Background Info Olaudah Equiano (also known as Gustavus Vassa) was born in 1745 in Essaka, Igbo village in the kingdom of Benin. When he was 11 him and his younger sister were kidnapped by kinsmen from their home while their parents were out, and they were forced into domestic slavery. After being traded a few times Equiano was transported across the atlantic ocean along with 244 africans to the british colony of virgina. When Equiano arrived to the british colony he was bought by a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Michael Pascal. His new owner renamed him Gustavus Vassa even though Equiano didn't like it he was forced to accept it. As a slave he expreanced a very crule life style. Equiano was so scared in his new environment that he thought that the eyes of the portrates on the walls were following him and the clocks on the wall would tell his master all the things that he d one. Equiano recieved training as a seasmenship and traveled with his master through the seven year war with france. His job on the ship was to haul gun powder the the gun deck when n eeded as well as being pascals servant. Equiano was Pascals favorite servants so much that he sent Equiano off to Britain to Pascals sisters house to learn how to read and a ttend school. In this time Equiano converted to christianity and was babtized. in Febuary 1959. After the was that the british one Equiano didn't get his share of money nor his freedome that his Pascal promised him. Instead Pascal sold him to Captain James Doran of the Charming Sally at Gravesend and then sold to Robert King, a Quaker merchant from Philadelphia. King set him up working shiping routs and in stores. and for 40 pounds equiano could by his freedom. king tought him how to read and write more fluently and guided him along the path of his religion, and allowed Equiano to engage in profitable trading. Equiano earned his freedom by his late twenties and left the british colonies as a freedman. Facts and personal views. .
