Objective:

Goals:

The purpose of the Okaloosa County History Institute is to present Okaloosa County history in a variety of ways, in an effort to increase the knowledge of local history to teachers

and provide them with the tools to bring history alive in Okaloosa County.

The History Institute will encourage local history integration in all subject areas – social studies, math, science, art,

geography, language arts, physical education, and music.

The History Institute will promote the use of resources such as cultural organizations, educational references, guest speakers,

and special programming in the classroom.

Partner Organizations:The Okaloosa County History Institute is the first of its kind in Northwest Florida. The History Institute was designed through

the partnership of six cultural organizations and The School District of Okaloosa County, all vested in local collaborative

education.

Selecting the Organizations:

Selection based on what each organization can contribute

to the overall history of the region.

EXAMPLE: Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida offers history/collections of the county and the region: Native Americans, Pioneer Era, Land Boom and Bust, World War II era.

EXAMPLE: Carver Hill Museum is the sole museum in the county dedicated to local African American history.

Content and Curriculum

Each day, the Institute will take place at a different partnering organization. Participating teachers will experience lectures provided by local historians, panel discussions, tours, and workshop sessions.

The History Institute will provide in-depth coverage of content instruction for teaching Okaloosa County History- People and Places in 4th -12th grades.

The Okaloosa County History Institute fulfills the need for the distribution of resources to educate students about local history, architecture, preservation, and culture, as well as expands local history outreach into the community.

Enrollment Goals• 25-50 teacher applications

• Enrollment is first come, first served

• Open to 4th – 12th grade teachers (Studies, Civics, US History)

• 20 teacher capacity enrollment

•Goal: 15 graduated teachers

Teachers Receive:

• 3-ring binder and resource materials

• 30 in-service points (classroom application)

•A certificate of achievement

•A stipend for food and gas

Lessons Learned• Overbook by 5 teachers, Max. class is 25 teachers

• Refundable registration fee of $25

• Must attend all 5 days to receive stipend, deposit, and be in-service eligible

• Offer follow-up opportunities at each Partner Site during the school year i.e., classroom visits, free busing for field trips, etc.

• Teachers will be required to send Participant Sites samples of what students complete in classroom

• Offer resource outreach to teachers throughout the school year

• Add a visit to the Glades (field trip or Partner Site)

• Include Public Relations staff to coordinateMedia alerts, press releases, and photography

• Request of Okaloosa County Schools to oversee teacher registration.

•Considering a date change to August for schedule conflict and grant cycles.

HMNF develops a partnership with the Okaloosa County School District:

•In the planning stage, HMNF Administrators meet with the appropriate K-12 Curriculum Planner.

•Curriculum Planner assigned a Component number to the HMNF and determined the amount of eligible in-service points .

•After the Institute, the Curriculum Planner receives all submissions for teacher in-service points (including component evaluations).
