Our expertise

ARSU has extensive experience in carrying out environmental impact assessments in marine habitats. We have consulted on a wide range of projects and carried them through to successful approval, including oil and gas platforms, exploratory and production drilling, seismic surveys, sand dredging operations, cable and pipeline laying as well as scouring protection installations. Many of these projects were in Natura 2000 sites areas and national parks. ARSU is also a consultant in the planning processforthefixedFehmarnBeltCrossing.

Well-founded and reliable consultation is essential in such environmentally-sensitive projects, whenever measures to avoid or reduce environmental impact are to be implemented. These measures often focus on the potential impact on harbour porpoise caused by sonic emissions.

Our service

Several companies are currently testing the potential for oil and gas reserves in the German exclusive economic zone of the North Sea and the 12 sea mile zone. Such prospecting operations involve exploratory drilling over a period of about three months, during which time a temporary drilling platform is erected on location.

ARSU is regularly commissioned to draw up environmental impact assessments including the requirements of species protection regulations and – depending on the location – appropriate assessments for Natura 2000 sites.

The main focus in such cases is the assessment of impact on the species and habitas under investigationbutwithspecificconsiderationoftheimpact of underwater sound emissions (particularly onharbourporpoiseandfish),opticalandbarriereffects, the total impacted project area, the handling of mud and cuttings and burning off gas.

New requirements have come into effect over the last few years due, mainly, to the implementation of the EU marine strategy framework directive, the EU directive on the safety of offshore oil and gas operations and recent amendments to environmental impact assessment procedure. Both the offshore directive and changes to environmental impact assessment regulations have had the effect of shifting the focus of attention more onto the risks and potential consequences of accidents and environmental catastrophes.
