Where is oil found? Oil and natural gas are found

in the pore spaces surrounding grains of sedimentary rocks.

In this form oil is often called “crude oil”

It must be pumped to the surface by machines

What is oil? Oil is a mixture of different hydro-carbon

chains

Oil is a fossil fuel which means it takes millions of years to form

It is made from dead sea creatures that have been crushed over millions of years by sediment falling on top of them

Fractional Distillation Fractional Distillation is where oil is

heated up and condenses at different fractions (temperatures)

The different fractions are different fuels such as petrol, kerosene and bitumen

These refined fuels can be burned to produce heat energy.

Oil Fired Power Stations Oil is easier than coal to transport and can be

piped great distances.

A fossil-fuelled power station can be built almost anywhere.

Oil power stations take longer to start up than coal power stations.

Burning oil produces sulphur and carbon dioxide. Responsible for acid rain and global warming.
