Blueridge: ” Integrative Approach to Counseling Practice”: The mainobjective of this program is to explore ways that contemporary counselingtheories can form a basis for a counselor’s personal integrative approach tocounseling practice. Counselors working with diverse client populations in avariety of settings need to be familiar with a range of theoretical approaches inorder to best serve the needs of their client group. This presentation is based onthe assumption that counseling practitioners need to have a firm grasp of theoryas a basis for effective practice. This program provides an overview of keyconcepts and techniques based on eleven theoretical approaches to counseling. The presenter will explain his personal perspectives on developing an integrativeapproach. Both the advantages and disadvantages of an integrative approach tocounseling are described. The emphasis is on formulating a counseling style thataddresses the thinking, feeling, and behaving aspects of human functioning. This integrative perspective draws from the following theoretical orientations:psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, feminist, postmodern, and family therapy. Theintegrative model demonstrates ways to employ a variety of techniques at thevarious stages of counseling – from the beginning of the counseling relationshipto the evaluation and termination of the counseling process.
