Principal Visits

Debating 2016

The OGPS debating team has been working very hard over terms 2 and 3 to prepare and present six debates against other local schools.

We have debated topics such as “That everyone should have a Facebook page”, “That the Olympics are a waste of money” and “That celebrities are good role models”.

The round of debates is now complete, with the OGPS debating team winning four of their six debates; a great effort.

The team consisted of Stage 3 students: Zeenat Rezak, Shaymaa Abdul Hamid, Zain El- Masri, Say Htoo, Nabil Hussein, Omar Serhan, Ghadir Habib and Leila Safrglani. These students dedicated many hours to discussing, researching, writing and delivering our side of each debate & are to be commended on their hard work and for being wonderful representatives of OGPS in our district.

Road Safety Tips

Please remember that children are inexperienced road users and that it’s important they are supervised in the traffic environment. Please remember to –

• hold your child’s hand while crossing the road • always buckle up in your seatbelt and follow the child restraint laws for 0-7 years • help your children exit the car using the rear passenger door on the footpath side.

Our final need for the garden is to have an irrigation system installed in 2017 to help with watering as hand watering is too time consuming.

Garden Bee News- Our 20th Bee

Out lovely chooks are laying about three eggs daily, much to our delight and good use in the kitchen. They are getting bigger and highly creative in finding ways to get inside the vegie beds despite of our best efforts to keep them out by using fine nets. The chooks are friendly and run to the students when they hear them entering the garden, expecting some tasty treats. One of the chooks is a definite ring leader, called "Safari” as she is always looking for exciting adventures or escapes.

The garden renovations, begun in 2015, have been finalised with more than 30 timber beds built to grow vegies, herbs and fruit. A small Indigenous section was recently added as well as ‘dust bath’ for the chooks’ daily cleaning needs. The old pallet compost was demolished, paving way to a new brick bay.

Since beginning our Kitchen Garden Project, in July 2011, we have held 20 garden bees to build our organic vegie patch. Many staff members and their families, with the school’s students and parents have worked hard to build the amazing garden! We are indebted to imc, our main sponsor, whose staff have voluntarily worked alongside us over many bees in the last five years, while also providing huge financial support - what a fantastic partnership!

Lansdowne Zone Athletics Carnival

On Monday 22nd August 39 students from Old Guildford Public School participated in the annual Lansdowne Zone athletics carnival which was held at the Bankstown Crest Athletics track.

The weather was cold and wet but our students braved the elements and did Old Guildford proud.

Due to the lengthy program all track events were timed and the fastest times in each heat were used to select the Lansdowne Zone Athletics track team. Students representing the Lansdowne Zone will compete in the SSW Athletics Championship which will take place on Wednesday 14th September at the Campbelltown Athletics Centre.

Nine students from our school have been chosen to represent the Lansdowne Zone. They are as follows: Abed Issa- Junior 800m, Adam Hussein- 12/13yrs -800m, Hannan El Hawat-11yrs girls 100m,200m and Long jump, Issra Amine-11yrs girls 100m and 200m, Modesty Tafeuni- 9yrs girls 100m and the Junior Relay team-(Mereana Pagaspas, Sarah Abas, Mariam Issa and Aisha Hussein).

Congratulations to the above students. We wish them well in their endeavour to compete at state level.

Enrolment in 2017

Kindergarten places are now being allocated to students for 2017. If you have a child who will be attending kindergarten in 2017 please collect an application form from the office. You can confidently recommend our kinder program to neighbours with children who will be starting school next year. Those who have already enrolled will receive a letter early next term with details about the Kindergarten Orientation. This transition into BIG school is very important for the children to attend.

Research clearly shows that students who attend preschool are more likely to succeed at school. Places for our preschool in 2017 will be allocated next term and are in very high demand. If you have a child or know of a child who will need a position in our preschool in 2017 you should contact the office as soon as possible.

Congratulations 4S this terms library class of the term

winners!

It has been another busy term in the library.

Students from kindergarten to year 6 have been reading this year’s Australian Children’s Book Council shortlisted books. This year’s Book Week theme was Australia Story Country and students were able to read a wide variety of books written by authors from every part of Australia.

Our Book Character Parade was a great success. Thank you to all the parents, families and caregivers who attended the event. The costumes were amazing!

Prior to our Book Character parade a Book Fair was held in the library. Thank you to all families that supported this event. Due to your support we were able to raise over $700 that will be used to purchase new books for the library.

Once again it has been pleasing to see so many students borrowing regularly as well as using our new library system, Oliver, for searching and reserving their favourite books. In term 4 students will begin posting their own book reviews to the Oliver system.

K-2 Playground

Once again, we have been successful in receiving a grant organised through Fairfield City Council & funded by Fairfield RSL to continue developing our community playspace.

Fairfield RSL have very generously agreed to fund $22,500 for the addition of some wooden balance/walking beams & seating platforms, a dry creek bed, which will incorporate the bridge we already have, a jetty near the boat & some landscaping to beautify the area. This will extend from the boat, behind the lunch seats across to the slide.

We would like to acknowledge & thank Fairfield RSL for their continuous support of the OGPS Community Playspace project.

We have also added a large sandpit to the playground which the children will begin using soon.

All the equipment in the playground is available for use however, if preschool children are playing on or using equipment while waiting for siblings or after school, they MUST be closely supervised by an adult. Equipment must also remain where it belongs or returned to where it should be. Nothing should be left on the grass.

Thank you, Mrs S.Scerri

Tips for parents

1. When your child wants to show you something, stop what you are doing and pay attention to your child. It is important to spend frequent, small amounts of time with your child doing things that you both enjoy.

2. Talk to your child about things he/she is interested in and share aspects of your day with your child.

3. Set clear limits on your child’s behaviour. Sit down and discuss the rules in the home. Let your child know what the consequences will be if they break the rules.

4. Look after yourself. It is difficult to be a calm, relaxed parent if you are stressed, anxious or depressed. Try to find time every week to let yourself unwind or do something that you enjoy.

LADYBUGS and BUTTERFLIES Preschool

Book Parade and Teddy Bear’s Picnic

The preschool teachers are constantly being reminded how much the children like engaging in dramatic and imaginative play experiences. They enjoy dressing up and it is great to see the children exploring different identities and points of view through dramatic play. It is wonderful to see the children engaging in enjoyable interactions with their friends using verbal and non-verbal communication to express their ideas and emotions.

The ‘Book Parade’ and ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ was certainly a fun and successful learning experience.

Australia’s International Film Festival for Kids

LITTLE BIG SHOTS 2016

On the 4th of August, Stage 2 went on an

excursion to the Opera House to watch ‘Little Big Shots’. It is an international film festival showcasing child-produced films including Australian and international children's features, shorts, animations and documentary films. ‘Little Big Shots’ festival provides extensive opportunities for students to explore the power of films and to examine the components of film making. Students investigated how the filmmaker used the camera, lighting, types of actors (live or animated), costumes, props, sound or other interesting aspects prior to the excursion. After the Little Big Shots festival students discussed techniques used by the filmmakers to make their favourite films. It was a highly entertaining and engaging film festival to watch. What an amazing, fun experience for all Stage 2 students.

In Week 10 of Term 2, Stage 3 had the wonderful opportunity to watch a stage production of “The Little Prince” in Riverside Theatre, Parramatta. The production was put on by two members of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre. “The Little Prince” is best described as ‘a book for children written for grown-ups’’. It is a classic and thought-provoking tale adapted from the French original. The story explores the theme of childhood innocence and how this dissolves as we grow older.

Having read the story in class already everyone was excited to see it on stage and we were not disappointed. The props and puppets used were excellent and really added to the atmosphere of the production. Afterwards we were allowed to ask some questions about the production. We learned a lot from the puppeteers and judging by the fantastic questions being asked we may even have some future puppeteers in our midst!

We then walked down to the Parramatta River to blow off some steam on the playground, it was fantastic! We really loved the massive slide and had a great time there!

We would definitely recommend other Stage 3 groups to go and see “The Little Prince”, we loved every minute and know that they would too!

Workers in the Community Stage 1 Incursions

We have had three exciting visits this term to help us learn about how different workers serve the community.

We have been visited by a police officer, a nurse and four fire fighters.

We especially liked sitting in the fire engine and holding the fire hose!

Perhaps some of us will become police officers, nurses or firefighters when we grow up.

We also enjoyed learning about how police keep the community safe and how nurses care for their patients.

On Tuesday the 30th August two teams of intrepid authors and illustrators arrived at OGPS ready to undertake a mammoth task, to write, illustrate, edit and publish a book in a day.

Write a book in a day is a nationwide writing competition where teams of students have 12 hours to write, illustrate, edit and publish a book from individual parameters emailed to each team at 8am on the day of the competition. Prior to 8am all each team knew was that they would be given two main human characters, a non – human character, a setting, an issue and five random words that must be included.

Congratulations to all students involved and the superb books both teams produced. It was wonderful to see each team working so well together, knowing that to finish within the time limits, they needed to plan thoroughly so that each team member could work on a different chapter or illustration at the same time.

The books both teams produced will soon be in children’s hospitals throughout New South Wales and will also be able to be viewed at the write a book in a day website, https://www.writeabookinaday.com.

Further congratulations to these students as they raised over $700 for The Kid’s Cancer Project which is the benefactor of the write a book in a day project.

Police Students engaged in a range of police

related rotations which involved: investigating a crime scene, taking

fingerprints and creating their very own police badge.

Hospital At the hospital, students were able to

become a receptionist, doctor, paramedic or nurse. They created their own doctor’s

briefcase, bandaged patients and filled out important forms.

The day of Kindergarten’s first excursion finally arrived. We

were very excited to ride on the bus! On the bus ride we saw lots

of different buildings and vehicles. As we drove closer to

the city the buildings were taller and taller. The teachers told us

they are called ‘skyscrapers.’ We have been reading Possum Magic, and learning about Australian icons. So we

were very excited to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. We sat on the Opera House steps and then looked closely at the patterns in its tiles.
