico so feeble was Spanish resistance - “a moon light excursion”
• Battle of San Juan Hill was over in 2 days - one sided battle
• Oct 1898 Treaty of Paris• Spain granted independence to Cuba, ceded
Puerto Rico, Guam & Philippines to US for $20million
• New Territories added 100k sq miles & 10 million people to American empire
• Hawaii added in1898• Samoa added in 1899
Not so splendid!
• 385 Americans lost their lives - killed in action.
• 5000 died of tropical mosquito-born diseases such as malaria & yellow fever and the effects of bad food,(tainted meat) supplied to the army.
• African American soldiers were treated badly - led to race riots in June 1898.
Results of the “Fake” War:
1. Most Americans now Imperialist!
2. Cuba is “independent”
but US gets a military base
3. US gets Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines
Our “stepping stones” to a Pacific Empire!
US now a “School” for civilization
RECAP…
In a couple of years the US gets:
HAWAIICUBA
PUERTO RICOGUAM
PHILLIPINES
This is how we shift
into a
WORLD POWER!
AMERICA IS NOW
IMPERIALIST
