On Saturday, September 29, 2018, Calvary Chapel Visalia will host its 10th Annual Motorsports Show, Craft Boutique and Car Parts Swap meet. The event, which is free to the public, is a family-friendly event that offers a variety of activities for all ages.

The vision for the show began in 2007, when our former Senior’s Pastor, Milton Hare, wanted to begin a program of afterschool Bible clubs in elementary schools in Visalia. Seek-ing the help of his friend and local car club member, Bob Isaak, the first car show was planned for 2008. Thanks to great support from local car clubs including the Visalia Vapor Trailers and Small Town Cruizers, the first of many shows was in the history books.

The philosophy of the planning committee was and continues to be to bless the folks who take time to bring their fabulous cars to the show. The original cost of an entry was $25, which included a t-shirt, BBQ lunch, and merchant award. The fee was increased to $30 after a couple of years but the committee has worked to not increase that fee while still providing a great “SS” t-shirt, deep-pit BBQ lunch, and merchant award. Tough to find a show that offers more value for the entry fee paid.

This year’s show will offer seven trophy categories including Best-of-Show car, pick-up, motorcycle, big rig (no trailers please), lowrider, rat-rod, and specialty vehicle. There will also be an award for the most car club members in attendance. Last year, there were over 130 vehicles on display, ranging from beautiful customs to spotless originals and included several restored “Big Rigs.” The show has consistently had a nice variety of vehicles. And as always, you can park with your friends or club…no pre-set parking by category.

As in past years, the show will welcome Shirley Shahan Bridges and her ‘68 Dodge Dart, which is a tribute to her original ‘68 Dodge Hemi that she raced back in the day. Shirley has been part of the planning committee for the show from the beginning. Shirley, who raced under the name of Shirley Shahan, was a force to be reckoned with in the 1960’s. In 1965, she landed the Drag-On-Lady, a limited edition 1965 Plymouth Belvedere Hemi, setting the speed record for that model at 127 mph. Shirley became the first woman to win a National Hot Rod Association national event. Her 1967 Hemi Coronet became one of the most cop-ied vehicles in the sport. She was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and she received a lifetime achievement award from the NHRA.

Along with the cars, the vision of the show included something for the ladies as well…a craft show. We have an average of 30 vendors offering a wide variety of crafty items, clothes, and jewelry. Along with the kids’ area, where there are activities like crafts and face-painting, there is something for every member of the family. In addition to the car show and craft area, the show offers a car parts swap-meet. Might bring a new opportunity for folks who are visit-ing the show. The show averages about 20 vendors annually who have a wide variety of car parts.

And as always, there will be lots of food, including coffee and biscuits and gravy, a deep pit lunch, hot dogs, baked goods, shaved ice, kettle-corn, and a local favorite - the A&W Root Beer Truck serving ice cream floats. There will be music throughout the day, 50-50 drawing, and a great selection of raffle items to bid on, including a beautiful, fully refurbished antique Coke machine.

Ford Wants a Premium For all-neW

ranger PickuPBy Paul A. EisensteinThe Detroit Bureau

Base model to start at $4,000 over Chevrolet Colorado. After a lengthy absence, the Ford Ranger is about ready to return to the U.S. market and shoppers now can price and build their own version of the midsize pickup at a special micro-site the Detroit automaker has launched. Set to reach showrooms early next year, Ford will be offering a wide array of body styles, bed and powertrain op-tions, ranging from the base, 4×2 SuperCab XL with a six-foot box, up to the more lavishly equipped 4×4 SuperCrew Lariat with a five-foot cargo box. But the heavily updated version of the global Ranger launched earlier in the decade won’t come cheap. The 2019 pickup will carry a starting price of $24,300 plus $1,095 in delivery fees. That’s about $4,000 more than its cross-town competition, the base, extended cab version of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado starting at $20,500. And for truck buyers on

a tight budget, the aging Ni-ssan Frontier starts at just $18,900. Even General Motors’ more well-trimmed GMC Canyon will undercut the new Ranger, with a starting price of $21,400 before de-livery fees. The 2019 Ford Ranger will by no means be the most ex-pensive vehicle in its segment to get into. You’ll have to shell out $25,400 to get into a bare-bones Toyota Tacoma, and $29,990 for a Honda Ridgeline. Meanwhile, buyers will be walked up the price ladder pretty quickly by Ford. A 4×4 version of the SuperCab jumps anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 over the 4×2 pack-age, for example, and a Su-perCrew model is likely go-ing to be hard to find under $30,000. Meanwhile, that 4×4 SuperCrew Lariat with the five-foot cargo box will start at $39,480 – including delivery fees but before op-tions. Ford once was a major player in midsize trucks, but with the segment‘s sales seemingly on a fast decline to nowhere it invested little in updating the Ranger and, on December 22, 2011, the last one rolled off the line at the Twin Cities Assembly Plant in Minnesota.

After a wonderful catered lunch Rob load-ed us in his private bus and gave a tour of his high tech dairy. They milk 9000 cows twice a day, generate all their own electric-ity on site using methane from cow waste. Everything is computerized. They have their own trucking company to haul milk and feed. Although family owned and operated this is not your old mom and pop dairy. It is environmentally green and efficient. In the evening we had an open bar by John and Carolee Morrison and light food done by my wife Linda Groah and Rosemary Huckaby at the motel lounge. Wednesday we were off to Tom Meleo’s Mag-nificent Chevrolet collection, about 75 re-stored and pristine original Chevrolets from 1914 through 1954 set in a wonderful two building show room setting. The super deal-er displays are as impressive as the amazing cars. This one is in the middle of an orange orchard. All of the cars run and can be taken out in a matter of minutes. Many are driven regularly. On the way there we made a stop at the country farm home of Rob and Bev Nagle. They grow cattle feed here. This was supposed to be just a coffee stop but the Na-gles don’t do ordinary. They turned one of their several car display buildings into ban-quet hall for us. Yes there were magnificent MOPAR cars, Rob had educational displays on MOPAR cars and parts and more, but they also set up a spread fit for a king. Amaz-ing! We really did not need lunch after that. We did have a nice Mexican lunch on the

road. Again in the evening we got together in the hospitality room with an open bar and light food. Thursday we visited Brian and Sandy Blain’s home and shops with large collection of vintage race cars set in 10 acres of lawn and four display buildings. Here surrounded by another walnut orchard we were treated to the rebuilding shops and about 40 high end vintage race cars ranging from a 1911 Indy

car that ran in the first Indy 500 to cam am and formula cars. All are driven and most are raced in vintage racing. The shop was in operation, we witnessed the Indy car and several others being repaired and prepped for the upcoming race season. Refreshments were served here too. From Blains we drove to our home for lunch. The tour cars were parked in our back yard on the lawn next to the shop and lunch served in the middle yard. The shop, where over 300 authentic antique car bodies have been built, Linda’s country store display and the collector car barns were open for inspec-tion. Some showed interest in the newly ac-quired unrestored 1910 Maxwell barn find. Tim Williams, who found and procured the car, was able to share it for the first time after over 100 years in a leaky shed. It was liber-ated just this month. We ended early, about 3, at the request of some who were a few hours’ drive from home and wanted to be home this day.The only award given was a hard luck while completing the event went to Ralph Mc Neil and his trouble prone 1906 Reo. He drove every inch of the routes but worked on the car every day to do it. The car ran well but kept loosing and breaking small parts. We had a wonderful group of old cars and old car people. If you are in the west and have a pre 1916 one or two you need to at-tend one of the Western Gaslight One and Two tours. They are a hoot.

Old Cars Fun Facts

The first full-scale, self-propelled mechanical vehicle was released in 1769. It was a steam- powered tricycle that was used to haul cannons around town. (But, it weighed 8,000 pounds!)

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is believed to be the first modern automobile. German inventor Carl Benz applied for the patent in 1886, and later, his wife took it on the first-ever, long- distance drive.

In 1913, the Ford Model T became the first mass-produced automobile. Three years later, 55 percent of all cars in the world were Model Ts, which is a record yet to be broken.

The 1964 Pontiac GTO is widely regarded as the first “muscle car.” Pontiac owned the muscle scene in the early 1960s, but by 1968, that car had plenty of competition.

The Ford Mustang also made its debut in 1964. It was officially unveiled at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York. That same day, the car also debuted in showrooms across America, and close to 22,000 Mustangs were purchased.

The first Chevrolet Camaro to ever come off the production line was black. And originally, the Camaro was going to be called the Panther.

The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was banned by NASCAR. The car was named for the Daytona 500, and with its record-breaking speed, it won the first race it was entered in. Unfortunately, however, it was just too fast to last.

Can the Flintstones and Jetsons Sell America on EVs?By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

New ad campaign brings back two classic cartoon fami-lies. There’s an electrified revolution heading for your lo-cal showroom, with dozens of hybrids, plug-ins and pure battery-electric vehicles coming to market over the next few years. The challenge the industry faces is getting consumers to plug in. All forms of battery-based vehicles accounted for barely 3% of the total U.S. market last year. Building awareness is a key goal for Electrify America, the project backed by $2 billion from Volkswagen, part of the settlement of its diesel emissions scandal. The 10-year effort makes its public debut this week with an ad campaign pitching the virtues of battery-electric vehicles. And to help get the message across, it’s borrowing the theme music from two Boomer-era cartoon shows, the Flintstones and the Jet-sons. The first spot, dubbed JetStones, features a number of new battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, and will air on na-tional and local cable television, with a radio version run-ning in both English and Spanish. At the same time, Electrify America will begin placing a network of high-speed charging stations across the country. Established as part of a settlement with U.S. and Cali-fornia regulators, Electrify America’s mandate is to, “invest $2 billion over a 10-year period in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure and awareness. The investment will en-able millions of Americans to discover the benefits of electric driving and support the build-out of a nationwide network of workplace, community and highway chargers that are con-

venient and reliable.” The project is aimed at addressing what is often de-scribed as the chicken-and-egg problem facing proponents of plug-based vehicles: without a network of charging stations, it will be difficult to have battery-cars serve as a true replace-ment for gas-powered vehicles. During the first of four “cy-cles” over the course of the next 10 years, Electrify America plans to install over 2,000 DC fast chargers at 484 locations across the country. These include hundreds at WalMart facili-ties, as well as along two major routes connecting the East and West Coasts. Significantly, each of those chargers will be capable of delivering up to 350 kilowatts of power, enough to deliver up to 20 minutes of range per minute, addressing another challenge, the slow charging times of today’s battery-cars. The venture, which is based in Reston, Virginia, isn’t alone. Commercial ventures, such as ChargePoint, are also setting up charging stations across the U.S., as is Tesla, with its Supercharger network. That has already begun making it easier for EV and PHEV owners to start extending their range of travel. Getting the message across is the other mandate for Electrify America, according to Richard Steinberg, the pro-ject’s marketing and communications chief. The Flintstones theme music is meant to signify the primitive technology of today, with the Jetsons theme under-scoring the idea that the future of transportation is already here. None of the characters from the two ‘60s-era Hannah-Barbera cartoons actually appear on screen.

The Electrify America ad campaign plays up the fun-to-drive aspects of battery-cars as much as their environmental benefits.

The campaign may be funded by VW but it features EVs from a variety of manufacturers, including this Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Valley NatioNalS oCtober 13th – 14th Can I share something with you? I love car shows more than anyone, but had become truly bored to death of them! Promise. That is why, eight years ago, I convinced Russell Zulim of Double Z Hot Rods and my wife, Layla Granata, to set out on an adventure with me. I was determined and passionate about creating automotive events that were active, full of exciting entertainment, and appealing to all genera-tions. No more bed sores from sitting in lawn chairs all day!

With that said, it is with great pride that our team of volunteer staff and I at Hot Rod Coalition announce that the 5th Annual Valley Nationals is returning to the beauti-ful Madera Fairgrounds October 13th - 14th. It will be a hootenanny of a good time, full of entertaining aspects that will help you keep that prized lawn chair in peak condition. Last year’s event was nothing short of a dream come true for HRC: the event drew national attention from magazines, online forums, and the traditional hot rod community. We believe the Valley Nationals is one of the best “all-inclusive” events from Bakersfield to the Bay Area.

It is with great pleasure that I personally invite you to enjoy this event that we’ve thoughtfully planned out for the classic car community’s enjoyment. A few of the exciting ele-ments you can look forward to at this year’s event include:

•IndoorShow:ThankstoourorganizerSkipLewis, thisyear’s indoor showing class will be 100% handpicked, and full of Skip’s creativity and his eye for detail.

•Pinstripers’Lounge:Quicklybecomingadestinationfor the hot rod artist community. Grab a front row seat to watch the godfathers and best in the business show off their skills.

•LiveMusic:SpeedaSoundwillonceagainprovidefirst-class sound for the live music heard throughout the event. However, this year we are doubling down. We will have not one, but TWO stages with live music played throughout the day by at least six bands.

• SwapMeet:The swapmeet that took everybodybysurprise last year has expanded their footprint this year and is expecting more than 500 vendors. A limited number of 20 x 20 swap spaces are available for only $30.00! Reserve yours: Contact (209) 579-4797 or [email protected].

•FoodTrucks&Drinks:Severalof thearea’s favoritefood trucks will be attendance, and the boys at Firestone Walker Brewery will be keeping everyone hydrated and en-tertained with games and giveaways.

•HotRodVendors:Whetheryou’relookingforapaint-er, upholstery shop, or full service shop, the Valley Nationals will have numerous options for you to explore in a quality marketplace.

• Pin-Up Contest: The sophisticated ladies from theRockabilly Mafia will be back again this year to host the crowd-pleasing and first-class Pin-Up Contest, and transfer

the crown to a new winner.

•ReliabilityRun:Formany,therealfunbeginsonSun-day morning during the annual Reliability Run. For the 5th year in a row, we will meet at a location to-be-determined (not at the Fairgrounds) and set off to personal collections and shop tours. We then get to business on the back roads. The leisurely stroll down smooth pavements, twists and turns is sure to keep a permanent grin on your face for days to come.

•OtherHighlights:Top50Awards,HighSchoolAutoShop Shoot Out, Live Fabrication Demonstrations, Vintage Drag Race Display by Eagle Field Drags

We are very proud of the event we’ve created and can’t wait to share it with our local hot rodding community. We hope you will be able to join us! Those who pre-register will be allowed into the event thirty minutes early to find their de-sired parking spot. To pre-register, just fill out the registra-tion form online at WWW.HOTRODCOALITION.COM and submit your fee through PayPal. You may also register at either of the last two Rods on the Bluff events on September 1st and October 6th . 1955 chevrolet corvette By Bearnest, Old Cars Weekly,Photos By John Gunnell

Motorsports history was made in the middle of No-vember 1954 when the first appearance of a Corvette in an international race took place during the fifth Carrera Pan-americana, aka Mexican Road Race. The Corvette wore race No. 12 and was owned by Chicago speed shop owner and

hot rodder Bill von Esser, Sr. According to the March 1955 issue of Speed Age, the early Corvette was the 12th car to start the race and was a Heavy Sports Car class entrant. Cars in that class were the first to leave the starting line in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico, on Nov. 19. The Corvette was among 149 cars that were trying to win the 1,908-mile contest. Von Esser did not get far. He failed to complete the first leg of the race, a 329.4-mile run to Oaxaca. Speed Age said that the car was “stalled by mechanical trouble.” Over the years, it was thought that the Corvette’s inline six threw a rod, but Bill Peter of Mequon, Wis., says that’s not accurate. Peter constructed a replica of the car as a tribute to the original and during the project, he made contact

with von Esser’s son. Bill von Esser, Jr. told him the car had valve train problems. A few days after the race, the senior von Esser and co-pilot Ernest Pultz found a bus in Mexico with good valve train parts and repaired the ’Vette.“They fixed it, drove it back to Chicago and then it sat in front of von Esser’s shop for months,” said Peter. “Suddenly, it dis-appeared. No one seems to know what became of it. Bill von Esser, Jr. thinks maybe they gave it back to Chevrolet.”

The company wasn’t abandoning midsize pickups entirely, launching a new, inter-national version about the same time the U.S. model was sent to the scrapheap. The new model has increased Ford’s global presence and even became Europe’s best-selling pickup in 2015.

By then, several Ford com-petitors had begun to think that reports of the demise of the American midsize pickup market might be greatly ex-aggerated. General Motors waded back into the pool with its Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon models, winning much acclaim and strong sales. Honda followed with a reborn Ridgeline, the only crossover-based model in the segment. Toyota did a

major Tacoma makeover. And Nissan is readying an update of the Frontier, now the segment’s oldest offering.

The two holdouts are Fiat Chrysler and Ford. Mark Fields, Ford’s former CEO, was re-luctant to spend the money needed to homologate the global Ranger for the U.S. market and was long convinced that bringing it back would simply eat into sales of the bigger and more profitable F-150. But, before his May 2017 ouster, Fields signed off on Ranger’s revival.

“As transaction prices continued to grow for full-size pickups, we saw an opportunity,” said Todd Eckert, Ford’s Truck Group Marketing manager. “We think this is an opportunity to bring back some of our former Ranger customers and get new buyers.”

The carmaker showed off a prototype at the North American International Auto Show earlier this year, though it cautioned that sales wouldn’t begin until early in 2019.

The 2019 Ford Ranger isn’t just a downsized F-150. Nor is it just a tweaked ver-sion of the midsize pickup sold overseas, company offi-cials revealed during a back-ground briefing on the new truck. Virtually every body panel and a significant por-tion of what’s underneath the skin has been revised for the North American market. There’s also plenty of info-tainment and safety gear meant to appeal to U.S. buyers.

“We’ve touched every exterior panel,” said Max Wolff, who oversaw exterior design, even the rear glass that gets a new pass-through.

The new Ranger won’t offer quite the variety of the big F-150, but there will still be three trim levels and a choice of either a Super Cab or Crew Cab, as well as two bed lengths. There’ll even be eight available wheel options.

Production of the 2019 Ranger will be handled by Ford’s Wayne, Michigan assembly plant. That’s the same facility that will handle the Bronco SUV also set to make a comeback. Both will share the same underlying platform.

As for the remaining De-troit hold-out, look for a new midsize pickup from FCA’s Jeep division to arrive next year. And, during a June meeting in Milan called to unveil the company’s next five-year plan, former FCA CEO, the late Sergio Mar-chionne confirmed a new midsize Ram pickup also is in the works.

The Flintstones/Jetsons spot is the first in what will be a series of messaging efforts that, over just the next 30 months will be backed by what Steinberg called a “$45 mil-lion carve out.” The goal, he explained, is “to showcase various electric vehicles already on the market to show they are fun to drive and a lot more range than people might expect.”

Significantly, though the $2 billion fund backing Electrify America comes from the VW settlement, the German automaker does not play a lead role in the ad campaign. The first TV spot opens with a Chevrolet Bolt

EV pulling alongside a conventional gas-powered vehicle. The spot ends with an array of battery-cars from different manufacturers flying by.

“There is no pivotal (single) brand asso-ciated with the campaign,” stressed Steinberg. Visitors to the Electrify America website will find links directly to the sites operated by each of the various automakers whose prod-ucts appeared in the new TV spot.

Electrify America plans to steadily up-date its twin mandates – to set up a bat-

tery-charging network and build consumer awareness – reflecting the anticipated growth in EV availability, as well as improvements in bat-tery powertrain technology.

According to studies by re-search firm IHS Automotive, there will be 46 EV models on the road by the end of this year, with 70 available by 2020 and 258 coming by 2025.

The real car has been discussed by Corvette historians and there is a scale model of it, plus a decal set for model makers. The racing car was known for its red Dayton wire wheels and a modi-fied grille insert that can be seen in some of the few photos taken of it in the day. The engine also had minor internal modifications, some of which gave it a higher-than-stock compression ratio. “It’s also unique in that the body panel under where the con-vertible top is stored was taken out so that a bigger fuel tank could be installed,” said Peter. “If someone found the real car sitting in a barn, the Corvette experts would know what it is.” Peter and John Schentz built the tribute car to run the La Carrera Panamericana, a rec-reation of the original race that started in the early 1980s as the Little La Carrera. This road race, between Ensenada and San Felipe, Mexico, was started by motorcycle enthusiast Loyal Truesdale. It evolved into the La Carrera Panamericana with Truesdale serving as its United States coordinator before his death. In 2008, Peter and Schentz took a 1954 Oldsmobile to Mexico and entered the car in the Historic Class. The dark green Olds has been seen at several vintage race weekends at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The Corvette was created for the 2010 La Carrera. “It was basically a tip of the hat to Bill von Esser, Sr.,” Peter explained. “We wanted to run an old Corvette and it had to be a pre-’65 model. Since it was built as a new car, it had to be up to new car standards; we didn’t just rebuild an old car and take it down there. It needed an FIA cage, for instance, and they let us do some upgrades like disc brakes and a few other safety sorts of things. But other than that, it looks exactly like the original car that von Esser ran in 1954.” The six-cylinder engine in the car is beefed up with GMC army truck connecting rods. “They’re heavy duty and built better than stock rods,” advised Peter. “Hot rodders used them in 216- and 235-cid Chevy six-es. Jerry White — a six-cylinder expert — helped me out with the engine and he was a lot of help.” The car in the accompany-ing photos is actually a rebuilt version of the 2010 racer. “We were doing really good in that race until halfway through it,” Peter explained. “We were in first place when we crashed it really badly into a guardrail. That’s how my part-ner met the local Mexican sher-iff, who didn’t speak English. Instead of taking the car away on a flatbed, the sheriff came by and took him to a junkyard where he got him for about $2000 of stuff to fix the guard-rail.” Peter forgot the name of the man in Tennessee from whom he bought the replace-

ment chassis, but remembers that the fellow was having Chip Foose build him a new chassis. Peter bought the old chassis and a new reproduction body from Lone Star in Texas. “We saved the crossmember and the wheels from the first Corvette,” he said. “Bill von Esser, Jr. had a lot of old pictures and stuff related to the original car and he was a big help to us.” Peter said he is not a big Corvette guy, but he’s had some kicks with his tribute car. “We just decided to redo the Corvette and bring it out,” he said. “We took it to Sebring in to shake it out before we brought it to Road America.”
