A Man, a MountainMountains are huge and have always provided people what they need in great quantities. And there are fortunate cases where mountains offer Man something special, unique. Pedretti Graniti, working in the mountains with passion and respect for three generations, found a stone that made the company famous: Tonalite, or Adamello granite - a material with a very particular black and white colour and excellent technical features held in high regard in the building industry and in a huge range of decorative applications. When Man is aware of the laws and equilibriums of Nature and works with appropriate methods, a relationship with the mountain environment develops that is always respectful and attentive, whereby mountains in turn yield everything they hae to give.

From 1600 to today

The Pedretti family originally came from Comacchio and set-tled in the Brescia area during the XIV century, as witnessed by a ducal letter in 1447 where members of the dynasty are defined as “good, upstanding and worthy citizens of Brescia”. In 1600, Biagio Pedretti, for business reasons, settled and married in the Astrio pre-Alpine area, near Bienno, in Valle Camonica. In the 1800s, the Bienno branch of the Pedretti family built a large residence, where all the family members lived, almost all working as stone cutters and stone carvers. In the 1950s, the major hydro-electricity projects implemented around the glaciers of Adamello-Presanella-Carè Alto on the border between the Trentino region and Brescia saw teams of stone cutters quarry and process Tonalite to build dams, bridges and roads.

La montagna è grande, e da sempre fornisce all’uomo quello di cui ha bisogno in gran quantità. Esistono casi fortunati in cui la montagna regala all’uomo qualcosa di speciale, di unico. Pedretti Graniti, che con passio-ne e rispetto lavora in montagna da tre generazioni, ha trovato una pietra che l’ha resa celebre: è la Tonalite, o granito dell’Adamello, che per il particolare colore bianco e nero e per le sue pregevoli caratteristiche tecniche è apprezzata nell’edilizia e in svariati impie-ghi ornamentali. Quando l’uomo è consapevole delle leggi e degli equilibri della natura e quando lavora con i metodi appropriati, si rapporta alla montagna in un modo che è sempre rispettoso e attento e la monta-gna ricambia donando ciò che possiede.

Dal 1600 ad oggiLa famiglia Pedretti originaria di Comacchio si sta-bilisce nel Bresciano nel corso del XIV secolo, ne è testimonianza una lettera ducale del 1447 in cui i membri della dinastia sono riconosciuti “buoni, be-nemeriti e probi cittadini di Brescia”. Nel 1600 Biagio Pedretti, per motivi commerciali, si stanzia e prende moglie nella zona prealpina di Astrio, vicino a Bienno, in Valle Camonica. Nell’Ottocento il ramo Pedretti di Bienno costruisce un ampio caseggiato, dove i membri alloggiano con i loro familiari, quasi tutti editi al me-stiere di tagliapietre e scalpellini. Negli anni Cinquanta i grandi interventi idroelettrici intorno ai ghiacciai dell’Adamello-Presanella-Carè Alto sul confine Tren-tino-Bresciano vedono squadre di scalpellini estrarre e trasformare la Tonalite per la costruzione di dighe, ponti e strade.

Al termine dei lavori in VaI di Daone, nel 1956 mette radici in VaI Rendena con la sua famiglia Antonio Pe-dretti, classe 1914, dove con l’aiuto dei figli intrapren-de negli anni ‘60 un’attività in proprio. Nel 1976 i figli continuando il lavoro paterno formano una società tuttora in piena espansione. L’attività è strettamente legata all’estrazione, lavorazione e vendita della To-nalite. Fino alla meta degli anni ‘70 predominano le figure del tagliapietre e dello scalpellino. Con la co-struzione del laboratorio in zona industriale a Carisolo sia l’estrazione che la lavorazione vengono poi carat-terizzate dall’utilizzo di mezzi meccanici ed elettronici all’avanguardia rendendo possibile produrre lavorati di elevata qualità.

At the end of work in Val di Daone, Antonio Pedretti, born in 1914, settled with his family in Val Rendena in 1956 where, with the help of his sons, he set up his own business in the 1960s. In 1976, his sons continued the work of their father and set up a company that is still expanding today. Business ac-tivity is closely linked with quarrying, processing and sales of Tonalite. Until the mid-1970s, stone cutters and stone carvers were still the main figures. With the building of the workshop in the Carisolo industrial area, quarrying and processing alike saw the introduction of avant-garde engineering and elec-tronic systems capable of manufacturing very high quality products.

5Nella sorgente l’acqua trova al primo zampillo pietra e sassi sui quali scorrere; e poi nel suo lungo, antico cammino è sempre in compagnia della pietra. Per questo è bello bere dal granito: riporta alla freschezza dei monti, all’aria sottile d’alta quota, allo scorrere del fiume. L’acqua è viva nel suo fluttuare, il granito è vivo nel suo movimento di colori e di luce. La pietra e l’acqua sono elementi della natura che sempre vivono insieme.

Colours and light in granite

TONALITE OR ADAMELLO GRANITE Tonalite (or Adamello granite) is a material from Pedretti’s quarry in Val Genoa, in the province of Trento. It is a me-dium-grain quarzodiorite with biotite and hornblende, largely equigranular, with a holocrystalline ipidiomorph structure. Its black and white colour (salt and pepper) and technical features make it an ideal rock for applications in building and ornamental fields. Colours and light blend in the national and international granites, Trentino porphyry and stone materials in general processed and distributed by Pedretti Graniti.

Stone invigorates youThe first gush of water from a spring encounters rock and loose stone over which it flows; and then, over its long and ancient path, water is always accompanied by stone. This is why it is so fine to drink from granite: it recalls the fresh-ness of the mountains, the thin air high up and the flow of the river. Le fontaneLa fontana di pietra è un patrimonio della nostra tradi-zione che si lega a tanti momenti di vita e al nostro co-mune passato. È un piccolo mondo fatto di un rapporto quotidiano, nelle piazze e nei vicoli, e di tanti ricordi: le donne che un tempo si ritrovavano ogni giorno a lava-re, a raccontarsi, a stare insieme; la festa del paese; i giochi dei bambini; la freschezza e il ristoro per il vian-dante, e in tempi recenti per i turisti in esplorazione, per gli sportivi in allenamento. La fontana di granito deve la sua speciale armonia ai due elementi, acqua e granito, che rivivono il loro antico sposalizio in natura. Il recupero attento e rigoroso delle fontane antiche è un’attività che Pedretti accosta a quella principale del-la costruzione di fontane nuove, dallo stile tradizionale oppure moderno, dal piglio artistico o secondo i tratti il più innovativo design.

The fountainsStone fountains are part of our traditional heritage linked with so many episodes in life and our common past. La pietra viene lavorata con macchinari tecnologicamente avanzati. Dove non arriva la macchina interviene la maestria di abili scalpellini che pazientemente smussano ruvidità e spigolature finchè il particolare si completi e si equi-libri all’insieme.

Fin dalla più remota antichità l’uomo ha lavorato la pietra: simboli, immagini sacre, semplici decorazioni sono nate dal lavoro appassionato e instancabile di uomini che volevano comunicare in un modo che va-licasse la barriera del tempo. La pietra ha la capacità unica di resistere, di durare: le tracce più importanti della storia antica e della preistoria ci vengono for-nite da architetture e opere di pietra. Per questa sua caratteristica la pietra è stata scelta per diventare linguaggio. Ne è esempio la grande croce in granito posta sull’Adamello realizzata dalla Pedretti Graniti. Sotto i colpi di scalpelli esperti e determinati la pietra è stata protagonista di un miracolo: ha perso la sua naturale pesantezza, la sua consistenza grave e si è fatta leggerezza, armonia, incanto.

Stone inspires youMan has processed stone since the remotest Antiquity: sym-bols, holy images and simple decorations all emerged from the passionate and tireless work of men who wanted to commu-nicate something in a way that would overcome the barrier of time. Stone is uniquely strong and durable: the most important traces of ancient history and pre-history come down to us through architecture and works in stone. This is why stone was chosen to become a language. An example is the huge granite cross by Pedretti Graniti standing on the Adamello. Expert and determined stone carvers saw stone become the protagonist of a miracle: it shed its natural heaviness, its imposing consist-ency was turned into lightness, harmony and enchantment.

Progetto PietraIl progetto “Pietra: antichi e nuovi percorsi della pie-tra trentina” ha voluto stimolare una ricerca artistica e allo stesso tempo promuovere la pietra trentina. Il tema del progetto durato due anni, è stato sviluppato da giovani artisti dell’Istituto Europeo di Design di Mi-lano, da giovani designer del network europeo Cumulus e da quattro affermati architetti: Mario Botta, Pier Luigi Cerri, Alessandro Guerriero ed Ettore Sottsass jr. Oltre al granito dell’Adamello, sono state utilizzate altre pie-tre trentine quali la pietra rosa di Terlago, il Verdello di Trento e il porfido della Val di Cembra. Una sfida esaltante: trasformare una materia dura, ostica come la pietra in materiale di raffinati oggetti di design e di strutture essenziali e antiche come le fontane.

A occuparsi della Tonalite è stato Ettore Sottsass jr, che ha reinterpretato l’antica fontana di montagna, quella ricavata da un tronco scavato dove gli anima-li andavano a bere: una fontana lunga e stretta, una piccola scultura. Ettore Sottsass jr: “L’idea di non abbandonare questa memoria mi è stata suggerita dal fatto di avere a disposizione un bellissimo granito che si chiama granito dell’Adamello, cioè avevo a dispo-sizione una pietra che viene dalle alte montagne del Trentino”. I progetti sono stati esposti al Mart, Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto e durante il salone del Mobile presso la Fondazione Pietro Portalupi a Milano.

Progetto Pietra

The project “Stone: ancient and new courses for Trentino Stone” aimed to stimulate artistic research and, at the same time, promote Trentino Stone. The central theme of the project lasting two years was developed by the young artists of the European Design Institute in Milan, young designers involved in the European Cumulus network and four famous architects: Mario Botta, Pier Luigi Cerri, Alessandro Guerriero and Ettore Sottsass jr. Adamello granite was joined by other Trentino stone materials - such as Terlago pink stone, Trento Verdello and Val di Cembra porphyry. An exciting challenge: turn a hard and obstinate material, such as stone, into a material for elegant design objects and structures as essential and ancient as fountains. Ettore Sottsass jr. worked with tonalite in his re-interpretation of ancient mountain fountains where animals drank made from hollowed out tree trunks: a long and narrow fountain, a tiny sculpture. Ettore Sottsass jr: “The idea of retaining this memory was suggested by the availability of a superb material - Adamello granite - that ensured I could work with a stone from the high mountains of the Trentino region”. The projects were exhibited at Mart - the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento & Rovereto, as well as during the Furniture Show at the Pietro Portalupi Foundation in Milan.

Opere in pietra Perchè il tempo non cancelli la memoria: è questo lo scopo che si ottiene quando si decide di fare un monu-mento. La Tonalite estratta dall’Adamello, monumento naturale a perenne ricordo dei caduti della Grande Guerra, è il granito che più di altri si presta a questa funzione: ricordare, celebrare, onorare. Il granito, bianco e nero o colorato, risulta l’accostamento ideale con altre pietre naturali, il legno, l’acciaio, il vetro, per valorizzare ed impreziosire grandi piccole strutture.
