Novum Systems

Structural

KK: The structure consists of timeless galvanized and shop painted steel tubes which are connected by spherical nodes. The tubes connect to the steel nodes on-site with a simple bolt connection. The entire spaceframe structure is very lightweight but also rigid which makes it ideal for glazing.

Glazing

PSG: Novum point supported glazing was used to support the glass panels. The PSG allowed for flexibility to support the planar glass to the complex curved geometry of the spaceframe system. The glazing arms are of galvanized painted steel.

Design Solution

Novum was contracted to engineer, fabricate and install a canopy for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. The canopy utilizes Novum’s classical Spaceframe KK-System which was ideal for this project as it achieved the lightweight structure which the design team desired. The 55’ x 30’ structure is so lightweight that the entire spaceframe was assembled on the ground and picked up by a crane as one piece set on its columns. Most importantly, the KK Spaceframe achieves the unique spline shape the design team looked for at an affordable price. The welcoming shape helps to bring spectators closer to the campus events like marching band concerts that occur under the canopy.
