Rob Murat is an actor, musician, and voice over artist originally from New York City. The Ivy League graduate received his acting and music training both in New York and in Los Angeles. As an actor, Rob recently made a guest starring appearance on the hit FOX TV series, Bones, and he co-starred opposite Academy Award winner, Halle Berry, in recurring episodes of the limited CBS TV series, Extant, executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Rob is also known for his accredited work in the world of music as a singer/songwriter/producer. His music videos have aired on MTV, Vh1, and BET broadcasts and have reached over 30 million homes via Music Choice OnDemand. His musical production can be heard on ESPN, TV One, CNN, and PBS’s, Sesame Street, among others. Rob’s soulful vocals coupled with his passionate abilities on the piano and the trumpet qualify him as a truly versatile entertainer. From headlined tours sponsored by Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network featuring famed TV Personality/Host, Paul Brunson, to breakthrough performances on the stages of Vh1 Save the Music, BET Music Matters, and Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, his live show (often featuring a full horn section) is simply amazing. Rob is also the narrating voice of a series of ESPN TV campaigns and ESSENCE Awards specials broadcast on The OWN Network. Perhaps, most relevant for this occasion, Rob is a proud member of the Oksana School of Music family and is always blown away by the skill, performance, and professionalism of all students involved.

Music is for EveryoneBy

As someone who has been teaching music for over 20 years, I have been fortunate enough to have taught students from every age group imaginable. And the one constant that I continue to see is the misconception by many adults that there’s a certain “window” that their child needs to start learning music by. The age varies, depending on the parent, but the age limit seems to be around the age of 12. This imaginary window has even prevented many adults and adolescents from wanting to take lessons, with many basing this off of the false idea that it’d be too late to start learning from scratch or that there would be no point in doing so. I’m here to tell you that this cannot be further from the truth.

While I did start learning classical piano at the age of 5, I’ve always strived to continue to learn and improve upon my skills, and I can honestly say that, as an adult, I’ve learned just as much as I did when I was a little girl. That’s the wonder of music. There’s always room for improvement, and the possibilities are literally endless.

Music is something that you can start learning at any age, as long as you have an open-mind and are willing to embrace it. You’ll find that, no matter the instrument, learning to play it and continuing to hone your skills can be just as awarding for you personally as a teenager or adult as it would be for a child. And don’t worry about learning to appreciate it. Once you choose to learn an instrument that suits you, that’ll come naturally.

All of this is possible because music is an art form that can positively affect your life in ways that you would never even think of. I’ve witnessed firsthand how some of my older students have grown to love learning how to play an instrument, even though they were reluctant to even start. Many have even told me that it has carried over into their personal relationships and overall happiness. You don’t have to have a background in it or to even have a particular passion for it at first. Life is about taking chances and not limiting your mindset.

Music is about creativity. It’s about demonstrating commitment. And most importantly, it’s about being rewarded for your efforts. It’s also about improving yourself as a person, mentally and physically. I can cite numerous studies that have shown that learning music helps with your overall productivity, memory retention, and anxiety, not to mention even improving sleep disorders in many cases.

For me personally, music may be my profession, but I play instruments for the pure joy that it has given me in life, allowing me to open up my mind in many ways and truly gain a sense of peace. There’s a certain simplistic beauty in it, even when playing a complicated instrument, which I have yet to discover anywhere else.

It’s a skill and a passion that will keep on rewarding you no matter where you are in life.
