Writing Requirements

• Introduction:– Background information

• Hooks your reader• Functions as the “shallow end”

– Thesis statement• Tells your reader exactly what you’re going to talk about

– DO NOT SAY “I will write about” or “this essay is about”

– Blueprint• List exactly what you will be discussing (each of your body

paragraphs)

• Body Paragraphs:– Topic sentence should begin each paragraph

• Should contain transitions (first, another, finally)• Should clearly state what you will be discussing in the

paragraph

– Each topic sentence should be followed by some sort of explanation

• Could be an example

– Each paragraph should end by restating the main idea of the paragraph

• Sort of functions as the bottom bun—why is this important

• Conclusion:– You still need a topic sentence

• Must include a transition! Can be the restatement of thesis and main points

– Restate your thesis and main points– End with a call to action or decisive statement
