The DeBow Freed Awards for Outstanding Leadership represents the highest level of recognition of excellence in student leadership at Ohio Northern University. This marks the eighteenth year for the President’s Leadership Dessert and is the event where these prestigious awards are announced. A DeBow Freed Award for Outstanding Leadership as a student is presented to one male and one female representative in the following categories: First Year, Second Year, Third Year, and Fourth Year. The process implemented for selection of the recipients of these awards begins by nominations to the Selection Committee. Nominations are reviewed and recipients selected by a committee of administrators, undergraduate faculty and students. Criteria for selection include: evidence of personal impact as a result of the candidate’s leadership on the ONU campus, campus community and/or community of residence, sound character plus good social and academic standing. “True leaders have the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. Leaders do not set out to be leaders, but become leaders by the quality of their actions and the integrity of their interest. In the end, leaders are much like eagles...they don’t flock; you find them one at a time.”
