Welcome to 4-H! We hope you are enjoyed a wonderful summer and hope you are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new 4-H year. We are delighted that you are part of our amazing 4-H learning community. We welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your family in completing 4-H projects and activities. All signs point to another incredible and productive 4-H year. Our skilled and devoted staff and volunteers are already planning and preparing for the upcoming 4-H year by offering exciting events and programs. 4-H is part of a caring community with the common goal of nurturing responsible, caring 4-H members and promoting high-level learning. 4-H Clubs will soon be organizing for the 2019-2020 year. There are many different project clubs, leadership activities, communication events, livestock, horse, foods, horticulture, sewing, workshops, camps, robots, just to name a few of the exciting 4-H learning opportunities that you can be a part of. 4-H COMMUNITY CLUB ATTENDANCE SIGNING UP FOR MONTHLY MEETINGS- Watch for announcements in the newsletter and the 4-H Facebook page on when clubs and project groups will organize. Youth must register to attend 4-H Foods, Horse, Livestock, Horticulture, Sewing, Shooting Sports, Cloverbud, and Teen Clubs/groups. Due the high cost of supplies provided at some club meetings, it will be required that youth call the Extension office and sign up for the meetings. Supplies – food, etc. may not be available to those that fail to sign up for club/group meetings each month. 4-H WORKSHOP – 4-H Workshops are usually held at least once monthly. Watch newsletter for what is being made, cost and time. Due to the high cost of workshop supplies, all 4-H workshops must be pre-paid before a kit/supplies will be ordered or prepared for participants. Participants may pay for 4-H workshops at the Extension Office located at 1337 Clay St. in Hartford. Workshop registration will not be accepted by phone. 4-H CLASSROOM CLUB OFFICERS – Classroom club officers will be elected during the month of October. Community club elections will be determined by the volunteer leader. Any student that would like to be elected to a School 4-H Classroom Club officer position are required to present a fifteen second speech on why they would like to be a 4-H officer. School 4-H Classroom Clubs will elect the following club officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Reporter, Parliamentarian, and 3 Recreation Leaders. THE 2019 OHIO COUNTY FAIR will be Thursday, September 19-Saturday, September 21 at the Ohio County Park. 4-H members can enter projects at the County Fair on Tuesday, September 17 from 3:00-7:00 pm. This includes projects completed at home, 4-H Workshops, 4-H Camp, 4-H Day Camp, Sewing Club, Foods Club, and 2019 4-H Posters. 4-H projects do not have to be completed at the 4-H Office to be eligible for entry to the Ohio County Fair. A complete listing of Ohio County Fair 4-H Divisions will be available on line at http://ces.ca.uky.edu.ohio/youth/.

2019 KY STATE FAIR CLOVERVILLE –The following youth received ribbons for their 4-H project entries in 4-H Cloverville: Matthew Bown – Crops; McKenzie Brown – Clothing; Gracie Chinn – Arts & Crafts; Satori Greer – Arts and Crafts; Carlie Hansen Foods, Home Environment and Leadership & Communication Project; Emma Hansen – Woodworking, Sewing and Foods; Kayla Mohon – Arts and Crafts and Sewing; Kristen Mohon - Arts and Crafts and Sewing Carlie; Emily Sisk – Photography; Emily Smiley – Arts and Crafts and Trends; and Merideth Smith – Woodworking, Arts and Crafts, Photography and Trends. Satori Greer was a Arts & Crafts class 733a champion for her drawing. Carlie Hansen received a class champion ribbon for her personal resume in the Leadership and Communication project.

What: Pumpkin Workshop When: September 30; 3:30-5:00 Cost: $5.00 - includes all supplies. Participants must pre-pay workshop fee for a kit to be ordered. Registration Deadline: September 23. Participants must pre-pay the $5.00 workshop fee at the Extension Office in Hartford. Class size is limited to 30. If you register and must cancel, please do so within 2 days of the workshop. CUPCAKE WARS What is 4-H Cupcake War? A fun event that showcases

creativity and design skills of 4-H youth. Who: A team of one to two 4-H members. Youth ages 9-18. Ohio County 4-H member ages 9-18 (this includes school and community 4-H clubs). Cost: Gate admission to Fair (4-H Youth Participants that register with Extension office will be allowed to enter the fair at no cost. This fair pass does not include rides, a separate ticket must be purchased. Date: Friday, September 19, 6:00 pm. Teams must check-in 30 minutes prior to contest (5:30 pm) What will the 4-H Design Chefs do? Each team of 1-2 youth will receive two cupcakes provided by contest organizers to decorate. Each team must bring all supplies (icing, decorations, props, table decorations, table cloth, etc.) to decorate the provided two cupcakes. Additional cupcakes are not allowed to be used in the presentation. Any decorating media is allowed. A table top design area will be provided that measures 36 inches x 30 inches. Individuals/teams will have 30 minutes to incorporate the provided two cupcakes into a design of their choice. The provided two cupcakes must be included in the finished presentation. Only participants can set up display or decorate cupcakes before and during competition. All judge’s decisions are final. Awards: Grand Champion - $20 cash & Trophy, Reserve Champion - $15 & Trophy, Best Display - $10 & Trophy, Most Original - $10 & Trophy, Best Design Skills - $10 & Trophy. All participants will receive ribbons/premium based on the Danish System. Registration: Individuals or Teams must register by calling the Ohio County Extension Office at (270) 298-7441. Deadline to Register: Wednesday, September 18 by 4:00 pm.

4-H PROJECT SHEETS –Due Oct. 18 Youth that complete and turn in a 4-H Project Sheet with a 1 page story attached, will be recognized at the 4-H Achievement Banquet on November 15. 4-H Project Sheets are available at the Extension Office in Hartford. 4-H Youth Members completing and submitting two 4-H

Project Sheets will receive one point toward the 2020 4-H Awards Program. 2019 4-H ACHIEVEMENT BANQUET – The 2019 4-H Achievement Banquet will be held on November, 15, 2019. The banquet will honor 4-H Youth for their participation in 4-H activities that include 4-H Medals, 4-H Record Sheets, KY 4-H Honors, 4-H Record Forms, Judging Teams, Hippology, Skill-A-Thons, County Speech/Demonstration Champions, Livestock/ Horse Shows, Camp Leaders and Adult Volunteer recognition. A letter will be sent in October to 4-H volunteers and eligible youth with information about the banquet. 4-H CLOVERBUD CLUB is a pre-4-H age club that teaches youth about 4-H and life skills. Ohio County offers 4-H Cloverbud activities for youth ages 5-8. Meeting will be September 26th from 3:30-4:30pm. For more information contact the Extension office at (270) 298-7441.

Join!! THE OHIO COUNTY 4-H

HORSE CLUB will meet on Monday, September 23 at the Ohio County Extension Office at 6:00 pm. Activities include: Club Meetings, Education, Horse Judging, Speeches,

Demonstrations, Fun Shows, Horse Shows, etc. The 4-H Horse Club does not provide horses for anyone to ride or show. For more information contact the Extension Office at (270) 298-7441. Join!! THE 4-H CHEFS CLUB teaches youth about cooking and nutrition. The youth will learn how to follow a recipe, how to measure correctly, how to make various nutritional foods. The 4-H Foods Club will meet on Monday, September 23 from 3:30-5:00 pm at the Extension Office in Hartford. PARTICIPANTS MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THE MEETING!! To register call (270) 298-7441.

Join!! THE 4-H HORTICULTURE CLUB will meet on Wednesday, October 2 from 3:30-4:30 pm at the Extension Office. The Horticulture Club learns about flowers/house plants, ornamental plants, vegetables, and fruits and nuts.

Join!! THE 4-H TEEN CLUB will meet on Tuesday, September 10 from 3:30-4:30 at the Extension Office in Hartford. The 4-H Teen club is for youth in grades 7-12. Teens develop leadership skills, practice community service and life skills. *Meeting will be held at the bottom of the hill* 4-H ROBOTICS – BUILDING THE FUTURE

VOLUNTEER NEEDED Ohio County 4-H has received a grant from TVA to develop a 4-H robotics program utilizing the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robots. A volunteer leader is needed that has an interest in robotics This 4-H program provides hands-on engineering and technical skills for youth. 4-H Robotics can help provide these skills in a fun and meaningful way.

Requirements for Robotics Volunteer Leader:

• Submit for a background and reference check to be accepted as a 4-H leader.

• Attend 4-H Robotics – Building the Future In-service on 10/22/2019 at Christian County Extension Office in Hopkinsville. All In-service fees paid by Ohio County 4-H/Extension Service. This in-service will concentrate more on the application of the latest LEGO Mindstorm EV3 and other robotics platforms and how to incorporate it with the current 4-H Robotics curriculum. We will also be looking at how to take classroom and club learning to the next level by establishing 4-H Robotics teams for competitive events and strategies for cross curriculum programming.

2018-2019 4-H MEDAL AWARD FORM – Due Oct. 18

Ohio County 4-H awards youth for participation in various 4-H events and activities with 3 Medal levels: Bronze - Silver - Gold. 4-H medals are for 4-H

activities and events that have been completed from Sept. 1, 2018 through Aug. 31, 2019. Medal Requirements: Bronze - 5 activities; Silver - 10 activities; Gold - 15 activities. 4-H Medal Forms will be available at 4-H Club meetings and the

Extension Office. Please submit the 4-H Medal form by October 18 at your club meeting or to the

Extension Office located at 1337 Clay Street, Hartford. 4-H Medal Forms can be mailed to Ohio County 4-H P.O. Box 66 Hartford, KY 42347. 4-H medals will be awarded at the 2018 4-H Achievement Banquet in November.

4-H POSTER CONTEST The 4-H Poster Contest will be held during the month of October. 4-H members will receive rules and free poster board at their 4-H School (grades 4-6) and 4-H Community Clubs. Posters must be submitted by Wednesday, October 23. School Club member's posters will be collected at school. Community Club or home school members can be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline.

2019 4-H POSTER CONTEST RULES * 4-H Poster may be completed at school or at home. * Parents or others may help with the design, but poster should be completed by 4-H member. * Poster must be on poster board ONLY – Poster Size 14”x11”. * One piece of white poster board will be supplied FREE by 4-H. * The poster must have a 4-H Theme incorporated into the design. *The 4-H Clover or the words “4-H” must be on the poster. * You may draw or use clip art/stencils in the design of your poster. * You may use crayons, markers, paint, and/or colored pencils, etc. * Stick on letters, clip art, etc. may be glued onto your poster. *4-H members full name, teacher, grade and school/club should be printed neatly on back of the poster. Name should not be on front of poster. ITEMS NOT ALLOWED – (Ineligible for Champion consideration) * Glitter of any kind is not allowed (pen, loose glitter or glitter stickers). * Poster cannot be 3-D. Items on poster can be no higher than 1/8". * Decorations/designs cannot hang over the edge of the poster board. * Is on the wrong size/type poster board. * Does not have full name on the poster. * Messy, folded or rolled up. * NO COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL of any type is allowed:

- Sports Teams – College or Professional, etc. - Nascar – No Drivers or Sponsors names, etc. - Product Names – Nike, Pepsi, M&M, etc. - Cartoon Characters – Sponge Bob, Bugs Bunny, etc.

- Singers/Actors/Movies – Pirates of Caribbean, Shrek, etc.

AWARDS – Judging will take place by grades. * Each 4-H member will receive a 4-H ribbon (blue/red/green) * Each classroom will have a room champion (Purple rosette ribbon). * Each school will have a school champion for 4th 5th, and 6th grades that will receive a trophy. *One County Champion will be selected for each grade level from all School champions. A trophy will be awarded to each of the County Champions in 4th, 5th, 6th grades. Home school youth (4th-6th) and Teens will be placed in separate county groups. A trophy will be awarded to each group DEADLINE: 4-H POSTERS ARE DUE AT THE OCTOBER 4-H CLUB MEETING OR TO EXTENSION OFFICE BY OCTOBER 23.

Who can join 4-H? As with all Cooperative Extension programs, 4-H is open to all youth, regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.

• Age: Any young person ages 9 through 18 may be involved in Ohio County 4-H. Ohio County offers 4-H Clover Bud activities for youth ages 5-8. .

• Participation: In Ohio County there are several ways youth can participate in 4-H.

• Organized Clubs are an organized group of youth who meet throughout the year and elect officers. The two types of 4-H Clubs that usually meet in Ohio County are: a) "school clubs" which meet during school hours; and b) "community or project clubs" which meet at times when kids are not in school.

• Special Interest/Short Term programs--group of youth who participate in a series of learning experiences on a topic of special interest to them such as a sewing group or robotics group.

• Camp--group of youth participate in overnight or day camp. • School Enrichment--classrooms of youth who participate in 4-H as

part of the school curriculum (Youth Ag Days 4th grade, Body Walk 7th grade)

• Individual Study--individual youth who participate in 4-H as a family but do not affiliate with a 4-H club or group.

Last month, our Junior and Senior Horticulture Teams competed at the Kentucky State Fair.

Our Junior team named Grand Champion. Team members on the junior team were Helder Tejeda, Emi Mohon, Emily Smiley and Emma Hansen. Emi

Mohon was named the Junior Reserve Grand Champion Individual.

The Senior Horticulture Team also competed at the Kentucky State Fair. Those competing were: Laura Smiley, Meegan Lane, Gracie

Chinn, Carlie Hansen, Kristin Mohon, Kayla Mohon, Merideth Smith and Madison Kircher. Carlie Hansen was named the Senior Reserve Grand Champion Individual. 2019 4-H TEAM CHALLENGE CAMP The first annual 4-H Team Challenge was held at the West KY 4-H Camp on September 19. Teams from Breckinridge, Hancock, Henderson, Ohio and Webster Counties competed for the traveling trophy. Teams were required to complete various leadership challenges during the day. The Ohio County Team consisting of Petey Graham, Paisley Patterson, Gavin Peech and Emily Smiley stormed to victory to claim the traveling trophy and first place medals.

4-H Fashion Revue Our sewing club members participated in the Ohio County 4-H Fashion Revue on Friday, August 9th. This year’s theme was “Fall in Love with 4-H Fashion” Sewing Club members Emma Hansen, Kyleigh Lindsey, Rylie Ball, Helder Tejeda, Emi Mohon, Julia Sumner, Jayce Wallace, Khloe Coffman, Mckenzie Brown, Mary Stone, Meegan Lane, Carlie Hansen, Laura Smiley, Kristen Mohon, Gracie Chinn, Kayla Mohon and Merideth Smith all participated! In construction, everyone received blue. Unit 1 Laundry Bag reserve champion was Kyleigh Lindsey, Champion was Emma Hansen. Unit 1 Go Green bag, reserve champion was Khloe Coffman, champion was Emi Mohon. Unit 1 Clothing Mary Stone was reserve champion and Mckenzie Brown was champion. Senior Let’s Get Casual reserve champion was Carlie Hansen and champion was Kristen Mohon. Senior Dress it Up reserve champion was Merideth Smith. Champion was Kayla Mohon. Modeling Results: Unit 1 Laundry Bag; Kyleigh Lindsey was reserve champion, Emma Hansen was champion. Unit 1 Go Green Bag reserve champion was Emi Mohon and champion was Khloe Coffman.
