High Performance Reels


2-Speed Gearing: Okuma’s 2-speed technology incorporates two sets of stainless steel main and pinion gears, allowing anglers the option of a high-speed gear ratio or a powerful low speed gear ratio for maximum power and torque. To shift gears it is as easy as pushing a button or popping a lever with Okuma’s unique shifting design to obtain the appropriate gear ratio you desire.

XL Gearing: The XL gearing design found on both lever drag and star drag reels incorporates an oversized gear box that features an enlarged gearing system and enlarged drag system. The drag surface areas on this system are more than 50% larger than a standard gear box design. For the gear system, the major advantage is that the gear teeth are substantially larger, allowing more strength and cranking power. This is how we are able to offer a high speed gear ratio reel without sacrificing cranking power. Our XL gearing system essentially turns your reel into a winch.

Quick-Set: This system allows for instant handle engagement and eliminates all handle back play commonly found in many reels. This is accomplished by using a corrosion resistant stainless steel roller bearing that engages the reel in one direction for rock solid hook sets.

RES II: The RES II System stands for Rotor Equalizing System. This second generation RES System incorporates a computer balanced weight precisely placed in the rotor. This weight allows for precision balance and eliminates all spool wobble for perfect alignments and smooth cranking.

EFR II: The Even Flow Roller System utilizes a ball bearing under the line roller to maximize efficiency. This roller helps reduce line twists by freely rolling over the line roller without friction. Without this feature line will naturally twist when drag is pulled.

Hydro Block: The Hydro Block design features a rubber gasket mounted in the top of a spinning reel spool. This rubber seal blocks water and foreign materials from entering the drag system. The Hydro Block system ensures that your drag washers always perform at optimal levels.

Quick Lock Handle: Okuma’s unique Quick Lock Handle design is perfect for the traveling angler. This new forged aluminium handle design is spring loaded and can be quickly folded by sliding the neck collar on the handle. This allows for a more compact design for winter storage or transportation. With a simple pull on the handle arm, the handle quickly locks into place and is ready to fish.

X-Spool: When you see this spare spool icon in the Okuma catalogue or on any of our packaging, you will know that you are getting a second spool with your purchase. G-Tech Spool: The G-Tech Spool is a new design that allows for reduced weight and increased casting distance. This spool design incorporates a lightweight graphite body and a machined aluminium spool lip for maximum casting distance. Rulidium: This proprietary drag material offers a wide range in drag adjustment with precise high and low settings. These super smooth Rulidium washers reduce heat and friction for maximum performance. These washers can be found on certain Okuma star drag and bait casting reels.

Velocity Control: The Velocity Control System is an adjustable, 6-pin centrifugal braking system for precision spool control. Weights can be adjusted IN or OUT for additional spool control. Positioning the weights in toward the spool allows for more freespool, while adjusting the pins out away from the spool allows for more control. Anglers can alternate weights until they find that perfect balance for casting.

Spool Access Port: This unique new design can be found on Okuma’s low profile bait cast reels. The Spool Access Port allows for quick ac-cess to the spool by simply sliding the lock/unlock lever on the side plate opposite the handle. This system allows for quick spool changes, but more importantly it allows quick access for adjusting the Velocity Control System.

Hi-Rise Spool: The Hi-Rise Spool is designed for maximum casting performance. This machined aluminium spool design features a large arbor and has holes drilled into the spool. By increasing this spool arbor and porting the arbor of the spool we can achieve maximum spool velocity. We also refer to this design as an inertia free spool system.

Bait feeding System: Okuma’s patented bait feeding system allows anglers to disengage their spinning reel spool and allow their bait to run freely. The bait feeding system incorporates a secondary micro-adjustable drag system at the rear of the reel that allows for precise adjustment of the spool for bait control. EOS: Elliptical Oscillation System: The revolutionary EOS design is patented in a number of countries around the world and is the soul of the Okuma mid to upper end spinning reel range. The EOS design uses elliptical shaped oscillation gears which provide exceptional line lay,

improved smoothness and maximum long-life durability. The EOS gears are always engaged and provide a very smooth spool stroke, eliminating the spool from jumping as commonly found on many reels.

DFD: Dual Force Drag System: DFD incorporates both surfaces of the spool to maximize high-end drag pressure, efficiency and over all smoothness.

Mounted in the top of the spool and protected by the Hydro Block system is a multi-disk felt drag system that works in conjunction with a secondary drag system that is mounted under the spool. Even pressure is applied to both surfaces of the

spool for maximum stability.

SLG: Speed Loc Pinion Gear System: The SLG technology incorporates a dual step pinion gear system on star drag reels that

allows positive engaging at extreme high speeds. The SLG system allows for instant gear engagement when engaging from freespool to strike at speeds in excess of 50 MPH.

CARBONITE: Okuma’s ALL NEW “Carbonite” drag system features a newly developed carbon based drag material which displaces heat and friction consistently and steadily even under the harshest of fishing conditions. Used in conjunction with a small amount

of specially formulated Okuma drag grease, the Carbonite drag system allows for a much wider and smoother drag-range, all while maintaining exceptional performance and pure fish stopping power.

E2BB: Extreme Elements Bearing: These high-grade stainless steel ball bearings have been designed with one of the most commonly used grades of stainless

steel in the marine industry. This stainless steel is used to fight off the harshest corrosion environments possible. E2BB’s feature ceramic balls which run smoother because they create less friction and are completely corrosion resistant, resulting in a smoother running bearing for long life durability. These bearings were designed to be more than 10 times more resistant to

saltwater than standard stainless steel bearings.

HPB: High Performance Ball Bearings: The properties of the HPB are almost identical to that of the E2BB with the exception of the balls. The balls used on the

HPB’s are constructed from the same high-grade stainless steel material as the bearing housing. These bearings were designed to be more than 10 times more resistant to saltwater than standard stainless steel bearings. These bearings may

even outlast the angler himself.

ALC: AlumiLite Frame Construction:AlumiLite construction incorporates Okuma’s rigid aluminium body technology on spinning, trolling and fly reel designs. Alu-

minium frames are stronger and more rigid and are capable of withstanding more pressure and torque than traditional graphite frames. These lightweight die cast aluminium frames provide more precise tolerances for precision gear alignment, maximum

cast ability and ultimate durability.

Machined Rigid Frame: Okuma’s Machined Rigid Frame construction incorporates a one-piece fully machined aluminium frame. These rigid bar-stock aluminium frames are the ultimate in precision alignment and tolerances withstanding more pressure and torque than any other material used in our industry for frame materials. Okuma features these anodized frames on fly reels, bait cast reels, lever drag

reels and star drag trolling reels.

Self Lubricating Gear System: The self lubricating gear system is a feature found on Okuma’s higher-end star drag reels. The main gear on this system in-

corporates a heat sensitive oil impregnated brass bushing that is mounted in the centre of the gear. This system releases oil if friction increases to keep the main gear and drive shaft running smoothly in all conditions. Okuma is the first company to adopt

this technology which originated in the large machine industry where this function has been time tested for many years.

BODY ARMOR: Okuma’s stainless steel Body Armor eliminates the frame flex commonly found in graphite framed trolling reels. This feature

incorporates two large stainless steel rings that are mounted to both sides of the frame. The harness lugs are integrated into the body armor design and eliminate the pressure commonly placed on the harness lugs by redistributing the pressure to

these large diameter rings.

Strong Arm Levelwind: This heavy-duty, stainless steel levelwind is Titanium coated and built to withstand the punishment of braided and wire lines.

The guide has been designed with an increased opening to insure proper knot clearance when fishing with double lines.

ACG: The Aluminium Comfort Grip is an oversized machined aluminium power handle knob that has been offset for maximum crank-ing power. This handle features a custom fit rubberized insert for extreme comfort. This handle is available only on certain Titus

Gold models.

Ergo Grip:Ergo Grip handle knob is an extremely comfortable oversized handle knob design for both speed and power. This soft touch

knob has been ergonomically designed to fit in the palm of your hand and will be found on certain Okuma lever drag reels, star drag reels and some spinning reel models.

Patented Drag SystemThe concept of this drag system is to maximize the workable surface area of the carbon fibre friction washers; there-fore the system has been engineered to make contact with the outer edges of our carbon washers which maximize efficiency and the ability for high drag settings. This is one major flaw with many lever drags in the industry. For example, Avet reels use a large carbon washer but the drag plates make contact with the inner diameter of the washer which reduces overall efficiency.

The heart and soul of the Makaira drag system is a specialized custom-made thrust bearing that works in conjunction with the drag system to absorb side load pressure on the ball bearings for maximum performance. The only other machined lever drag in the industry utilizing a thrust bearing is the Accurate Platinum Twin Drag reels.

This thrust bearing is crucial in the drag system design as it allows anglers to fish heavy drag settings with no visible signs of handle binding. The number one complaint currently heard in the market on Avet reels is that with standard to heavy drag settings the handle gets very hard to turn. The Makaira DFD has eliminated this problem from the equation.

The proprietary DFD design clearly defines the Makaira as a market leader in the development of lever drag technology. This unique lever drag system has been granted a United States patent by the Patent and Trademark office clearly establishing this design as “being a new technology for the fishing tackle industry.”

Helical Cut Gearing & Shafts The Makaira lever drag reels utilize helical cut main and pinion gears. This process allows for improved gear meshing which equates to improved gear smoothness. The angled teeth found in helical cut gears engage more gradually than straight cut or spur gear teeth. This allows helical gears to run smoother and quieter compared to spur gears. Spur gears cause impact stress and noise, because of the hard meshing and can not take as much torque as helical gears because their teeth are receiving impact blows as they mesh together. Okuma 2-speed reels are the only 2-speed lever drag reels in the industry to use helical cut gear technology.

Gearing & ShaftsThe Makaira series has been developed with the best possible materials avail-able in the industry. All main gears, pinion gears, drive shafts and spool shafts are machine cut from 17-4 stainless steel. This hybrid material offers the combination of excellent corrosion and heat resistance that is comparable to 304-grade stainless. Engineers frequently choose 17-4 stainless steel due to its high strength as well as its superior corrosion resistance when compared to many other high strength stainless steels. This corrosion resistant material can maintain mechanical properties in temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Cal Sheets, world famous for his blue printing of top lever drags, has recently upgraded all of his aftermarket gears and shafts to 17-4 stainless steel.

Gear Shifting Housing As our flag ship product, Okuma designed a heavy duty 6061-T6 grade aluminium housing for the 2-speed shifting mechanism. This housing offers superior protection when compared to similar reels with graphite housing and is protected from corrosion with a Type-I I anodizing process. The porting around the outside of the housing is not for cosmetic purposes. This porting is designed as a drainage system. The new shifter function features an oversized shift button, which requires the need for drainage if water gets under this button. The oversized button was designed so that it would be user friendly for all anglers regardless of finger sizing. Many reels on the market have very small shift buttons that need to be engaged from high speed to low speed, but anglers with large fingers can have difficulty engaging these smaller push button systems.

Handle SystemAll Makaira 2-speed reels feature the patented T-Bar handle knob. The T-Bar articulated reel handles are the first ergonomically correct reel handles ever developed. The ergonomically correct angle of the T-Bar handle is offset by 18 degrees and ensures maximum power with minimum fatigue. Unlike other reel handles, the T-Bar takes full advantage of the natural dynamics of the human hand, wrist and forearm to help sustain power and endurance for the angler. The T-bar handle is linked to the reel by a heavy duty forged 6061-T6 aluminium handle arm that has been ported to increase strength. A heavy duty stainless steel screw securely attaches the T-bar handle knob to the Type-I I anodized handle arm.


Racheting Drag LevelThe new Makaira series features a stainless steel drag lever plate that stabilizes and supports the movement of the 6061-T6 aluminium drag lever arm. The drag lever plate is ported along the full arc of the plate and works in conjunction with a stainless steel ball and spring in the drag lever arm for a strong detents that allows for a ratcheting drag lever. This ratcheting drag lever is extremely important for precise drag setting and for preventing drag lever creep that can be caused by the vibration of diesel power boats. In addition, the ratcheting lever helps prevent accidental drag disengagement.

Racheting CamAll Makaira series reels are equipped with a 303-grade stainless steel drag cam. This drag cam material is excellent for corrosion resistance. In addition, it has the strength to withstand the high pressures that can be applied by the drag system. Okuma equipped this drag cam with detents which allow for a ratcheting system when adjusting the pre-set knob while set-ting the drag system. In addition, the pre-set drag knob has been laser etched with refer-ence numbers so anglers can better determine their drag settings.

Frame DesignAll Makaira frames are machine cut from extruded 6061-T6 grade aluminium and protected by a Type-I I anodizing process. On all Makaira models, the rear cross bar has been ma-chined so that there is a thumb rest that dramatically aides in reducing fatigue when holding a large reel for extended periods of time.


Side platesThe side plates are constructed from 6061-T6 grade aluminium and are produced by a cold forging process for maximum strength. After the forging process, the side plates are machine cut to exact tolerances then machine engraved and polished for a smooth professional finish. In order to protect these reels from corrosion and reduce fading caused by UV exposure, the side plates are equipped with a Type-I I anodizing process. For tournament anglers and IGFA record seekers, we machine etched reference numbers into the arc of the right side plate that coincide with the range of the drag lever. These numbers have been placed in precise incremental locations to improve drag reference points for professional anglers.

BearingsThe Makaira and Cedros reels features 4 precision EZO ball bearings by Sapporo Precision Inc in Japan. The Makaira 80W features 6 ball bearings. For all spool shaft bearings, Okuma uses ABEC-5 grade bearings for precision performance under all conditions and are the key to the reels longevity. These ABEC-5 bearings allow friction free spinning for improved casting distance and reduced tension while live baiting. In addition, the Makaira features a custom designed stainless steel thrust bearing that is located in the right side of the spool. This thrust bearing absorbs side load pressure and allows the handle to crank freely under heavy loads. The thrust bearing is a key component in the Makaira and Cedros reel designs. The only reel in the industry other than Okuma to utilize a thrust bearing is Accurate in their Platinum Twin Drag reels.

Harness LugsAll Makaira and Cedros reels are equipped with stainless steel harness lugs that attach to the inside of the frame. On reels with open top frame designs the harness lugs have a system that we call a “lug and plug system”. This system allows anglers to have harness lugs incase they need to lock into a harness, and offers the flexibility to change the harness lugs to flush mounted stainless steel plugs. The stainless steel plugs offer a smooth frame design for anglers that are jigging or live bait fishing and do not require the use of a harness.

Okuma V-System 80 Drag Test

The Dual Force Drag system found in the V-System spin reels ensures a smooth and almost endless drag facility. By placing drag washers on the top and bottom surfaces of the spool more surface area is covered allowing the drag to perform smoothly at all settings. Our own tests show that the V-System’s drag is smoother than any other reel we tested including three of the other major brands, top reels.

We tested the smoothness of drag at a setting of 9kg. The smoother the drag the more chance the angler has of landing the fish. If the drag peaks too high there is more chance the leader will break, the hook will pull or a knot will give. If the troughs are too low the chance of the fish turning or the line slackening is further enhanced again reducing your chance of landing the fish. We tested the V-system 80 against three other leading brands “top of the line” reels. Some of these reels retail for more than double the cost of a V-system 80. The largest variation the V-System gave was 850gms while the other brand reels delivered variation of over 2kg and up to 3.5kg. The results are mind blowing with only one of the competing reels costing the fisherman less that the V-System 80.


The Okuma Salina II reel is a upgraded addition to the

spin range for 2010. The massive DFD system can output

huge amounts of drag whilst control it in the smoothest of

fashions. 9kg drag tests revealed 850g of variation making

Carbon drag washers will provide higher levels of drag pressure when fishing and they can handle heat better so drag pressure won’t dissipate as much with carbon. There is one fatal flaw with carbon drags and that is smoothness. When you are fishing for large snapper or even kingfish you might set your drag at 6-8kg our tests show that from 1kg to about 28kg felt drags are literally three times smoother than carbon. What does this mean? The smoother the drag the more consistent pressure you can keep on the fish this will lead to a quicker landing and will significantly reduce the risk of pulling a hook, breaking a leader or allowing the fish to turn. The problem with felt drag systems is that you can’t get the same pressure out of the reel that you can from carbon… or can you? Okuma have developed a patented technology called Dual Force Drag.
