The Allegany County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an all-volunteer organization, would like to benefit from this program. As it's not worth a 20 cent stamp to send in a single coupon, it is hoped that members and friends will take it upon themselves to collect coupons in their neighborhoods and mail them to SPCA, Box 381, Wellsville 14895.
This is a particularly good project for school children who would like to do something to help abandoned animals. In return, they may request a visit from an SPCA member to discuss the nation-wide problem of surplus cats and dogs.

DEAR MISTER EDITOR: The fellers had heard that house
building was picking up around the country, but they didn' know how much til Clem Webster give a report Saturday night on Gerald Ford's new place. Clem announced at the session at the country store that the former President was fixing to move his $1 million digs at Palm Springs to a house on a Vail ski slope he just finished fer under half a million.
Clem said Ford plans to spend four months a year in Vail, with time out fer golfing regular, lecturing at $3,500 a talk plus expenses, setting on boards of eight corporations and helping the University of Michigan, where he went to school, raise $160 million.
What word of Mr. Ford's new playhouse done, Clem went on, was remind him how this country is spoiling her ex-Presidents. There ain't no limit to all we do fer em, he said, cause ever time Congress meets we git more of their bills to pay. He had saw last week where the Secret Service is starting a recruiting drive to git more people to pertect more families of Presidents and former Presidents. Pritty soon, taxpayers will have to put up dormertories at all the colleges to hold the agents that are guarding the children of all these retired public servants, not to mention quarters on ranches, in mountains, at beaches and wherever else they decide to hang out.
This piece Clem had saw listed the Secret Service cost of watching our three former Presidents and their families last year at $12 million, and that's just fer starters. The seven Presidential libraries added $14 million. The three last year got $779,000 fer office expenses and we picked up their $100,000 telephone bills. This don't even consider their $70,000 a year pensions.
Ed Doolittle, fer onct, was with Clem cause he said his concern know-ed no party line. We all worry about the military paying $18 apiece to low bidders fer screwdrivers anybody can buy at Sears fer 89 cent each, Ed said, but at least we can tell ourselves that one of em might tighten the screw that holds the O ring that keeps the oil in an engine on an airplane. But we can't
use fer want of a nail the kingdom was lost reasoning on what we invest in ex-Presidents, Ed went on, cause it's all dead expense.
Farthermore, Ed said, Congress might light the set up. He had saw where Sen. Chiles of Florida put in a bill that would end Secret Service pertection eight year after a President leaves office, and cut down gradual on office expenses. He was pegged a cheapskate and his feller honorables blowed his idee out of the water.
I didn't bring it up during the sess i o n , M i s t e r E d i t o r , but a bureaucratic rule says nothing ever goes, more comes. I should of reminde Ed of another vote in the House shortly before it took off fer the summer. I saw where Rep. Brown of Colorado took note that Congress was paying operators of 44 automatic elevaters. He moved to do away with only 14 of the jobs, and his motion was beat down by a 2-1 margin.

Drivers Arrested By Wayland Police
A high-speed chase originating in Wayland and concluding' in Spr-ingwater shortly after 1 a.m. Sept. 4 resulted in the arrest of an area man
P a t r o l m a n Char les Bardeen reported Duane A. Johnsen, 24, of Wheaton Hill Rd., was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to comply, speeding, unsafe passing and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
He was arraigned before Wayland Village Justice Ralph Smith where the case was adjourned for a court assigned attorney.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Sept 6. Wayland police charged Daniel R McDowell, 26, of Cohocton, with driving while intoxicated, speeding and failure to keep right.
Bardeen reported the arrests of Johnsen and McDowell bring to six the number of arrests since August for driving while intoxicated.
