Oh, the Places WE Will GO!
Did you know that around the 1850’s Political Cartooning aided in the take down of a mafia boss that was literally stealing New York City? Or that Caricature art is the most identifiable and well known art form in the world? How about that our beloved Dr. Seuss created WWII propaganda that was EXAGGERATED and full of racial slander? AND without caricature art we wouldn't have the drawing of the modern day Santa Clause! Caricature art is SO much more than just a drawing of a person made to look funny. Caricaturist use symbolism and exaggeration to distort a persons most prominent features to connect the artist’s point of view to his/her audience. The rich, famous, powerful, and criminal have all been targeted by caricaturist and political cartoonist with all sorts of agendas. So the next time you are at a carnival or school fair and see a caricaturist creating art, think about how that portrait may INTERACT with our world!!

Why Caricature?
Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Spengeman chose to explore caricature because
they wanted to know how this single type
of art form is capable of creating
joy, persuading others beliefs across nations, and creating
history!! Using caricature and
political cartoons, history and art have interacted to literally
change destiny. Your teachers want
you to learn how you can use your gift in
art, math, science, or any other field to
create purpose and persuasion!
Plus they are really cool and funny too!! Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Spengeman learned so much about this art form and they look forward to
sharing all that they learned with YOU!

What Caricature Can Teach Us About Facial Recognition?
Did you know that with in 100 milliseconds a person is able to recognize a face? Or that hours after birth a baby is drawn to a face? It is believed by Neuroscientists that the human brain has a specific area dedicated to facial recognition called fusiform gyrus which is located in the temporal lobe. Much of this research is studio through the art of caricature. Think about it…caricaturist are able to draw a few distinctive lines of a well known person’s face and people are able to quickly identify who it is. Caricature art is closing the gap from science fiction to the real world in the realm of facial recognition. Could you imagine walking down the road and
security cameras being able to follow each person and identify him or her with facial recognition software? Consider how this might eliminate crime or evade our privacy!! Well those times are coming and part in thanks to caricaturist who are lending scientist their brains. Scientists are studying how these artists’ brains are able to compute the human face into these cartoon like drawings we are all familiar with. Stephen Silver, a caricaturist that began 20 years ago at Sea World and is now a character designer for animation studios says, “If they used caricatures for police composites today,” Silver says, “people would be like, ‘What is this, a joke?’ But the cops would catch the guy.” Check out our website to read more on this article at http://www.wired.com/2011/07/ff_caricature/all/ to find out what scientist studies have found and how caricatures bring faces to life!

Beyond the Classroom
• People Watch- Sit at a public place and practice sketching the FIVE main shapes of the FACE. LOOK DEEPER and incorporate your ideas of who they are and how they INTERACT with our society. !
• READ THE NEWSPAPER- WHAT?? Check out the political cartoons in your local newspaper and determine the meaning. What symbolism, EXAGGERATION, and irony do you see? Create your own political cartoon and submit it to your local paper!
FAMILY CORNER When students are reading we ask them to do
what? VISUALIZE! Using caricature drawings
children are able to sharpen an area of their brain
that is responsible for thinking creatively and then
can later activate it during activities like reading.
Allowing students to think creatively and
STRETCH their brain will show our children what
they are capable of!! This week students will
create self-caricatures while thinking about how
our INTERACTIONS with art and society impact
our world!
“A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT CARICATURE IS ABOUT PICKING OUT SOMEONE’S WORST FEATURE AND EXAGGERATING IT AS FAR AS YOU CAN. THAT’S WRONG. CARICATURE IS
FINDING THE TRUTH.” ~Stephen Silver
Scan this, using a QR scanner to visit our web page!! Students work and other updates can be seen here!!!
• Consider the quote above and think about the meaning behind these words. What does Silver mean when he says caricature is, “finding the truth”? How can understanding this help you to become a better CARICATURIST? !
• Try adding color and bodies to your caricature drawings. Check out the BOOK CORNER for great resources to help guide you!
