Oil SpillsScientific, Technological, Societal, and
Environmental Perspective
By: Kayla, Julia S., Julia W.
Remember that time when you spilled Coke on your PS3 and you
thought it was the worst spill ever?
Well, it wasn’t...
Scientific Perspective - Julia SWhat is an oil spill?
-A form of pollution usually due to human activity-The release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment
Where is the pollution produced?
-Oil spills into rivers, bays, oceans, coastal waters and also on land
How is the pollution produced?
-Pollution is caused by oil spills, routine shipping, run-offs, dumping, pipelines bursts/ equipments breaking down, natural disasters (hurricanes)
Technological Perspective- Julia SHow can oil be cleaned up and removed?
-A boom-A skimmer-A sorbent-A high-pressure/low-pressure hose-A vacuum truck
Societal Perspective - Kayla
MiscarriageKills Fish
Makes you Sick
Oil spills can affect many things. From plants, to animals, to
humans. Everything in this world is connected in a way,
where we can taste our own medicine.
Environmental Perspective - Julia W
Environmental issues of oil spills -All living things are negatively impacted by oil spills-Water and land can be contaminated
Effects on the food web -Oil spills affect all life in a food web Animal health-Effects species nesting and breeding area as well as their habitat-Migratory patterns are can be interfered with.-Animals get covered in oil
ConclusionJulia S. - Pollution has become a severe problem with many long term and short term effects. The technology and equipment used to remove oil is not always effective and the amount of oil pollution needs to be reduced immediately before there is nothing that can be done to clean it.
Kayla - Societal perspective on the other hand, oil spills have a great effect on humans. This obviously isn’t good.
Julia W. - Environmentally, oil spills are polluting the land and water. They are also destroying animals health and food webs. We have to put a stop to oil spills.
