Shop at the Old Fire Station is now online.Flick to page 22 to find out more.www.shopattheoldfirestation.org.uk
Now online!
Would you believe we’re now half way through our third year? It’s amazing how time flies! We opened 2014 with a cracking programme of events that included Alan Davies, wonderful puppetry from Blind Summit, creators of The Table and the first ever Oxford Comedy Festival – to name but a few! This season it continues with some excellent (and award winning!) theatre including Bitch Boxer, The Islanders and On the Beach as well as Oxford based Troika Theatre with Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime. For music lovers we’ve got the intriguing and exciting first time showing of Alexander the Great – A Folk Operetta as well as jazz, more Cuban music from Ran Kan Kan and a new round of The Listening Room who have moved to a permanent Tuesday spot. As usual our Tuesday’s are firmly in Oxford’s calendar and we’ve arranged another great season, so make sure you pop them in your diaries.
If it’s all about visual arts and crafts, then then you’ll love the new Gallery and Shop programme. We’ve got some great interactive exhibitions and a host of workshops and events. And talking of workshops, our regular classes are still offering a wonderful array of dance classes that will either get you fit or perfecting that plié.
So, have a flick through our new season and start booking up that diary!

Okay, let’s start with an introduction…tell us something interesting about yourself and give us the quick lowdown on what you make and do.We are two London based architects with a passion for beautifully crafted design at all scales and we strive to create intricate, unique and affordable handcrafted jewellery. Our most recent collection is inspired by the traditional Japanese woodwork technique of Kumiko; creating delicate patterns from precisely cut wooden pieces. The patterns are laser cut from walnut and inset with mirror acrylic. We are currently working on our new leather collection and a series of tables.
What objects, people, places or spaces influence and inspire you?We are influenced by everything around us, including architecture, nature, fashion, art and patterns from different cultures.
What do you do when you’re not making? Or is it a full-time job?We are both practicing architects by day which has a significant influence on the patterns we create. In the little free time we have we really enjoy visiting beautiful spaces, galleries and markets.
We speak to Hazel and Malaika of Chalk to find out more about their beautiful pieces of jewellery…

Do you listen to anything when you’re working? Often Radio 4.
What’s the single best piece of advice you can give to someone starting out in jewellery design?Design jewellery you would like to wear yourself.
What’s the most difficult part of your job?We would love to spend more of our time designing however there is a lot of admin that comes with running your own business!
And the most enjoyable? It is a great reward to see someone wearing our pieces. Also we always have plenty of jewellery to wear!
Do you have a favourite handmade item that you own, or would love to own?A beautiful ceramic pot purchased at a market in Tokyo. We love the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi – a beauty in imperfection and impermanence.
A selection of Chalk items can be bought in the Shop.
