Mission, Purpose, and Vision

Mission Within a liberal arts context, the mission of the College of Nursing at Oklahoma Baptist

University (CoN) is to educate students to become professional, caring, and competent nurses

who are prepared to integrate personal faith with the discipline of nursing while engaging in

Christian service within a diverse world.

Purpose The College of Nursing exists to offer an education program for the preparation of a

professional nurse within the framework of a liberal arts Christian college.

Vision The intent of the nursing program at Oklahoma Baptist University is to be a pace setter for

excellence in professional nursing education.

Page 8: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

8

Philosophy, Organizing Framework, Student Outcomes

Philosophy The College of Nursing offers programs which combine both a professional and liberal arts education

within a Christian university. The philosophy of the College of Nursing clarifies the structure

underpinning our programs. Our goal is to produce caring, competent professionals who are prepared

to integrate personal faith with the discipline of nursing and who can engage in service within a diverse

world.

Organizing Framework The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based

understanding of humanity, the physical and social sciences, and the management of information.

We believe professional nursing is developed through the process of reasoning, relating, and

professional formation which are applied to varied recipients of care. These four elements are

addressed in levels of increasing complexity as the student progresses through the nursing program.

Reasoning – An academically excellent general education provides a solid foundation for

professional reasoning. Reasoning can be defined as logical, ordered thinking used to

form conclusions. The nursing curriculum structures leveled learning experiences

regarding ordered thinking through the skills of gathering, interpreting, and synthesizing

evidence.

Relating – We believe nursing in integrally involved in transformative work with the

recipients of our care. Relating is a key element of that work. Building on a faith-based

liberal arts foundation, the nursing curriculum provides leveled learning opportunities

regarding relating through the development of communication skills, teamwork, and

interpersonal collaboration.

Professional Formation – Professional formation is at the heart of educating nurses

(Benner, et al, 2010). The nursing curriculum provides leveled learning experiences

regarding the formation of the professional role through opportunities to be provider,

coordinator, and designer/leader of care.

Recipient of Care – Professional nursing practice takes place in many settings. The

curriculum provides leveled learning opportunities with varied recipients of care

beginning with individuals, moving to families, then to communities and systems.

Reasoning, relating and professional formation skills prepare students to address integration of faith in

professional practice, quality and safety in delivered care and the promotion of health for diverse

populations in each level as they progress through the program. These values are central to both OBU

and to nursing’s professional standards which are found in the American Association of Colleges of

Nursing’s Essentials of Baccalaureate Education (AACN, 2008), the Institute of Medicine’s Future of

Nursing report (IOM, 2011), Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (http://qsen.org/, 2016) and

AACN’s Public Health: Recommended competencies (AACN, 2014).

Page 9: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

9

In addition to a curriculum which is clearly structured, we believe that optimal learning takes place in an

interactive, reflective environment with the guidance of expert faculty (Benner et al, 2010). Starting

with professionals who are committed to Christian higher education, nursing education at OBU

facilitates a transformative process to which learner, teacher and recipient of care all contribute and

benefit.

Faculty Governance

Adjunct Faculty Adjunct faculty, in addition to meeting OBU Human Resources requirements, must meet the CoN Clinical

Requirements. Orientation to the CoN and course material will be completed by the course coordinator

or clinical coordinator, depending on the assignment. Adjunct faculty are responsible for the course they

are facilitating; this includes, but is not limited to: syllabus preparation, ordering textbooks, setting-up

course online, grade submission, and student/faculty/course evaluations.

Equitability in Numbers This does not guarantee equity in number of committee members, but the numbers of members will be

sufficient to accomplish committee tasks. Special committee needs are considered and could relate to

matters such as the need for adequate committee representation and member continuity.

Faculty Members Faculty members are appointed to a committee for a year at a time and serve until the new list of

committee membership is distributed for that academic year. Committee Chairs and co-Chairs of each

standing committee are appointed for a two-year term by the Dean (i.e. August 2013 – August 2015).

Faculty The faculty and students in the CoN are full and active members of the college and OBU community.

Through councils, committees, and other vehicles, faculty and students are partners in setting the

course of the program.

Faculty meet monthly during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year and serve as the

decision-making body in the CoN with respect to student policies and curricula. Student representatives

from the Student Nurses Association and a representative of the support staff are invited to attend,

report, and represent their constituencies. Adjunct faculty can attend and/or access the minutes of

faculty meetings, but have no voting privileges.

Graduate Faculty Graduate faculty meet monthly during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year to discuss

matters specific to the graduate program, including curriculum, faculty, and students. The graduate

faculty may implement recommendations if they require no further review. Recommendations pertinent

to student affairs, academic affairs, or faculty affairs are referred to the respective committees for

action.

Nursing Leadership Council (NLC) The Nursing Leadership Council (NLC) meets at least once a semester or as designated by the Dean and

serves as the highest decision-making body within the CoN for all administrative matters that

encompass college policy, curriculum, and personnel.

training will result in a student not being able to attend clinical. A copy of documentation of clinical

requirements should be uploaded to CastleBranch Document Manager by the student and faculty. All

questions regarding clinical requirements should be referred to the Team Leader. The documents are

maintained in the CastleBranch Document Manager.

Additional requirements may be established by specific agencies. Students and faculty are required to

meet the health policies of the clinical facility. The College of Nursing Clinical Contract states that the

agency reserves the right to restrict students from practice in that facility when the safety of clients is in

jeopardy.

Course Credit for Clinical/Lab Experiences The College of Nursing policy for clinical and lab course credit is 1 credit hour for every 1.5 contact hours

in the clinical setting. For example, a student taking a 3 hour clinical course will be in the clinical/lab

setting or related activities 4.5 hours per week for 15 weeks during the semester.

License Verification Faculty must maintain a current, unencumbered registered nurse license in order to continue

employment. Licensure verification can be confirmed at https://www.ok.gov/nursing/verify/index.php.

A current copy will be on file in the CoN and submitted to the OK Board of Nursing.

Selection of Clinical Sites Purpose: To identify a clinical site that encompasses the experience and qualification of staff, the

availability of suitable patients, and the willingness to engage students in a productive learning

experience. The following criteria will be considered when selecting a clinical site:

Experience and qualifications of the staff

Teaching environment suitable for students

Availability of suitable patient population

Availability of specialized diagnostic or therapeutic equipment

Track record with previous clinical rotations

Credentials of organizational leadership

Geographic location (including international)

Anticipated rate of patient length of stay

Contractual negotiations

Regulatory history (JACHO, Magnet, CMS, etc)

A clinical placement agreement will be on file in the college of nursing office for each clinical site.

Skills LabSkills Lab is used to assist students in learning the skills required for nursing practice.

Additionally, clinical courses may have time scheduled for skills and case scenarios. The time in the skills

lab is a rehearsal to prepare for the nursing care of clients in the clinical setting. Students are expected

to treat this time in the skills lab with the same degree of seriousness as the actual client care setting.

In addition to the scheduled times, the skills lab is available for practice and review. Please see lab

schedule for available practice times.

Weekly Clinical Performance Policy All course syllabi must include the evaluation tools appropriate for the level of the course. Full clinical

tool can be assessed on the Nursing O Drive.

Course Guidelines

Clinical Absence and Make-Up The College of Nursing follows the absence policy of the University located in the Green Book at

https://www.okbu.edu/student-life/documents/student-handbook.pdf. However, there could be

additional course-specific attendance requirements and consequences if not met.

If a student is unable to attend clinical and/or laboratory, the student is required to notify the

appropriate nursing faculty and/or the nursing unit to which the student is assigned. Except in the case

of a life-threatening emergency, this notification must occur prior to the beginning of the clinical time.

The contact should be reported by the student and not by another person, such as a classmate, spouse,

or parent. Since there is little opportunity to reschedule clinical experiences, for every 2 hours of clinical

or laboratory missed by the student, 1% will be deducted from the student’s final course grade.

In the event of illness (with attestation as mentioned in the Green Book), death of immediate family

member, or participation in University-sponsored activities, the student may be given the opportunity to

redeem lost points with an alternative clinical/laboratory experience. The student may choose to forfeit

the points, unless the faculty in the clinical and/or laboratory course needs additional time to

adequately assess whether the student has satisfactorily achieved the course outcomes. In that case,

the student would be required to participate in the alternative clinical/laboratory learning experience.

The time required and assignments to complete would be commensurate with the learning activities

which were missed.

Academic Integrity Dishonesty and Grievance Procedure – see Green Book, Section 2.2 titled “College Citizenship” at

https://www.okbu.edu/student-life/documents/student-handbook.pdf.

Alternative Assignment Policy In the event that the learning management system is down, students may submit assignments via

faculty email to meet the assigned deadline. In the event that the student’s email system is also down, a

24-hour extension will be given to the student by the faculty to complete the submission.

Course Evaluation Each course is formally evaluated at its completion each semester in the CoN by locally-developed

surveys. OBU course evaluation requires junior-status faculty to have two courses evaluated and senior-

status faculty to have one course evaluated. IDEA is one form of course evaluation used by the CoN.

Grading See OBU Faculty Handbook, section 3.6 titled “The Grading System and Academic Standards”

Page 28: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

28

Late Assignments Assignments must be posted by the due date and time identified by each course. For compressed

courses, assignments that are more than 2 days late (including weekends) earn no points, with a 10%

deduction for one day and 20% for the second day.

Online Course Submission Time Central Standard Time in the United States is the accepted time zone for all courses submissions.

Assignments must be posted by the due date and time identified by each course.

Syllabus Guidelines In addition to the current syllabi template located on the O Drive, the following additions must be

included in course syllabi:

1. Each course outcome has corresponding program outcome(s) notated at the end of the

outcome. Example: Demonstrate an understanding of influences that impact curriculum

development, including diverse learner populations and ethical challenges. (PO 2, 5, 6)

2. Course assignments, in the assignment narrative/description/instructions, should address/list

out which course outcomes the assignment is addressing.

3. Assignment due dates should be listed on the course calendar.

4. Rubrics should be available for each assignment to: visibly measure the course outcomes for the

specific assignment, set a baseline for communication of assignment expectations, and present

standard assignment evaluation criteria.

In GCPS, all course syllabi are recommended to be posted four (4) weeks prior to the first day of class,

but must be posted at least 2 weeks prior to the first day of class.

Textbook Selection Faculty are required to choose and report their choices of textbooks and course materials to the

bookstore no later than:

October 15th – for Spring classes

March 15th – for Summer classes

April 15th – for Fall classes

A late adoption of a text may only occur with the approval of the CoN dean.

TurnItIn Benchmark Policy Plagiarism is not tolerated within the OBU College of Nursing. The faculty uses a tool to detect

plagiarism with the platform of www.Turnitin.com. This tool provides a measure of originality in terms

of a percentage of how much a written assignment matches other publications such as websites, books,

articles, and other student papers. Each faculty has the right to set an acceptable benchmark of

originality expected as appropriate for a written assignment within a course. This will be clearly

communicated to the students within the description and expectations of the assigned project.

Page 29: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

29

Emergencies, Complaints, Counseling

Complaint Policy The Student Complaint and Grievance Policy does not supersede specific policies involving special cases

such as academic integrity and grade appeals, Title IX, sexual harassment, and due process within

discipline procedures/hearings. Those special cases have specific policies and procedures that are

outlined separately. A student who is unsure of which policies or procedures should be followed may

discuss the matter with the Dean of Students, Director of Human Resources, or the Title IX coordinator.

University policies provide the opportunity for students to file informal concerns or complaints, or

formal grievances concerning any member of the University community while acting in an official

capacity (e.g. faculty member, administrator, staff member). Information regarding procedures may be

obtained from the Academic Center and/or the Office of Student Development.

Following the investigation, evaluation, and resolution of the formal grievance, the student and the

University department/college will receive a written report of the outcome of the dispute. If the

student’s concern is not resolved at the formal grievance level, then the student is able to submit a final

formal written grievance to the President by following the procedures outlined below.

This policy and form may be accessed in the Student Green Book at http://www.okbu.edu/student-

life/student-grievance-policy. Any complaint or grievance regarding the College of Nursing should be

logged into the Grievance/Complaint Log located in College of Nursing.

Counseling of Students Addresses safety, professionalism, and/or behavior. A more detailed listing can be found in the OBU

Faculty Handbook (https://www.okbu.edu/documents/handbooks/faculty-handbook.pdf) under section

5.5.1, entitled “Counseling”.

The Student Counseling Record (https://www.okbu.edu/nursing/documents/student-counseling-

record.pdf) should be completed, providing details of the event, instruction provided, and a

recommended action. It is to be kept in the student’s file and should be signed by both the faculty

member and student. Follow-up documentation should be provided indicating resolution of the matter,

or if counseling is ongoing.

Emergency Procedures Emergency communication - https://www.okbu.edu/about/documents/emergency-communication-

procedures.pdf

Incident Reports Incident Report forms (https://www.okbu.edu/academics/documents/incident-report-form.pdf) are to

be completed for incidents in the CoN and at clinical agencies. The reports provide a summary of the

event, course of action taken, as well as an action plan to prevent further incidents.

Inclement Weather Policy In recognition of the large amount of time spent off campus during clinical activities, the OBU College of

Nursing grants the course coordinator and clinical instructor responsibility for each clinical group and

the right to decide whether or not to cancel a clinical due to weather. The clinical coordinator should be

notified first of any cancellation. It is however, the responsibility of the clinical instructor to contact each

student at least 2 hours before students are required to be at the clinical site. It is recommended that

the instructor collect contact information for each student either during clinical orientation or by the

first day of the clinical rotation. For further information, see the OBU Faculty Handbook

(https://www.okbu.edu/documents/handbooks/faculty-handbook.pdf) under Appendix G for the

campus-wide inclement weather policy.

31

Faculty Evaluation, Promotion, Orientation

Adjunct Orientation Policy Adjunct faculty must participate in the College of Nursing orientation, a course orientation, and a

student and course evaluation. The College of Nursing orientation includes completion of the adjunct

orientation checklist. All new adjuncts are required to complete this orientation; repeating adjuncts

may be exempt if no significant changes have been added. The course orientation will be completed

with the course coordinator. Adjunct faculty members are expected to attend student orientation to the

course as part of the clinical teaching hours. Additionally, there will be an end-of-course evaluation time

regarding both the course and students which will be completed with the course coordinator.

Conflict of Interest and Outside Employment Faculty are required to report any conflicts of interest and outside employment. A letter requesting

approval prior to the start of work must be submitted to the Dean and President.

Graduate Faculty Status All faculty teaching graduate courses in the College of Graduate and Professional Studies must be

doctorally or professionally qualified and must be appointed to the graduate faculty. Graduate faculty

should be differentiated from other faculty by their experience teaching at the graduate level,

professional experience, and qualifications which demonstrate mastery in their respective profession

and a demonstration of active scholarship of discovery/integration/application/teaching.

All faculty who desire to teach graduate courses in the College of Graduate and Professional Studies

shall apply for appointment as graduate faculty. A candidate may apply by submitting a letter and

resume or CV to the appropriate Academic Dean or Program Director prior to the commencement of

classes.

After ensuring a candidate meets the requirements of the program, the Academic Dean or Program

Director will present the faculty member to the Graduate Council for approval. The application portfolio

should include the following.

A letter from the faculty member stating the request to apply for graduate faculty status.

A letter of recommendation from the appropriate Academic Dean.

A letter of recommendation from the Program Director and/or a graduate faculty member.

The faculty’s resume or CV reflective of the necessary education, work experience, professional

experience, and professional development.

An affirmative supermajority vote (2/3rds) of the Graduate Council is required for approval of Graduate

Faculty status.

Documentation of the courses taught by each Graduate Faculty member shall be retained by the

Academic Dean or Program Director. A list of all Graduate Faculty and the courses they have taught will

be provided annually to the Graduate Council.

Revocation of graduate faculty status may proceed at the discretion of the Provost in consultation with

the Academic Dean or Program Director.

Testing, Program Progression

ATI Mastery Exam Preparation Requirements For all courses that require a Mastery ATI Exam:

Advise students in the course syllabus that, prior to entry to the ATI Mastery Exam, they would

need to provide proof of completing the practice exam(s) that are congruent with the Mastery

Exam.

There are two practice exams available for each Mastery Exam.

o The Course Coordinator will unlock the practice exams 2 weeks prior to the scheduled

ATI Mastery Exam.

o Limit student attempts to 1 per test.

o Students will be advised to take the practice exam once to achieve 80% or more.

o Students will also be advised that they need to take the exams independently – not in

groups of students.

o If the student makes 80% on the first practice exam, then there is no need to take a

second practice test.

o If the student fails to reach 80% on the first practice test, then they need to take the

second practice test a minimum of 24 hours later. It is expected that they would review

content and prepare for the second attempt.

o Completion of the ATI exam attached to any course is required for course completion.

To enter the first attempt at the Mastery Exam, they will need to provide a printed copy of their

exam result(s) to the proctor for the Mastery Exam.

o Failure to reach 80% on either of the practice exams will not prevent entry to the

Mastery Exam.

o If the student fails to reach Level 2 on the first Mastery Test and they are required to

take it a second time, entry to the exam will require that the students do a focused

review, handwritten on paper, to give to the Exam Proctor.

The Course Coordinator will review the scores on the practice tests, and compare those scores

to the performance of the students on the Mastery Test. This comparison of scores, student by

student, will be provided to the Team Leader and then passed along to the Chair of the

Academic Affairs Committee to determine if a change in this policy is needed. Recommendation

of this committee is to review these comparisons to establish a target benchmark for future

semesters.

Communication of Test and Course Grade Policy Test and assignment grades will be posted in JupiterGrades for the student to review. Final course

grades will be posted to Banner. Final course grades will be posted after all exams are complete for that

level.

Page 35: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

35

Exam Review Policy At the end of each computer-administered exam, students will be invited to review incorrect exam

answers in the time frame allotted by course faculty.

Students will not be provided access to specific exam questions outside of this allotted time. If a student

desires further content review, he or she is expected to schedule a meeting with course faculty to

discuss content and strategies for academic success.

Late/Make-Up Exam Policy Students are expected to take all exams at the scheduled times. In the event a student is unable to take

the test at the scheduled time, the faculty responsible for the course shall be notified prior to the

administration of the test. When a student is unable to take an exam at the scheduled time, an

alternative exam will be given. The alternative form will be decided by the faculty for that course and

will include a non-objective component (for example: case study, essay discussion) worth 15% of the

total exam grade will be included.

It is the responsibility of the student to contact the appropriate faculty to schedule a make-up exam. The

make-up exam must be scheduled within one week of the original exam date. If the make- up exam is

not completed within two weeks, a zero may be recorded for that exam.

This follows the OBU Green Book Student Handbook policy, Section 4.1.2

CoN Comprehensive Testing Policy The College of Nursing (CoN) approved testing system will be used to monitor progress of the student

throughout the curriculum. Each student will purchase the CoN approved testing system which is to

include tutorials, remediation, and nationally normed exams for all critical content areas. Tutorials,

practice exams, and remediation will be mapped to fit the CoN curriculum and will be incorporated into

each course's directed learning activities.

At the end of each semester, appropriate exams will be administered. The student should achieve a pre-

determined score (for example, ATI Level II) if the course content has been mastered. Upon completion

of the curriculum, the student must demonstrate he/she has achieved the benchmark level of

proficiency on all required exams. The comprehensive NCLEX exam (for example, ATI RN-Predictor) must

be successfully completed at the national average. The student will have a second opportunity to

achieve the required benchmark on exam. It is expected that the student will self-remediate identified

weaknesses using the available resources before the second exam attempt. If he/she has not

successfully achieved the benchmark on all designated exams after two attempts, the student will be

required to provide proof of completion of an NCLEX review course before the final transcript will be

released.

To achieve the identified benchmark on all exams, it is anticipated that throughout the curriculum the

student will understand and use all available tutorial and practice exam resources to remediate

identified areas of weakness. Completion of the ATI exam attached to any course is required for course

completion.

Progression Criteria See Oklahoma Baptist University’s College of Nursing website for full Progression Criteria

Once a student has been admitted to the College of Nursing, the following progression criteria must be

met to remain in the program:

1. Student must achieve at least a C in all the following courses: CHEM 1124, BIOL 2354, SOCI 1223,

BIOL 2274, BIOL 2364, MATH 1163, PSYC 1223, MATH 2003, NURS 1101, NURS 2013, NURS 2024

and all nursing Area of Concentration courses.

2. A student is limited in the numbers of pre-requisite, supportive, and Nursing Area of

Concentration courses that can be repeated. (See list of pre-requisite and supportive courses in

Admission Criteria.) If a student is unsuccessful in a third pre-requisite, supportive, or nursing

area of concentration course which has been taken at any institution, at the time of the third

failure, s/he will not be able to continue working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing

at OBU.

3. A student may repeat any course only once.

4. Achieve a 95% score on a Mathematics Dosage Calculation Exam each semester.

5. Achieve a minimum average of 75% on exams in NURS 2024.

6. Achieve a minimum average of 70% on exams in all nursing courses except NURS 2024.

7. Maintain current CPR, TB, drug screen, background check, and all required immunizations and

any other clinical requirements requested by the clinical agencies.

Page 37: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

37

Non-Native English Speakers Policy A Non-Native English Speaker (NNES) may self-identify or may be identified by faculty or admission

counselor. Any NNES is required to score a level 8 or higher on the OBU Intensive English Program’s (IEP)

English Placement Test prior to admission to the college of nursing. When identified the NNES will be

directed to the IEP program for evaluation ([email protected]). A student who fails to score a level 8 can

choose to participate in the OBU IEP program for remediation. A level 8 on the English Placement Test

must be achieved by the third attempt.

Theory Course Exam Policy In all nursing courses, a student must have an average of 70% on the written exams for the course in

order to pass the course, except NURS 1101 and NURS 2024. In NURS 2024, students must have an

average of 75% on written exams. This initial average will be an arithmetic average (subject to the Exam

Scores and Rounding Course Grades Policy), adding all exam scores and dividing by the number of

exams). The grade for any assignment other than a written exam will be calculated into the course grade

only after the 70% or 75% average has been met. Refer to the syllabus of the specific course for further

explanation.

Page 38: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

38

Test Security Policy To insure test security, the CoN will use the following guidelines in working with exams:

1. Each exam will have no less than 50% new questions.

2. Published test banks will not be used. Any question which is drawn from a published test bank

will be revised by changing the correct answer and one of the following: change 2 distractors or

significantly revise the stem statement.

3. Test questions for students should be randomized so no exam is like the exam of the student

sitting adjacent.

4. Exams are to include multiple types of questions of the same type as the NCLEX exam. No exam

should contain only multiple choice items. From the NCSBN: Types of Items on the NCLEX-RN® Examination – During the administration of the

NCLEX-RN Examination, candidates will be required to respond to items in a variety of formats. These

formats may include, but are not limited to: multiple-choice, multiple response, fill-in-the-blank

calculation, ordered response, and/or hot spots. All item types may include multimedia, such as

charts, tables, graphics, sound and video. For more information, visit www.ncsbn.org/2334.htm.

2013 NCLEX-RN® Detailed Test Plan - Candidate Version

5. All exams will be peer reviewed for question structure, clarity and accuracy by a full time faculty

member. The exam should be ready for peer review one full week before it is scheduled to be

given.

6. All exams will be password protected at all access points, including on one’s personal computer.

7. During an online exam, Lockdown Browser or a like system to prevent moving from the exam

page will be activated.

8. Each room required for an exam will have its own proctor.

9. Every exam will have a start time, end time, and will be set to allow one attempt only.

10. The exam password should be changed once all students are logged in and the exam is started

to prevent re-entry into the exam after a student leaves the room.

11. The faculty proctoring the exam should, as needed, observe the students from the rear of the

computer lab where the computer screen can be observed. Having a second faculty to assist in

proctoring the exams might be considered.

12. Only one sheet of paper, a pencil, and calculator may be provided by the proctor to each

student; unless otherwise stated these are the only items allowed for use during course and ATI

examinations. These items will be collected by the proctor at the termination of the exam and

counted to verify all pages, pencils, and calculators disseminated have been returned.

13. A student grade change of 20% or greater between exams will be investigated and the

investigation will be documented.

14. Students will not be allowed to wear or bring into the testing environment cell phones, watches,

or other devices that can send or receive text messages, photographs, or access the Internet.

Other options to enhance test security can include:

15. Assign seats for each exam.

16. Allow no returning to earlier questions (progression through exams will be forward only)

17. Consider having the student request permission to be dismissed after finishing the exam by

raising a hand at which time the faculty can check to see that the exam has been submitted and

after verifying this, can dismiss the student from the exam room.

Page 39: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

39

Testing Alternative Due to Technological Difficulty In the event of a technological difficulty during testing, if a student is required to restart the exam more

than one time, the student will be given a paper exam to complete. There will be no other opportunities

to re-test.

Scores and Rounding Course Grades Policy), adding all exam scores and dividing by the number of

exams. The grade for any assignment other than a written exam will be calculated into the course grade

only after the 70% or 75% avg. has been met. Refer to the syllabus for the specific course for further

explanation.

Test Preparation and Mapping Policy The faculty of the Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing believe that examinations are a

primary and valid tool for assessing the knowledge and critical thinking ability of a student. Therefore, a

test mapping policy is critical and should be followed by all faculty members.

Development of Examinations

Development of examinations should be a team effort with involvement of multiple members of the

teaching team. A blueprint should be developed for each exam and posted in the online platform as well

as the O drive.

Each exam should be tested for internal consistency using the Kuder Richardson or Cronbach Alpha

analysis. Each exam should be evaluated by all faculty teaching in the course, or in conjunction with an

experienced peer if there is only one faculty in the course. This is to determine if changes are needed to

strengthen future exams.

The following are the test mapping criteria to be used in exam development for each course throughout

the nursing program:

a) Class objectives to be tested on the exam.

b) The level of difficulty of the exam questions. (Guidance has been given for 90% of each course,

which allows the faculty a 10% window to adjust level of difficulty appropriate to level of

content or professional development of student.)

facts, principles, and procedures. Requires rewording of memorized facts and use in a

new situation. Must be able to explain, distinguish, and predict at this level. This is the

lowest level of understanding. Example:

The heart’s function is to:

A) Pump blood

B)

Application: Refers to ability to take knowledge from 2 areas or concepts, make general

abstractions, and apply to concrete situations. It involves the application of learned

principles to the solution of presented problems. At this level, the student is required to

demonstrate, act, intervene, apply, solve, or modify. Example:

The heart’s function is to:

A) Perfuse the body with oxygenated blood.

B)

Analysis: Involves breaking down a whole communication into its parts and being able to

understand the relationship between the parts. The student is required to analyze,

evaluate, select, differentiate, interpret, judge, or prioritize. Example:

The heart’s function is to:

A) Meet the body’s oxygen and nutrient needs.

B)

41

Evaluate: To determine the value or worth of something according to specified criteria. To

evaluate, we must have knowledge of what is being judged, as well as knowledge of the

judgement criteria. Example:

The heart’s function is:

A) Critical to cell survival

B)

Creating (Synthesis): This is the highest level of the cognitive domain. During synthesis,

information is combined in new and meaningful ways. It involves the ability to bring

separate parts together to form a whole that did not previously exist, and make

judgements about the value of materials and methods for given purposes. The student

is required to develop, organize, create, or generate. Example:

The heart’s function is:

A) Similar in nature to the function of the GI tract

B)

c) Each exam should also be reflective of the current NCLEX-RN test plan categories and

percentages, as well. (www.ncsbn.org)

ATI Incentive Policy For courses with an associated ATI Proctored Assessment, the assessment should be worth 5% over and

above the course grade. The current program benchmark is a Level 2. To earn the full additional 5%, a

student must have a passing exam average in the course and meet the Level 2 benchmark on the first

attempt. If the student with a passing exam average makes a Level 2 on the second attempt, he/she

would earn an additional 2.5%. If the student with a passing exam average fails to meet a Level 2 by the

second attempt, he/she will earn no additional points.

For courses associated with two different ATI Proctored Assessments, the maximum number of earned

additional percentage points between the combined proctored assessments shall be 5%

Rounding of Exams and Course Grades Leave all exams to the hundredth place (not rounded up). Test averages will be taken to the hundredth

place. Rounding is only done with the final course grades, to the nearest whole number.

For example, 69.49 will translate to a 69 for a final exam grade. 69.50 will translate to a 70 on the final

course grade.

Dosage Calculation Exams In addition to the dosage calculation exam required for admission to the upper division courses, a

dosage calculation exam is administered each semester. The level of difficulty of these exams increases

as the student progresses in the nursing curriculum. Furthermore, questions concerning dosage

calculation are generally a part of each exam in most didactic courses. A student enrolled in a practicum

and/or lab course will be required to take the dosage calculation exam. A 95% is required on the dosage

calculation exam each semester to pass.

All students are allowed three attempts to achieve this score. In the event that a student does not pass

the dosage calculation exam given in any semester, the student should utilize the ATI Dosage Calculation

Module for Remediation. Remediation strategies may include working with the Student Success Center,

identifying problem areas, reduction of test anxiety, and working assigned problems.

Students who do not achieve the score of 95% on the third attempt will be required to withdraw from

all practicum courses for that semester. Students will be considered for readmission based on space

available. Absence from a scheduled dosage calculation exam may be considered a failure and will count

as one of the required attempts.

Calculators may be used for the dosage calculation exams at faculty discretion. Calculators will be

supplied by the College of Nursing for dosage calculation exams.

guided by the following:

Remove all trash from tables and dispose of in trash bins

Clean microwave after each use

No chairs will be removed from the faculty lounge area or classrooms

No food, or liquids other than water, is admitted in the classrooms or simulation labs. All water should

be in clear containers. No liquids of any kind are allowed in the computer lab.

Substance Use Policy

Statement of Philosophy

The College of Nursing supports the University policy prohibiting possession and/or distribution of

alcohol and illicit drugs by students, employees, and others on University premises or in connection with

any University activity. Further, the University may discipline a student for the violation of alcohol or

drug laws wherever that violation occurs.

The nursing faculty members at Oklahoma Baptist University believe they have an ethical and

professional responsibility to provide a safe teaching and learning environment for students. Nursing

faculty also have an obligation to insure the safety of clients who receive nursing care from OBU nursing

students.

Indications of Possible Substance Abuse

Manifestations of substance abuse are variable. However, the following categories may be indications

of this problem:

Physiologic:

Slurred or rapid speech

Trembling hands; persistent rhinorrhea

Altered pupil dilation

Flushed face

Red eyes

Swollen face

Odor or scent of chemical or substance

Unsteady gait

Hand tremors

Slurred speech

Declining health

Behavioral:

Excessive absenteeism and/or marked changes in class attendance

Changes in punctuality

Late assignments with elaborate excuses for not meeting deadlines

Page 45: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

45

Reduced attentiveness in classroom and/or clinical setting

Isolation or withdrawal from peers and faculty

Unsafe clinical performance resulting in placing clients at risk

Errors in decision-making in clinical settings

Leaving clinical area frequently

Illogical or sloppy charting

Decreasing classroom and/or clinical productivity

Changes in mental status: forgetfulness, confusion, decreased alertness, extreme mood

swings, irritability

Dishonesty

Changes in personal appearance, such as an unkempt appearance

Memory loss

Process for Addressing Suspected Substance Abuse

When a nursing faculty member observes characteristics of substance abuse by a nursing student in the

clinical (simulation lab, skills lab) or classroom setting:

The student will be removed to a private area where the faculty will talk with the student

concerning these observations.

The student will be given an opportunity to respond to the faculty’s observations.

If this incident occurs within a clinical setting:

The student will be relieved immediately of further clinical responsibilities for that day.

The student will be required to provide a for-cause urine drug screen at his/her expense within

two hours of the incident. If time exceeds two hours, the drug screen will be considered a

positive.

This specimen will be sent to a certified medical laboratory from a list provided by the College of

Nursing.

Notification of Use of Prescribed and/or Over-the-Counter Medication

The student must notify the College of Nursing clinical faculty, course coordinator, and/or advisor

whenever he/she is taking a prescribed or over-the-counter drug that the student has been advised will,

or based on the drug profile is likely to, impair job performance (e.g., drowsiness, diminished ability to

focus).

The notification should occur prior to attending clinical rotation at any site. The student will be assessed

by faculty to determine if they are safe to enter the clinical site.

Section IV: Simulation

Simulation Lab Guidelines The following policies and guidelines have been developed in order to preserve the resources of the

Simulation Lab and protect the safety of those utilizing the learning center. The CoN Simulation Lab is a

place to integrate high fidelity simulation into undergraduate education to enhance the educational

experience of our students and enable them to experience real-life scenarios in a safe clinical

environment.

Simulation Lab Policies

1. All learners will be in uniform/clinical attire, including name tag, while participating in simulation

learning activities.

2. Learners should bring standard equipment (stethoscope, assessment tools, calculator) required

for clinical during simulation experiences.

3. CoN uniform policy will be followed by all faculty and student in the simulation lab. (i.e.,

instructors will wear lab coats or uniforms when conducting simulations, closed-toe shoes must

be worn when in the simulation center)

4. Learners will wash their hands to remove stains, ink, or oils before activities start.

5. No food or beverages are allowed in the simulation area.

6. Only pencils are allowed in the simulation area. No pens or markers.

7. Standard precautions will be adhered to in the simulation area as in the clinical area.

8. Once the simulation experience is completed, learners must restore the simulator and

environment to baseline status.

9. After a simulation experience, learners should not share details and activities with learners who

have not participated in the learning experience.

10. All students will sign a confidentiality statement prior to their simulation experience. This will

also include an agreement to be recorded for evaluation purposes. This will be HIPAA-based

and a violation of this statement will be treated as a violation of patient confidentiality and

subject to the CoN counseling policy.

11. Consents to be photographed and videotaped will be obtained from all learners and faculty.

12. The simulation lab is to be used for simulation activities only.

Scheduling

1. Clinical coordinators must work in coordination with the simulation director to develop and

implement clinical scenarios. Clinical coordinators must submit dates to the simulation director

the semester prior to all clinical experiences. Clinical faculty/adjuncts will participate in clinical

simulations.

2. The simulation director will post a calendar indicating times that the simulation lab is booked.

Classes and sections will be identified.

3. Please refer to the simulation calendar for times and dates of course simulations.

Page 47: Oklahoma Baptist University College of Nursing Faculty ...The nursing curriculum is built on the foundation of liberal arts, a Judeo-Christian, faith-based understanding of humanity,

47

Guidelines for Faculty Scenario Preparation

1. At least 6 weeks prior to each simulation experience, the course coordinator is to submit the

scenarios chosen to the simulation director.

2. The appropriate preparation work for students’ simulation assignments will be forwarded to the

course coordinator by the simulation director who will be responsible to post in the learning

management system.

3. Two weeks prior to the simulation, the course coordinator is to inform the simulation director if

any modifications are wanted in the scenario.

4. The course coordinator and clinical faculty all must participate in a walk-through simulation one

week prior to their scheduled reserved Simulation Lab time in order to provide optimal learning

experiences.

5. The course coordinator is responsible for scheduling time with the simulation director for the

walk-through. All participants must be present.

6. Prior to simulation, the course coordinator, simulation director, and clinical faculty are to

formulate evaluation criteria.

7. Prior to simulation, the course coordinator, simulation director, and clinical faculty are to

formulate debriefing objectives, question, and guidelines.

8. Debriefing will occur immediately after each simulated scenario and continue for at least the

same length of time as the scenario.

9. The student should complete an evaluation of the simulation and debriefing experience prior to

the end of the debriefing session.

10. The course coordinator and clinical faculty will complete and evaluation of the simulation and

debriefing experience at the end of the debriefing session.

Pass/Fail Scale Grading for Simulation All Simulation courses are pass/fail courses. In order to successfully compete the courses and earn a

passing grade, you must achieve 70% of the available 210 points by the end of the courses. Each of the

simulation experiences will worth a total of 35 points as outlined below:

Completion of preparation items as assigned 5 points

Adherence to dress code 5 points

Simulation participation 10 points

Debriefing participation 10 points

Completion of post-simulation feedback 5 points

TOTAL 35 points
