THE CHARLES POINT COUNCIL 2016 Lecture and Field Trip Program NATIONAL MARITIME HISTORICAL SOCIETY 5 John Walsh Boulevard, PO Box 68 Peekskill, NY 10566 Phone: 914-737-7878, ext. 0. Web site: www.seahistory.org E-mail: [email protected] WHO WE ARE: The Charles Point Council was founded in 1992 under the auspices of the National Maritime Historical Society at its headquarters on Charles Point in Peekskill, New York. Its mission is to build greater awareness of the rich seafaring heritage of the Hudson River Valley and the world at large, and to create a constituency to advocate for our maritime legacy. Through its monthly lecture series and annual outreach events, the Charles Point Council is actively engaged in promoting our maritime heritage, in providing valuable educational programs and in preserving historic ships. Since its inception, the Council has organized over 200 lectures, seminars, field trips and ship preservation projects featuring noted authors, historians and artists to publicize the maritime history of our area. Such projects include initiating the renovation of Peekskill’s Charles Point Park and the restoration of China Pier (now renamed Fleischmann Pier); organizing the only Parade of Tall Ships on the Hudson in the 20 th century to celebrate Rockland County’s bicentennial; exhibiting at the 50 th Anniversary of D-Day aboard the Intrepid Museum; researching the whaling ports of the Hudson for Ernestina’s visit to promote the legacy of whaling ships; and reenacting a Revolutionary War naval battle for the United States Military Academy at West Point, to name just a few! Members of the general public are most welcome to attend—Charles Point Council events are both a way to learn about new facets of our maritime heritage and a way to meet others who share an interest and enthusiasm for the field.
