We will also unveil the new seat that we are dedicating to Mr. Jack Miller. We still have plenty of room for more pavers in Memory Walk so why not celebrate your time at “The Best School of All”. You can find details in the Aurora or on our website. Our membership continues to grow, mainly through “word of mouth” and the website. We encourage members to reach out to former school friends and ask them to join our Association. Next year will be quite auspicious for us as we plan a big celebration for our Fifteenth Anniversary. Many Old Hamptonians still remember the huge dinner dance that was held in the Moorabbin Town Hall quite some years ago when over nine hundred people attended. We would like to organise another such memorable occasion with as many members as we can get involved. Mr Bob Murray was Guest Speaker at the AGM and we have a copy of his book,” Sandbelters : Memories of Middle Australia”, which is an interesting read. One chapter is all about Hampton High in the forties, when Bob was a student, which I found quite nostalgic. In fact all through the book, one can identify with many of the names and places when we were young. I recommend it to all those who love to reminisce. All members of the committee were re-elected for a further year and we welcome new member, Jan O’Connor. Executive positions remain unchanged. We were very pleased to present Life Membership to Bruce Bathols, our Editor, and Graham White who held various positions and was involved in many projects. Congratulations to them both. Dedication of Plaques & Cairn: Gathering at 1.00 PM, a special Dedication of the Plaques on a seat and the Cairn will be held at Hampton High Reserve at 2.00 PM on Sunday 11th November 2012. Geoff Grant , passed awayon Monday 9th July 2012.at the age of 84. His funeralwas held at Holy TrinityChurch, Thomas Street,Hampton and was officiatedby local identity and formerCity of Bayside Mayor,Graeme Disney .Over 300 people attendedthe church service.

I first met Geoff Grant about 14years ago, when I answered anadvert for Old Hamptonians to meetand form a new association. Wemet at the hall of the Hampton StateSchool, and Geoff was the drivingforce in the establishnent of the TheOld Hamptonians Association as weknow it today. There were approx50 persons present, and we had noproblems forming a committee.Geoff was the founding President. With meagre funds available Geoffarranged for our first re-union,which was a resounding success.Nearly 900 ex-students attended. He had an uncanny manner abouthim, he knew the right people in theright places of the local council, andthrough sheer determination andnot taking“no” for an answer, he wasable to transform, through BaysideCouncil, the lower end of the oldoval, and have that made into whatis now known as the “Hampton HighReserve”.Geoff was one of the mostdetermined people I have ever had

the pleasure of meeting, and his Eulogyread out at his funeral service told howadversity was not a word in hisvocabulary. He was involved in localmunicipal affairs, too many to mentionhere. His other achievements with the OldHamptonians was in the procurementand laying of three plaques, depicting thenames names of the former Principals,House Captains, including a specialCairn with a sun-dial and listing the fourhouses of the school. The laying of thePavers project with the names ofvarious students was a masterpiece ofhis presidency.Geoff Geoff has lived respected, anddied regretted. Bruce Bathols - Editor

Geoffrey Thomas Grant7 May 1928 - 9 July 2012 Some memories from

Graeme VennGeoff had a great sense ofhumour, a fairly good golfinghandicap and his interest andinvolvement with communitylife, particularly Hampton, willbe treasured.Geoff featured in photos overthe years in the Aurora as anHHS student and a few yearsago had the lane adjoining hishouse named after his family,Grant Lane. His father was aformer mayor of the City ofSandringham and when I wasa teen, I delivered newspapersand chemists supplies to thevery large Grant property on thecorner of Grenville andHampton Streets. In later yearsthe property was subdividedand there are now shops on thetop half of the original propertywhilst Geoff built his house on the lower half where he hadlived ever since with wifeElaine.

The Committee of the OldHamptonians expressesits deep gratitude toGeoff for his untiringefforts, and offerssincere condolences tohis wife Elaine, theirchildren, and family .

All girls - Hampton Primary School Grade 6B - 1945NOSTALGIA Photograph supplied by formerHHS student Graeme Venn.

Graeme now resides in NSW, and writes...”Whilst not Hampton High School as such, from humble beginnings atHampton Primary School in the mid 40s, most of these students, including me, then went on ultimately to HHS,though many transferred over to Marriage Rd East Brighton High when it opened. In the 1945 grade 6B photo of the girls, most of them also went off to HHS the next year. My sister Dawn is the laston the right of row 3.

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do youdetermine whether or not an older person should be putin an old aged care home?”“Well,” he said, “we fill up a bathtub, then we offer ateaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to emptythe bathtub.”

Gotta love us seniors “Oh, I understand,” I said.“A normal person would use the bucket becauseit is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.”“No” he said. “A normal person would pull theplug.Do you want a bed near the window, or do youwant the bed next to mine?”.

Some memories from and ex student Submitted by Val Mann (Nee Sellenger)

My time at Hampton High School was from 1943 -1947. It is always interesting to see the old photos in“The Aurora”.When I was in fourth form, we used to arrange a hikeon Sunday, where we got the train to Ferntree Gully, then we hiked to Sassafras, Tecoma and SherbrookFalls, where we BBQd our food, and had a picnic there. We made a fire and enjoyed the day.Enclosed are some photos of students around the fire, and outside the general store. This was probably theonly thing up there then, in 1947.The outings seem old hat to young people now, butwe thought it was great fun to get on the train and travelfrom Sandringham, change at Richmond, and then onto Ferntree Gully. There is also a photo of the 1947 Hockey Team. Severalgirls from this Hockey Team went on to play withSandringham Hockey Team for may years. IsobelCaughie made the Australian team, and went to playin England for Australia.
