The Challenge for Reliable Data

Sub-Saharan Africa has been a fast-emerging producer of palm oil for the past 15 years, with huge foreign investments in plantation companies, yet its official data on oil palm are imperfect and inconsistent. First, there is no inventory of traditional palm groves, which are usually fully integrated in family farms activities. Second, there is no inventory of palm varieties in land areas. The most frequently observed varieties on family farms and in industrial plantations are dura and tenera, respectively, with occasional open pollination between dura, tenera and pisifera; consequently, an important disparity is observed in the FFB (Fresh Fruit Bunches) yield within one country. Third, we observe some delay in expanding plantations due to local population strikes or the denunciation of deforestation, and huge investments have sometimes silently collapsed. In order to produce the coherent outcome presented in this report, we have undertaken a painstaking process to evaluate and reconcile conflicting data on area, yields, extraction rates and production. Over the course of many months, we have analyzed these data, cross-checking them with (agro industrial) plantation companies. The result is a consistent baseline dataset, unavailable elsewhere, which provides a strong foundation for our report.

Benchmarking the Performance of Plantation Companies

The Oil Palm Benchmark provides a forward-looking, detailed view of the sector in sub Saharan African countries. Among its core features are the productions of FFB, CPO (Crude Palm Oil) and CPKO (Crude Palm Kernel Oil), by individual companies during the period 2010-2018. The key metrics presented include:

· Ownership Structure and shareholders’ description;

· Palm Oils Production, taking into account: evolving age profile of trees, growth in oil palm areas, planting/replanting rates, yield developments and underlying yield growth, extraction rates, and outsourcing (through smallholder’s alliances);

· Sustainability concerns and commitments;

· Latest Investments such as mills, new kernel crushing plant, growth in oil palm areas, stakeholder’s strategic alliances;

· Downstream Processing: refining, fractionation and bottling operations

Our report also covers the Performance Benchmarks. The key performance indicators include: FFB yield, plantation maturity (assessing how reported yields are affected by the age distribution of their estates), extraction rates and efficiency for individual palm oil companies compared with their peers (companies with a similar area under palm) as well as with Asian averages. Finally, our report reveals the True Profitability of African companies against their competitors by comparing return to scale and sensitivity of profits.
