O&G NEWS

One of the toughest pump duties in offshore processing is the transport of reclaimed oil, open drains and closed drains. The fluids contain hydrocarbons, sea water, fresh water, production chemicals, gels, cement, weight material, particles, and last but not least sand. In addition to erosion due to solids, cavitation might also be a problem, as the collection tanks for these liquids often are at the lowest point on the production facility, and NPSH available is low.

pump optionsThe pumps selected for these tough duties are progressing cavity pumps, screw pumps, and lately also lobe rotor pumps. Progressing cavity pumps, or mono pumps as they are sometimes called, have often been replaced by other positive displacement pumps, as operational cost is high due to wear on the stators caused by swelling of the elastomers, in addition to erosion by particles. Specially adapted two-spindle screw pumps

novaplex 040-4d reclaImed oIl duty

with a vertical submerged mounting with open end suction havereplaced the progressing cavity pumps. However, life time has hardly improved. During the last two years, lobe rotor pumps have been installed for drains duties. In order to further reduce mainte-nance, the wetted parts have been diamond coated.

B+l solution on gullfaks BWhen the Gullfaks B platform was designed, the reclaimed oil pumps (duty 30 m3/h against the 2.stage separator pressure of 58 bar) were selected as single stage - high speed centrifugal pumps. The duty is intermittent. Over the years, and with an increasing amount of sand, the lifetime of the high speed impellers was very short. The pumps were replaced by two-spindle screw pumps. However, even after replacing the internals of the pumps with a special erosion resistant alloy, the lifetime was not satisfactory and operational costs were high. In year 2000 a

Bran+Luebbe (B+L) Novaplex diaphragm process pump was ordered. This pump, 57 PF 02, has 4 double diaphragm pumpheads. One of the reasons for selecting this pump was a good track record for pumping nickel slurry at high pressure (200 bar) and high temperature. The pumpheads with PTFE diaphragms are 100% leak free and has a minimum wear, as there are no seals/stuffing box arrangement between the medium and atmosphere. The valves have 1.4462 Duplex valve housings, with seats and discs in hard metal HM/CD 12 N. The operators are very happy with the pump, and claim that the only thing that has stopped it in these years is the yellow/black plastic security chain used offshore.

the novaplex pump The Novaplex process diaphragm pump is a modular pump with 3-5 gears/heads. It has splash lubrication, no instruments for supervision and no cooler/heater. The pump can be capacity controlled by the motor speed all the way down to zero. The pump-head is the same as on B+L’s API 675 metering pumps and handles pressures to 790 bar. Typical applications for Novaplex pumps are: methanol, glycol, hydrocarbon condensate, liquid CO2, H2S waste, drains, reclaimed oil, and LPG. Novaplex is a good alternative to packed plunger pumps and multi-stage or high speed centrifugal pumps thanks to less downtime/maintenance, leak free operation, higher efficiencies (less power) and a big turndown ratio. There are no mechanical seals or seal flush systems. In the UK and theNetherlands a lot of packed plunger triplex pumps for hydrocarbon condensate have been replaced by Novaplex in later years.

Lightnin, the world’s biggest supplier of mixing technology, has more than 80 years of unrivalled experience, process knowledge and technological innovation. Lightnin guarantees the performance of the mixer as well as the mixing result. The mud mixers are designed and engineered to provide complete suspension of the mud and cuttings. This provides a uniform feed to the mud cleaning equipment regardless of the mud weight.

Efficient mixing also minimizes the solids build-up on tank bottoms and helps keep mud weights uniform. Lightnin’s unrivalled, patented, Hydrofoil high flow, high efficiency style impellers are used to develop the highest flow achievable for solid suspensions and blending.

equal power - not equal mixing

lightnin mixers

Lightnin’s axial flow impellers provide more mixing at the same motor power than competitive impellers. The exclusive helical gear construction minimizes gear wear that often plagues worm gear designs. Other benefits are:

• No steady bearings (bottom support)Some mud systems require a low profile mixer to accommodate headroom requirements. Lightnin right angle drives have a very low vertical profile.

• Oversized bearings and shafts increase life and decrease maintenance• Splash lubrication provides constant flow to all critical areas• Dry well construction

The heart in every Bran+Luebbe (B+L) system is the Novados metering pump. The majority of these pumps have the B+L double diaphragm pumphead with mechanical refill actuation, which ensures years of unattended service without any leakage to the environment. On several Norwegian platforms B+L double diaphragm pumpheads are working at more than 700 bar discharge pressure. The wetted parts standards are 316 stainless and 22 Duplex, but the pumps can also be supplied in 6Mo and Hastelloy.

The capacity is controlled by variation of the stroke length, during operation and stand still, manually or remotely by a servo motor or a pneumatic actuator with a positioner. For systems where floor space is limited, multiple head pumps in a vertical configuration are used. B+L oil and gas systems are designed, built, tested, and documented at a factory in Brixworth, outside Northampton, where pump systems have been built since the end of the seventies. It goes without saying that B+L pumps comply with all relevant rules and standards.

Wilden is represented by AxFlow in Norway, UK and Sweden.

AxFlow Aberdeen has been expanding its reputation and business in the North Sea oil and gas industry, winning orders for pump units to be used on a Produced Water Package (PWP).

motive water and reject return pumpsThe PWP comprises the Opus Compact Flotation technology with Mare’s Tail skid, motive water skid and reject collection skid and its primary role is to treat produced water prior to its disposal over-board. AxFlow Aberdeen’s role has been to supply the Motive Water and Reject Return Pumps and design/build a DeOiler Chemical Injection Package. The contract for the Motive Water and Reject Return Pumps was placed by Opus Maxim Ltd and covered the supply and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of four API Waukesha positive displacement rotary pumps for the produced water handling package. The Compact Flotation Units (CFUs) provide effective removal of small oil droplets and other compounds from produced water, which proves to be difficult when using traditional gravity based methods. The units selected

were two 320 U2 Reject Return Pumps capable of delivering 46.4 m³/hr and two 420 U1 Motive Water Pumps capable of delivering 66.2 m³/hr. According to Derek Wallace from AxFlow Aberdeen, each of the Zone 1 ATEX certified pumps was fitted with an API 682 double mechanical shaft seal system, 37 kW electric motors, drive and flexible coupling all mounted on a carbon steel base plate. VSD for the pumps was provided using four ABB ACS 800 Frequency Inverters.

deoiler chemical InjectionThe DeOiler Chemical Injection Package designed and built by AxFlow is required on the PWP to improve the clarity of the produced water in order to meet governmental specifications for overboard discharge. The unit was supplied with a 750 litre working capacity day tank and instrumentation unit containing flow meters, check valves and relief valves. “Metering pumps on the DeOiler unit have to achieve flow rates from 0.033 lt/h to 6.6 lt/h”, says Derek Wallace.”The 200:1 turndown is achieved by utilising a spill back design.”
