High pressure controlvalve line adds sizes

The Kimray High Pressure Control

Valve line is newly expanded to in-

clude 8 and 10-in. ANSI Class 300

and 600 fl anges.

The HPCVs can be used for liq-

uid or gas discharge from vessels,

separators, treaters, knockouts, or in

other natural gas production duties.

Models feature a removable pis-

ton disk or hard seat. The soft seat

is located in the valve body — out

of the destructive fl ow path. This al-

lows for longer seat life and for you

to replace just the disk without re-

placing the entire piston. The valve’s

upstream-balanced piston design al-

lows for bubbletight shutoff against

high upstream pressure.

Full HPCV details are yours free.

From the editor . . .“Openers and closers and starters,” OG&PE’s annual Valves

and Actuators Special Report kicks off this June OG&PE.

That term came more than a few

years ago (25?) as I tried to explain

(as an Dad and editor — not an

engineer) to my elementary school-

age son and daughter — just ex-

actly what Dad was writing about

for one of our editions. It seemed

simple to them....open, close,

start! And this issue of “openers,

closers, starters” is no exception

with some brand new valve product line extensions, design

innovations, and actuating technological advances.

Just weeks after the International Liquid Terminals As-

sociation’s highly successful ILTA Conference and Trade-

show — is our editorial follow on many of the exhibitors we

visited in Houston. Starting on Page 13, read about — and

ask for free information or literature on some forward-think-

ing designs including L&J Technologies new radar gauges,

open architecture tank gauging systems from Rosemount/

Emerson Process Management, and new TODO break away

couplings from Emco Wheaton shown for the fi rst time in

the US at ILTA.

As naive as it may sound, after nearly 40 years of having

“products and services in my daily life,” I never cease to

be impressed with continuous design innovations coming

to OG&PE for us to share. This month is no exception with

a new frac sand processing separator and SAGD-applicable

downhole sensors presented on Page 7. They are not only

cutting edge developments but of particular timeliness in

the current oil sands, heavy oil, shale activities.

We also note the formation of a new frac plug removal

services company, ICON Oilfi eld (Page 7) as they enter this

segment of our dynamic oil and gas industry.

Best of all, you can ask for free information or literature

on any story or advertisement in this June OG&PE. It’s

simple: Print subscribers: go to ogpe.com to make your

requests by number or company on the Big Yellow “Free

Product Info Here” Button at the top of our website.

Digital subscribers: just click the number right on the

page. It’s that simple.

Videos! Take a look at ogpe.com for the newest Fluid

Components VeriCal fl ow meter calibration video from OTC

along with Micro Motion’s and SPX M&J on-site presenta-

tions. They’re short but powerfully informative.

Don’t forget Equip-Alert weekly E-Newsletter.

It comes out every Thursday and it’s free:

Oil, gas pipeline shutoff ballvalves highlight free literatureTrunnion mounted M&J ball

valves are described and il-

lustrated in this free bro-

chure to deliver positive oil

and gas pipeline shutoff.

The 6 to 42-in. ANSI 150

to 1500 designs feature a

three-piece bolted body with

internal trunnion blocks.

They operate over -20° to

+250°F./-29° to +121°C.

All incorporate a version of

the patented “EN” style seat

seal currently used on the M303 gate valve. A combina-

tion nylon and elastomer seal in the same face groove

acts as the primary seal in both high and low pressure

differential conditions. Seat rings are spring loaded for

low pressure sealing. For high pressure sealing the dif-

ferential area between the seat outside diameter and

face seal enhance the seal.

Also emphasized and shown are the valve’s standard

stem seal design which uses three seals to insure a

positive seal. Models are cited to provide double block

and bleed capability

Fault-tolerant, fail-safe HDCPatented 2004D SILstroke-3 overcomes standard hydraulic

directional valve porting patterns that prevent creation of any

fail-safe or fault-tolerant designs.

It’s on the market to provide continuous and reliable op-

eration of a hydraulic-driven ESDV while in the presence of

a failed-open or failed-closed hydraulic directional valve.

Series/parallel confi guration of the HDVs mitigates both the

spurious trip and dangerous failure of the ESDV, declares the

manufacturer. All fi rst HDV failures are transparent to the

operation of the ESDV because of the series/parallel 2004D

design. Full 2004D details are yours free.

Double block and bleed plug valves brochureDuraSeal plug valves are specifi ed, illustrated, and de-

scribed in this free six page brochure.

They are emphasized to seal mechanically. During ro-

tation of the plug there is no abrasion or wear between

sealing surfaces. When the slips reach closed position,

they expand fi rmly into the valve body. This creates

a primary elastomeric and secondary metal-to-metal

backup seal. “DuraSeal doesn’t require sealant under

any circumstance to seal,” notes the literature.

The 2 to 24-in. double block and bleed plug valves

are cited for bubbletight fi re-safe sealing integrity in

applications that require frequent isolation and testing

of gas or liquids. They are easily automated via hydraulic, pneumatic or electric

actuators, it’s noted.

Case History : Thern Incorporated, Winona MN USA

OG&PE June 2011 6

Special report + case history

Pemex increases offshore drilling reliability with new Thern custom winchesOne of the largest producers of crude oil in the world, Pemex, Petróleos Mexicanos, operates an annual average of 344 producing fi elds, 6,382 producing wells, and 225 off-

shore platforms. Pemex stats show the oil and gas conglomeration produces an average of over three million barrels of crude oil a day.

When a series of winches began to wear out on several offshore drilling platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico near

the cities of Del Carmen and Campeche, Mexico, Pemex couldn’t afford downtime on the rigs.

The search began for new winches and a new vendor, and Pemex sought the help of long-time partner, IPS Interna-

tional, a distribution company headquartered in Houston with offi ces in Mexico.

“Pemex gave us the specifi c customizations they were looking for,” said Mario Aviles, controller with IPS. ”We worked

to fi nd the best solutions for replacing the aging winches.”

Aviles worked with IPS International engineers in researching pneumatic winches based on Pemex specifi cations. His

extensive search led him to Thern, Inc., a U.S. winch and crane manufacturer located in Winona, Minnesota.

“We had never worked with Thern in the past, but we liked what they could do for us in terms of customization,”

Aviles said.

Pemex required 31 winches to manage the ascent and descent of mechanical change maneuvers throughout the

structural base of the drilling platform of several major marine rigs, each of which produces around 100,000 barrels

of oil per day. The platforms operate at 21,000 feet deep and employ nearly 200 employees per platform, so reduced

corrosion and improved features, such as the auto disc brake, were vital winch requirements.

“Because of the drill fl oor environment, we needed air winches in particular,” said Daniel Fernandez and Enrique

Hermida, IPS International engineers. “The winches are physically located near the actual drilling operations, and that

environment generates a great amount of friction. Mixing mechanical friction with an electric winch could create sparks

or cause a fi re, which we certainly wanted to avoid.”

Developing solutions for Pemex, Thern custom built the winches to include a stainless steel, remote-mount control

valve for easier operations and to protect against the Gulf’s warm, aggressively corrosive salt water. The winches were

additionally customized with lock-out lever shut-off valves to prevent accidental operation.

“Since the majority of lifting on these platforms is done overhead, the winch customizations provided better fl exibility

and more reliable operation,” said Bill Sievers, a representative with Thern who worked closely with IPS.

With new custom winches in place and operating at full capacity, the winches at work on Pemex offshore drilling

platforms are now less prone to corrosion, much better suited for operations and help the rigs produce crude oil the

world over.

Free electric actuators brochureSeries 2000 electric actuators are described, illustrated,

and specifi ed in this free 16-page brochure.

Quarter-turn and multi-turn designs highlight the se-

lection-guide literature.

Quarter-turn confi gurations are for ball, plug, and but-

terfl y valves as well as quarter-turn damper and louver

drives. Multi-turn versions are for gate, globe, check,

stop-check, and angle-check valves as well as sluice

gates, weir gates, and multi-turn damper drives.

Some 24 Series 2000 features are called-out on a two-

page cutaway illustration. These include motor options that cover most voltages

of single-phase or three-phase alternating current and direct current. Motor gear

selections allow for speed and torque output combinations. Handwheel gearset al-

lows you to limit rimpull required to operate valve manually regardless of torque

required. All major components are also described and shown throughout the lit-

erature.

Other important features are showcased to include torque limit and geared limit

drive assemblies, modular control package, options, and accessories.

Explosionproof valve positionersSeries 3731 explosionproof valve positioners are housed

in a rugged enclosure. Even if an explosive atmosphere

forms inside the enclosure and ignites — the enclosure

withstands the explosion to prevent passage of fl ames out

of explosive surroundings.

These intrinsically-safe positioners are accurate and

easy to operate. A single rotary pushbutton is all that’s

required for startup then turn to select parameters and

push to activate. This operation is possible because shaft

design of the rotary pushbutton through the housing is

explosionproof, emphasizes the manufacturer. Enclosure

design with its separate terminal compartment also allows direct cable entry or con-

nection without spark barriers for cable conduit systems.

Series 3731 comprises an easy-to-read crystal display which ensures relevant

data are visible at a glance. Regardless of valve mounting position, data are never

displayed upside down since the display rotates 180° via pushbutton.

Additional valve positioners information is yours free upon request.

Safe critical valve lockout delivered by interlockMechanical valve interlocks like this eliminate human er-

ror in valve lock-open or lock-closed operations.

They’re designed to ensure critical valves are locked in

proper position — compared to standard padlock and key

which provide no information about the current position

of a valve.

These interlocks operate with two color-coded keys

which through a trapped key mechanism, control the

open and closed position of a valve — and communicate

current state. When the green key is released, a valve is

locked in “locked-open” position. For the red key to be

released, a valve must be locked in “locked-closed” posi-

tion. If a valve is left in a midway position between open and closed — both keys

are trapped in the device.

These interlocks need no electronic wiring. Additional specifi cs are yours free.

New radar gauges introduced as ±3% accurate for multiple usesevo 2600 Radar Gauges are introduced as part of this

company’s new Evolution Series.

Models are designed to be

applicable in petroleum, petro-

chemical, chemical, polyethyl-

ene, molten sulfur, phosgene,

or liquefi ed gas operations.

Among antenna options are

conical horn and parabolic.

evo 2600 uses Frequency

Modulated Continuous Wave

technology. It operates in the

26GHz frequency band to en-

sure ±3% standard accuracy.

One of the gauge’s new

important features: e.WAVE

graphical LCD display. It’s

cited to “provide a vast array

of detailed information for the

user including level, tempera-

ture, discrete status, and a

magnitude of diagnostics.” In

special applications or circum-

stances, eWAVE display pro-

vides a graphical tank profi le to

ensure there are no unforeseen

obstructions or intrusions in level gauging applications.

It also allows fi ne tuning of the radar unit to cancel out

tank disturbances. All programmed and processed in-

formation can also be displayed on the radar’s e.WAVE

display.

These new radar gauges use their manufacturer’s

e.CAL Intuitive Setup Wizard to assure setup of the

gauge in minutes without violating explosionproof envi-

ronments. evo 2600 is confi gured via infrared technol-

ogy by using MCG 2150 handheld infrared calibrator.

There is also an optional ground level display unit. It

allows you to program and setup the radar gauges at

ground level without having to climb the tank.

Complete evo 2600 information is yours free.

Free brochure overviews gate, control, check, diverter valvesThis free four-page brochure

summarizes and illustrates

M&J Valve brands.

M303 thru-conduit fl oat-

ing slab gate valves come 6

to 84 in. API 6D to provide

pressure energized sealing

for high pressures.

EG expanding gate valves

with two-piece expanding

gate (gate and matching

“segment”) deliver tight me-

chanical seal for both high and low line pressure.

C303 gate valves (similar to M303 but with cast body

in 2 to 20-in. sizes) meet API 6D specs with a variety of

trims including NACE sour crude / gas service.

Danfl o control valves give control action depending

on how various valve ports are connected and what type

pilot or regulator is used.

Liquid surge relief with a DanFlo valve is achieved

by “loading” the plug cavity from a regulated nitrogen

source. A line pressure surge above the nitrogen set-

point immediately opens the valve.

Ball-trol rotary control valves with in-ball twin “V”

grooves control varying gas, steam, and liquid fl ow rates.

M&J check valves serve pipelines, transmission and

distribution, subsea, and general industrial uses.

Four-way diverter valves are for bidirectional meter

provers. They provide automatic pressure-gauge indica-

tion of double-block-and-bleed seal.

New break away couplingsshown for fi rst time in US at ILTAA new range of TODO

safety break away cou-

plings was unveiled in

the US at this ILTA.

They are announced

to “totally eliminate

human error at the

point of transfer.” Mod-

els are engineered to eliminate spillage and damage as-

sociated with drive and pull away incidents at point of

delivery.

The new couplings are engineered to increase fl ow

capacity levels. They come in 2 to 4-in. sizes, stainless

steel or aluminum. They are also available with a range

of elastomers. They use an advanced double valve de-

sign. This enables them to immediately react if a hose

or loading arm is subject to an excessive load — closing

both valves automatically — then permitting discon-

nection in complete safety, without spillage of poten-

tially hazardous liquids.

TODO safety break away couplings offer ultra-com-

pact design. They are designed to operate independent-

ly of other safety systems with an external power source.

And they are easily reset by one worker.

The new couplings are announced for a wide range of

tank truck and rail tanker applications. There they are

“expected to make a major contribution to safety levels

in every situation that requires the transfer of hazard-

ous, fl ammable liquids,” notes the manufacturer.

Oil-free compressors brochureI-Series oil-free compressors

are described, illustrated,

and specifi ed in this 16-page

brochure to transfer a wide

range of process gases.

Also used for gas boosting,

they move butadiene, hydro-

gen, helium, methyl chloride,

sulfur dioxide, chlorine, and

HCFCs, its noted.

Vertical industrial designs

are typically used where

gas compression ratio is less than 5:1. Such uses as

liquefi ed gas transfer are generally better suited for a

single-stage I-Series. It takes advantage of relatively

low differential pressures and offers very effi cient gas

compression.

Two-stage oil-free types divide the compression pro-

cess into two separate steps. This allows gas to be

cooled after the fi rst stage of compression for a lower

fi nal discharge temperature — common to booster and

vapor recovery applications.
