RAPIDITY: the required t ime for data acquisit ion with the 3D laser scanner is ver y shor t , compared to any other measurement methods or technologies;

COST REDUC TION: a large quantity of data can be acquired in a shor t period of t ime, by fewer staff members; there is no inter ference with other activit ies carr ied out in the area to be scanned;

SAFETY: ver y low r isk of work accidents during the laser scanning; i t can be used in diff icult environments, without affecting the integrity of the scanned objects and the safety of the operators;

3 D L A S E R S C A N N I N G 3D laser scanning is the newest technology used in the f ie ld of land sur vey. Bas ical ly, a large amount of spat ia l data is quick ly and accurately captured ( X , Y, Z) , us ing laser beam s ignals ref lec ted by the objec ts or sur faces to be scanned.

I nternat ional Par tner Buro uses the latest laser scanner models which can measure mi l l ions of points in the t r id imensional space. The result i s the point c loud, an accurate 3D representat ion of objec ts, which can be del ivered ef f ic ient ly to the c l ient .

Af ter process ing the point c loud us ing specia l ized sof t ware, we can generate 2D plans and 3D models of a l l the scanned objec ts. The data can be accessed in real - t ime or af ter the process ing, constra int and georeferencing techniques.

We opted for the Faro Focus scanners to be used due to their l ightness and minimal s ize that a l lowed us to work in t ight , i r regular spaces and to carr y the equipment comfor tably a long the 260-meter length of the vessel .

D ATA CO L L E C T I O N

The biggest chal lenge we had to overcome when digit iz ing the vessel ’s process ing area was documenting the environmental condit ions of the space.

A large number of scans were peformed in order to capture a l l the detai ls , due to the high complexit y of the area that had to be scanned.

D ATA P R O C E S S I N G

The Faro Scene sof t ware was used for scans registrat ion. The or ientat ion of the scans was per formed in the vessel ’s coordinate system, in t wo steps, as fo l lows:

- in step one, the scans were registered to each other us ing the target registrat ion method;

- in step t wo, a c loud to c loud registrat ion was per formed in order to improve the accurac y of the scans registrat ion.

The 3D laser scanning result i s represented by a data col lec t ion k nown as “point c loud”. The posit ion of each point i s def ined in a 3D coordinate system via i ts X , Y, Z coordinates.

The point c louds are an authent ic , complete and accurate copy of the real i t y, that can not be atta ined by another means or method of measurements ;

Based on the point c louds, a detai led research of the insta l lat ion’s/plant ’s state can be per formed;

3D point c louds a l low accurate measurements of d istances and sur faces, represent ing the star t ing point for the intel l igent 3D model ;

The poss ibi l i t y to per form c lash detec t ion / inter ference checks bet ween exist ing condit ions and new designed elements.

IPB WebShare is an online or off l ine web platform which provides the user with the advantage of being able to per form a remote vir tual tour of the scanned area. Our cl ient is able to visual ize the project and download the necessar y data, from al l over the world, just with an active internet connection.

3D measurements:The general map offers the possibi l i ty of measuring distances and areas, and the 3D view al lows measuring of point-to-point distances.

360° panoramic view: HD panoramic images are avai lable on the IPB WebShare platform or in SceneLT, free software. Each panoramic posit ion provides a 360° view, including al l the detai ls recorded during the laser scanning.

Access for authorized users:Authorized users have access to the or iginal 3D data through the download option and may examine it using the free software SceneLT.
