We are thrilled to introduce our Summer Min- ister, the Rev. Dr. L’Anni Hill! L’Anni (pronounced “LANN-ee”) is an experi- enced pastor and therapist whose back- ground includes everything from international ministry in the Netherlands to her own pri- vate practice in Dunwoody. We are fortunate to have L’Anni minister with us this summer! The interview team (John Gunter, Linda Hawthorne, Mark Kelly, Cortlandt Minnich, and Donna Poseidon) started with nine applicants, which they nar- rowed down to three finalists whom they met, interviewed, and re- viewed sermons. Even with such a strong field, L’Anni was still the committee’s unanimous choice. L’Anni’s first Sunday with us will be June 1. It promises to be a good summer for all of us at Oglethorpe Pres- byterian, and we are particularly blessed to be able to provide our Pastor, Marthame Sanders, with three months of well-deserved renewal. Our receipt of a generous Lilly Endowment, Inc., grant has made all of this possible. From June 1 to September 1, Marthame will be spending the sum- mer in Chicago. As a stipulation of the grant, Marthame will not be engaged in any pastoral responsibilities during that time. This is important, as it will allow him time to refresh and re-energize. Our wonderful Parish Associate, Linda Hawthorne, will expand her ongoing pastoral care and visitation efforts. Our Christian Edu- cator (and Office Manager) Cheryl Hartman will increase her hours from thirty to forty per week to maintain program and office continuity. If you have any questions, please contact the members of the Pastoral Renewal Committee: John Gunter, Linda Hawthorne, Mark Kelly, or Donna Poseidon.

Sunday Morning Hospitality

It takes many hands to make Sunday morning run smoothly. In an effort to share the fun and responsibility, we are aiming for a three-month rotation in our various roles. And we are very, very close! We are looking for a few more folks to lend a hand with ushering, the sound system, PowerPoint, and in the nurse-ry. Want to get involved? Contact the church office: 404.233.5469, [email protected].

Next Care Day on May 3 The first Saturday of the month is our church care day! We have plenty of things to do outside this month! In case of rain, we have dozens of indoor projects needing attention such as painting the boiler room floor, repairing ceiling tiles, touch-up paint-ing, and cleaning out storage rooms, among many others. Come and lend a hand on Saturday, May 3, from 9am to 12pm.

Potholes You have probably noticed the potholes “decorating” our parking lot, especially the one that has rendered one of the lower lot entrances unusable. We are looking to our community to help us fix this non-budgeted item, estimated at a cost of $3000. You can send your contributions to the church. Be sure to put “potholes” in the memo line.

Capital Campaign Construction Construction on two new bathrooms - one on the sanctuary level and one on the fellowship hall level - begins soon!

Outside the window, everything that flowers in May is sprouting up. A few weeks ago, there was a quick and light snowfall which seemed incongruous against the newly-green grass… but those days are past. Spring is firmly in control now. Linked linguistically with spring, dawn and new light, Easter is firmly in control now, too. The May Sunday scripture readings continually re-mind us of the events of that resurrection day. We hear stories of the appearances of Jesus, of the disciples’ attempts to understand what was happening, and ultimately of deciding what to do next. So with us. Having celebrated Easter a few weeks ago, we now have to decide what to do next. Remember the story of Peter, who uncer-tain what he should do next, simply announced,

“I’m going fishing.” When the fishing yielded no results, he was then able to look up and see Je-sus, who said , “Follow me.” And that’s what Peter did. Let’s do the same.

Blessings to you, as you follow Jesus.

Finally, May

Hospitality Ministry What is an OPC usher/counter? The face of the church...ushers you from outside world into sanc-tuary...welcomes you to worship...collects and counts the offering...gives you a bulletin and helps you feel comfortable during the worship service… What is an OPC greeter? Welcomes you to OPC...a smile...opens the door...answers ques-tions...guides you to the sanctuary and other are-as of the building...collects the offering… These descriptions are from a gathering of greet-ers and ushers for an evening of discussion and fellowship as we shared best practices with one another. We generated a number of ideas to better wel-come our visitors. Some have been put in place already, including offering guests a nametag and adding information for visitors to our recently re-vamped web site (www.opcbrookhaven.org). The Evangelism team will consider many other ideas in the next few months.

We also learned that at least two (and usually four to six!) people come to OPC Sunday worship for the first time each week since the beginning of 2014. That means that, by the end of March, 40 new faces had come through our doors! Our greeters and ushers shape guests’ first impres-sions, and we are grateful for their service. If you want to share your spiritual gift of hospitali-ty , we are looking for a few additional greeters, ushers, and counters to serve four times a year. Please consider this opportunity for service; to learn more or volunteer, contact Donna Poseidon ([email protected], 216.280.0950).

The Brookhaven Bolt Approaches! Put on your OPC t-shirt and running shoes and take part in the Brookhaven Bolt 5K! The event benefits Ashford Park Elementary and will take place on Saturday, May 17, at 8am. Registration forms are on the bulletin board in the church lobby. If you want to participate, contact Donna Poseidon (216.280.0950) or Jeff Morris (770.452.1799).

MISSION Jeff Morris

Habitat for Humanity

OPC's thirteenth Habitat for Humanity build be-gins on May 3, 2014! Construction will continue for the next six Saturdays (excluding Memorial Day weekend), wrapping up with the house dedi-cation on June 21st. We need volunteers of all skill levels (or no skill whatsoever) for all dates! OPC volunteers typically meet at the church at 7:30 a.m. and then carpool to the build site. This year, our homeowner is Ms. Hardy, and the build site is 1317 Gideons Drive, SW, At-lanta 30314. Note: On May 10th, OPC will pro-vide lunch at the build site and we could use help with this, too. Please sign up in the church lobby, where additional information is posted! You may also call Jeff Morris at 770-452-1799.

Food Pantry Numbers This March, our food pantry served 252 house-holds. That’s 934 persons (including 393 children and 28 seniors), 680 bags of food, and 12,720 total pounds of food! Thank you to all of our faithful volunteers! Volunteers are needed to serve dinner at the Journey Night Shelter on 4th Saturday of each month. Serving in this ministry is fun and easy! Coordinate your menu in advance with your fellow volunteers, arrive to prepare the meal at 6:30pm, and serve the meal at 7pm. We typi-cally depart by 8pm.
