DISEASE SITUATION
• Disease situation in Landstate
• Landstate is country situated in Western Balkans. It has big capacity in aquaculture production, and big resources of fresh water.
• Main species produced are trout and carp, but tench and pike are also produced although in small amounts.
• In Landstate there is 45 fresh water farms registered. 20 of them are producing cold water fish and are situtated in mountains, and 25 farms are mainly producing cyprinid fish. Big number of ”catch and release” and ”put and take” fisheries are present, but still they are not registered. Wild waters are operated by local associations which mainly restock wild waters from registered farms.
• As regards diseases, presence od KHV and SVC has never been noted/reported in theese areas.
• As regards cold water fish, IPN is present on over 75 % of registered farms (it causes mortalities only on fish fry/juveniles). There is no data on presence of IPNV on wild populations as they were never tested.
• VHS/IHN are never reported in Landstate, and all farms are considered as disease free, according to results from multiannual surveillance programme.
DISEASE SITUATION
FARM INFORMATION• Region Western Hills is situated in mainland of Landstate. It is
situated on mountain area with lots of springs, and one major river named Black river. Due to fact, that a large amount of fresh water is available through whole year it is common to breed trout in this area. Two farms are present and operating, first named Big Trout, located on spring of Black river, and second one located downstream, named Sport Trout. Black river have one large tributarie called White River, after which flows into large lake called Mountain Lake. Mountain Lake is famous for recreational fishing and is very dens turist area. Also, it is uniqe for its Great Mountain Lake Damn, used for production of electricity.
• On White River, four trout farms are currently present, three farms are producing fish and one farm is currently closed. Largest farm is Trout&Trout, situated on spring of White river, afterwards, there is non operational farm called Trout Company, two fully operational called White Trout Farm and Fish Site.
Day 1 – Exercise 1
• Exercise 1: Increased mortalities on trout farm named Big Trout situated on Black river
• On April 21, farmer has reported unexplained increased mortalities of trouts in past week. He had tried with antmicrobial treatment, but after no results, decided to alert the authorities. He phoned local authorized veterinarian and informed him on event.
• Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, FYROM• Please describe all activities that should be conducted by competent
authority, and also shortly describe:• Animal health policy in your country (in relation to presence of listed
disease)• Disease outbreak managment• Financial aspect of disease control/private – government funds• Capacity in stuff, equipment, disinfectants
Day 2 – Field trip 1
• Exercise 2: Suspicion on farm Big Trout situated on Black river
• The audience is divided in 4 groups (red, green, yellow and blue).
• Group tasks: • To apply measures on farm (red group)• Clinical examination of fish (green group)• Sampling (yellow group)• Diagnostic methods used (blue group)
Day 2 – Field trip 1
• Exercise 3: Confirmed case of listed disease on farm Big Trout situated on Black river
• Group tasks:
• Disease control on the farm (red group)
• Disease control in zone (yellow group)
• Epidemiology investigation (green group)
• Disease reporting (blue group)
Day 3 – field trip 2
• Exercise 4: Confirmed case of listed disease on farm Big Trout situated on Black river
• Group tasks: • Eradication plan (financial aspect) (red group)• Fish disposal/disinfection (yellow group)• Legislation and databases/public relations
(green group)• Restocking/ragaining the disease free status
(blue group)
Day 3 – field trip 2• Exercise 5: Movement of live fish in zone• Group tasks: In order to finalize this exercise, surveillance zone and
protection zone should be known.• Red group: • Describe all possible movements of live fish and fish products from Sport
Trout farm.• Owner of Sport Trout farm would like to get some friends to come fishing on
his farm, they would also like to take some fish with them. Is it allowed?• Green group:• Owner of Big Trout farm would like to sell some fish for restocking of Black
River? Would you give him permission. Explain!• Owner of Trout Company would like to open his farm and restock it with
fish. What would you advise him?• Yellow group:• Owner of Sport Trout would like to accompany some tourists and offer
them some of his fish which he would prepare on site. Is it allowed?• Blue group:• Owner of White trout farm would like to sell some live fish to owner of Big
Trout. Explain conditions, would you allow such movement?
Day 3 – field trip 2
• Exercise 6: Hypothesis of source of infection• Group tasks: Each group should describe at
least three possible hypothesis of soruce of infection and rate them as unliekly, likely, most likely.
• Hypothesis exercise should be last group exercise, after all groups have finished their group work and briefly presented their findings and conclusions to others.
