Over the past glorious years we have seen many achievements in the field of sports and games in our

beloved country, Malaysia. Penang Free School gave birth to many excellent and famous athletes

and sports officials. They have carved a name for the school and on a bigger perspective have represented the country at international sports events, making us

proud being an Old Free ourselves.

Today, we honour and hail them as our heroes in recognition of their contributions and dedication in their respective sports fields, may it be as athlete or official. We have the privilege of honouring

our heroes tonight, going beyond tradition, whilst anticipating many more heroes of the next

generation. The glory goes on...

Penang Free School has generated many sportsmen and sports officials who have represented our country at regional and international level. Penang Free School is also well known for sports like hockey, badminton, rugby and tennis. These Old Frees are not only involved in the sports, but some are also actively involved in development of sports in the country and internationally.

In this 196th Anniversary Dinner 2012, OFA KL & Selangor it is privilege and proud to honor our PFS Sports Heroes in recognising their contribution to the school, state and nation.

The selection criteria for sportsmen and sport officials are determined by a selection committee which comprises of experience and well known Old Frees.

The selection criteria for Sportsman are as follows:

1. Representing the country in sports at various level • Asean • Asia • World Championships or The Olympics2. Achievements while representing the sport3. Number of years representing the sport 4. Involvement in development of the sport

OFA KL & Selangor is also recognizing the Sports Officials who are involved in Sports Associations and Sports Teams. The selection criteria for Sports Officials as below:

1. Involvement in Sports Association 2. Level at which the old frees are associated (Malaysia, Asia, International)3. Position held at the association 4. Duration of involvement5. Involvement in sports development 6. Achievement of the association or team

Datuk Eddy Choong became one of the best badminton players ever and the most famous player of his generation. He was a sensational player with tremendous jumping power, making startling jump-smashes, retrieving ‘lost’ shuttlecocks brilliantly. He was the personification of agility, sportsmanship, entertainment and ambassadorship.

Y.Bhg. Datuk eddy Choong

Datuk Eddy Choong had several nicknames such as ‘Mighty Mouse’, ‘Demolition Man’, and ‘Floating China-man’. In 1952, Datuk Eddy Choong reached his first final in the All England Men’s Singles championship, and one year later, he won his first of four All England Men’s Singles titles (1953, 1954, 1956 and 1957). He was also part of the Malaysian team that has won the 1955 Thomas Cup.

Datuk Eddy Choong would go on to win no less than 450 titles around the world, including 75 international events.

Former national hockey skipper, Datuk Ow Soon Kooi was unanimously elected as the President of the Penang State Hockey Association (PSHA) recently. He has represented the country from 1973 to 1984 and played in 1976 and 1984 Olympics.

He made his national debut at the 1973 Sea Games in Singapore which the team won second placing. He also played in the 1978 and 1982 World Cups, 1974 Asian Games and 1981 Inter-continental Cup.

Datuk Ow Soon Kooi was part of the team that qualified for Moscow Olympics. He also played in Montreal Olympics in 1976 and Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. He played in the Asian Games Teheran in 1974, World Cups Buenos Aires in 1978 and Mumbai in 1982.

Y.Bhg. Datuk Ow Soon Kooi

Mr Koe Chong Jin represented Penang in hockey and cricket between between 1965 and 1967. He joined Polis Diraja Malaysia in 1967 and continued to play hockey and cricket for Police from 1967 to 1981, and Negeri Sembilan from 1968 to 1970.

He was the captain of the Malaysian Cricket Association Colts Team between 1968 and 1969, He represented Malaysian Hockey Team to the Mexico Olympics in 1968 and played in the forward line position.

Dr. Oon Chong Teik played for international badminton in the late-50’s and 60’s. Dr. Oon Chong Teik were badminton playing siblings from Malaya (Malaysia), each of whom won a variety of international titles while studying toward a medical degree in England.

The eldest of the three, Dr Oon Chong Teik, was twice a singles semi finalist (1961, 1962) at the All-England Championships which was then the world’s most prestigious tournament for individual players.

Mr Takbir Ahmad represented Penang in hockey from 1967 to1972 and football (Burnley Cup under 20) in 1966. He was the Malaysia hockey team goal-keeper. He has also represented Malaysia in hockey in 1972 Munich Olympic. One of the best position he has achieved internationally was world no 8.

He joined the Royal Malaysian Police as Inspector in 1973 and represented police in hockey. He was the coach for the Police ladies team from 1984 to 2003. He rep-resented Kuala Lumpur and the Sultan Ahmad Shah Hockey team in veteran Asia Pacific Rim Tournament from 1998.

mr Takbir Ahmad Nazir mohd

Tengku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Rithauddeen Tengku Ismail was active in sports while at school, both at lower school and secondary school at Penang Free School (PFS). He presented the school in football, hockey and rugby. While at Nottingham University, he once played for the second team of Nottingham University against Manchester University second team. Tengku took up Badminton Club at Nottingham University. In the second year Tengku was elected as Badminton Captain at Nottingham University.

He was the President, Asean Football Federation, Deputy President, Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), President Royal Selangor Golf Club and President Kuala Lumpur Football Association.

Ym Tengku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad rithauddeen Tengku Ismail

Y Bhg Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Elyas Omar was the President, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He was also the member of National Sports Council from 1980 to 1984, Vice President of Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), President National Cycling Federation of Malaysia from 1984 to 1988 and National Sports Commissioner in 2005. At regional level, he was the President, Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) from 1991to1993.

During his tenure as President of the Kuala Lumpur FA from 1984 to 1996, Kuala Lumpur has won the Malaysia Cup in1987, 1988 and 1989. Under his guidance, badminton regained some lost glory when Malaysia won the Thomas Cup in 1992. From then on, the badminton scene in Malaysia also changed. He was also the Chef De Mission of Malaysian Contingent to 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri elyas Omar

Datuk Ir. A. Sani Karim became the Vice President, World Squash Federation from 2002 to 2006. He was also the alternate member of Majlis Sukan Negara from 2005 to 2007, member of National Coaching Board, member National Sports Advisory Panel (SAP), Kementerian Belia dan Sukan in 2008, 2010 to 2013, President Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) from 2004 to 2010, member of Stadium Merdeka Board (Perbadanan Stadium Merdeka) from 2005 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2010.

In squash, he is the President of Asian Squash Federation (ASF) and Regional Vice President, World Squash Federation (WSF) since 2009. He was also the Vice President, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) from 2005 to 2007 and 2009 to 2011. In December 2006, Datuk Ir. A. Sani was the Chef De Mission for15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

Currently he is the Deputy President of Olympic Council of Malaysia since 2009.

Y Bhg Datuk Mohamed Zain Yusof is the Vice President of Malaysia Golf Association (MGA), Secretary General of ASEAN Golf Federation, Chairman of National Players Development for more than 8 years and Chairman of National Junior Development for more than 5 years. He is also responsible for developing grass root training program in school.

He is a member of International Golf Federation (Admin) for 2 years. As the Captain of Malaysian Team for World Eisenhower Golf Championship, he has attained best performance to date as no 8 in world.

In badminton, he is the Council Member of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Deputy Chairman of Training Committee for more than 4 years and Chairman of Souvenir Program Committee. In 1992, he was involved with Malaysia team that has won the World Prestigious Thomas Cup. He was also the Badminton official when Malaysia participated in Barcelona Olympic. Malaysia won Bronze medal for both Individual and Team event.
