The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Mass IntentIons

June 7, 2015Cycle B

Last Sunday we celebrated the Most Holy Trinity, the central mystery of faith and Christian life. It is the mys-tery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith; the light that enlightens them. Only God can give us the knowledge revealing himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today we celebrate the sec-ond main mystery of our faith: the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Son of God who assumed human nature for our salvation. Jesus is true God and true man. As the mystery of the Holy Trinity, we cannot fully understand this great mystery with our intelligence. The mystery of Christ is a revelation. He lived as one of us until the ignominious death of the cross. He is risen and ascended into heaven. But he has left us a “sign” - the biggest – of his presence, that is his body and blood un-der the species of bread and wine. The consecrated bread and wine are the “Eucharistic” presence, so the true and real Jesus. The bread and wine consecrated during the celebration of the Eucharist (Mass) are really and truly the “body” and “blood” of Christ. The celebration of the Eucharist is the celebration of the Passover. The Pass-over is celebrated to be “eaten”. Jesus says: “I want to eat the Passover with my disciples.” At the Last Supper, Jesus transforms the bread and wine into his body and blood and he commands to his apostles to do “this” in his memory. The celebration of the Eucharist is the celebra-tion of the Passover of the Lord through the centuries. We too can eat the body of Christ and drink his blood. When we eat the body of Christ we enter into communion with his sacrifice on the cross: saying “amen” we accept Christ died on the cross, and we also accept to “die” (obey) with him on our cross on the altar of our history. When we drink the chalice, the blood of Christ makes us enter into the joy of the Kingdom through the forgiveness of our sins. It is the Resurrection. This blood, in fact, unlike that of the sacrificed animals, has the power to “cleanse your conscience from dead works to worship the living God.” Let us rejoice and be glad! With hymns of exultation let us praise our Savior, our King, our Shepherd. He is the living bread that gives life and the holy wine of the feast!–
