Steady 6.6% Growth Seen From a report by Lawrence Agcaoili The Philippine Star, May 14, 2017

MANILA, Philippines - Investment bank Credit Suisse said the country’s economy expanded at a sustained pace of 6.6 percent in the first quarter of the year despite slower domestic demand.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia earlier said the country’s domestic output as measured by the GDP likely grew seven percent, the mid-range of the 6.5 to 7.5 percent growth target penned by economic managers for 2017.

Credit Suisse economist Michael Wan said fixed investment activity slowed down from robust levels of around 19 percent in line with the moderation in capital goods imports to 11 percent from 26 percent in the fourth quarter.

He added government spending was also off to a slow start this year with public infrastructure spending moderating to 14 percent from a robust 43 percent in the fourth quarter.

He also reported merchandise exports picked up 17 percent in the first quarter of the year driven by the rise in electronics shipments as well as textiles, machinery and transport.

“Strong exports should offset moderation in domestic demand,” he said.

Wan said export growth would moderate to mid-single digits for the rest of the year from mid-teens in line with the outlook for the rest of the Asia Pacific region.

Credit Suisse sees the country’s GDP growth easing to 6.4 percent this year after accelerating to 6.9 percent last year from 5.9 percent in 2015 amid robust do- mestic demand and higher investments.

Romeo Vasquez:

Asia’s Best Actor

REMEMBER WHEN?

From the collection of Danny Dolor The Philippine Star, May 14, 2017

In the mid-’50s and early ’60s, Romeo Vasquez was known in Sampaguita Pictures as Lover Boy and Pretty Boy on and off camera, a lovable if naughty boy, the favorite of the studio matriarch, Doña Hon- rado Vera, fondly called Mommy Vera.

But he was more than a handsome face. Bobby (Ricardo Alandy Sumilang in real life, of Tayabas, Quezon) was Asia’s Best Actor at the 1958 Asian Film Festival held in Manila. He won for Ako ang Maysala!, directed by Armando Garces and produced by Sampaguita’s sister company, Vera Perez Productions. Amalia Fuentes was his leading lady.

Bobby left behind memorable Sampaguita movies, including the star-studded Sino ang Maysala? and the acclaimed Mga Ligaw na Bulaklak, both opposite Susan Roces.

The Romeo-Amalia onscreen loveteam ended in marriage... and eventual separation. They have a daughter, Liezl Martinez, whose death devastated Bobby. It is said that Bobby never recovered from the death of Liezl until he succumbed to liver cancer last May 2.

Benham Rise is now Philippine Rise, and a protected food supply zone – Piñol By Eimor P. Santos, CNN Philippines - Fri, May 12, 2017

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 12) — The government asserts the country's sovereign rights over Benham Rise by renaming it "Philippine Rise."

Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, the highest-ranking government official so far to visit the area, on Thursday said President Rodrigo Duterte had approved the name change in a Cabinet meeting on May 8.

Philippine Rise is a 13-million hectare undersea plateau that lies 216 km (135 miles) east of coast of Aurora province. The territory is wider than the island of Luzon.

Duterte has designated the area as a "protected food supply exclusive zone," Piñol said. Mining and oil exploration activities are prohibited in Philippine Rise, which is believed to be rich in natural gas, oil, and minerals.

Filipino fishermen who travel around 20 hours from Infanta, Quezon to Philippine Rise catch big fish like yellowfin tuna which can earn them as much as ₱15,000 (US$ 300) in the market.

Piñol said Duterte had also given the go signal for the construction of a research facility and a command post at Benham Bank – the shallowest portion of Philippine Rise. A command post would also deter illegal fishing on the grounds, he added.

During Piñol's visit, the government set up 15 fishing devices called a "payao" to help local fishermen who use only wooden boats with no radar or fish tracking devices. Each payao costs P200,000. The device is attached to an orange buoy with branches of palm trees, which attract fish.

Malacañang first bared plans to rename Benham Rise in April, after Chinese survey ships were spotted in the territory in March. China has admitted its ship was in an area east of the country but only on innocent passage, saying it recognizes the Philippines' sovereign rights there.

Duterte in a speech last April said he wanted to "officially claim [Benham Rise] as ours" by renaming it.

The United Nations ruled in 2012 that the undersea plateau is part of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. This means the country has the sole right to its resources.
