Mission Accomplished for Operation: Candy Cane

On the Cover: XYZ Network members help load toys donated during the annual Refinery-wide toy drive.

XYZ Network members collected toys for more than 110 children during the annual Operation: Candy Cane toy drive.

This year’s Operation: Candy Cane, sponsored by the XYZ Network, kicked off in November and provided gifts for many children in the Jackson County and Mobile areas who needed help to make their Christmas special. The donations sponsored the St. Mary’s Home in Mobile and Salvation Army of Jackson County Angel programs.

Pascagoula Refinery employees adopted more than 60 angels from the Salvation Army, and more than 50 St. Mary’s angels. Another $2,500 was donated and used to complete

angel wish lists, and to buy additional gifts for Salvation Army angels and St. Mary’s orphanage.

Many children had a happy Christmas morning because of the generosity of Refinery employees. Special thanks to Morris Bryant (RBM-Blending and Shipping) for serving as the Refinery Leadership Team sponsor, and to Cassie Inabinett (Finance) and Anthony Fields (M&R) for leading the toy drive.

Chevron Hosts Hundreds of High School Students at Career FairApproximately 400 students from area high schools

attended a career fair hosted by Chevron Pascagoula Refinery in November. Students in Project Lead The Way programs at each school also participated in the event.

Interactive displays gave the students hands-on experience with the equipment and tools of the trade at each booth, and Chevron personnel provided guidance and advice about training and education. Students also participated in a windshield tour of the Pascagoula Refinery. Pictured at right, operator Fred Lang (Utilities) explained what Chevron operators do at the Pascagoula Refinery.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who made this event successful.

Chevron Pascagoula Refinery recently announced that its 2015 Fuel Your School program generated $50,000 to help fund 65 classroom projects, including 28 focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which helps connect real world experiences to classroom learning for 7,933 students at 35 Jackson County public schools.

Students at Singing River Academy received Boogie Board writing tablets to enhance math learning. The tools help students complete small group projects, improve skill comprehension, share with the group and solve math word problems with innovative technology.

“The writing tablets that Chevron helped fund enable my students to get rid of distractions and engage with learning,” said Charlene Hooks, recipient math teacher from Singing River Academy. “In a world where technology surrounds us every day, using a technological utensil to solve math problems brings relevancy and excitement into my classroom.”

Through the Fuel Your School program, Chevron contributed $1 when consumers purchased eight or more gallons of fuel at participating Chevron and Texaco stations in Jackson County during the month of October, generating $50,000 to help fund eligible classroom projects at local public schools.

“At Chevron, we know how important it is for students

to be technologically fluent,” said Bruce Chinn, Chevron Pascagoula Refinery general manager. “Through the Fuel Your School program, we are asisting local teachers purchase technology that enhances the learning environment and contributes to the development and growth of future generations.”

An additional $121,000 was also donated to local DonorsChoose.org projects through a corporate initiative.

Environmental stewardship is a priority for the Pascagoula Refinery. Chevron was honored to be part of the ceremony celebrating the opening of the Pascagoula River Audubon Center, and congratulate PRAC executive director Mark LaSalle and all of the volunteers who had a hand in the completion of that project. Above, LaSalle welcomes Refinery General Manager Bruce Chinn to the podium.

Veterans Network Hosts Retired Admiral for Annual Event

It was standing room only at the annual Veteran’s Day luncheon, hosted Nov. 11 by the Pascagoula Refinery Veterans Network.

Retired U.S. Navy Adm. Pat Hall joined Chevron after his retirement in 2014. He currently serves as the Senior Leadership Advisor for Global Drilling and Completions at Chevron Services Company, where he provides leadership development advice and guidance.

He addressed nearly 100 Refinery employees at the event, emphasizing that leadership is about people, and that employees at every level of the organization have the potential and responsibility to exercise leadership.

Alan Sudduth, Chevron’s Public and Government Affairs Manager for Mississippi, was named a Top Community Leader at the One Coast Awards ceremony on Nov. 16 in Biloxi.

The awards program was hosted by The Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, Inc. in conjunction with the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, and was a rebranding of the former Roland Weeks Hall of Fame, The Sun Herald Top 10 Under 40 and Community Leader Awards.

“Volunteers are the lifeline of South Mississippi,” explained Kimberly Nastasi, Chief Executive Officer of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, Inc. “So many individuals give tirelessly to ensure the prosperity of our region and the enhancement of our quality of life. These individuals need to be recognized and have their achievements spotlighted.”

Sudduth was honored and humbled by the award.“I recognize that Chevron makes this moment possible for

me,” he said. “Without the resources the Pascagoula Refinery provides, I could not have as much of an impact on our community and our quality of life.”

Clients at the Home of Grace (HoG) have a new tool to learn a trade thanks to a joint effort between the Procurement and Maintenance departments at Chevron’s Pascagoula Refinery.

Refinery representatives knew HoG could use a welding machine to help clients learn a trade and improve their job opportunities after completing treatment at the residential substance abuse facility. Refinery Maintenance Team Lead Joe Hudson found a machine that worked well, but no longer met Chevron’s needs.

Then Refinery’s Instrumentation and Electrical Shop and Garage mechanics inspected the machine, repaired the

control board and made sure the equipment would work well for HoG. The Refinery’s Tool Room staff made up a whip to go with the machine since HoG didn’t have any welding equipment. To make sure the students had material for learning, Jerry Poiroux (Maintenance Team Lead) collected 18-inch scrap pieces around the Refinery, and then beveled the ends to help the students.

Kenny Watson, Chevron Maintenance General Team Lead, praised the employees who worked together to deliver the machine. “It’s rewarding for all of us to know that we each played a small part in ultimately helping out the folks at Home of Grace who want to learn a trade,” Watson said.

Nearly 30 volunteers from Chevron Pascagoula Refinery partnered with the Pascagoula River Audubon Center for the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup in October. In previous years, the Chevron team collected trash on the barrier islands. This year, the group focused on an inshore and land-based cleanup in the Bayou Chicot area of Pascagoula, gathering 898 items like plastic bottles, tennis balls, food wrappers and fishing line.

Special thanks to the following Chevron and Audubon volunteers, family members and friends who participated in the clean-up: Sam Taylor (Chevron), Chad Williams (Chevron), Bart Phillips (Chevron), Brad Jednat (Chevron),

Greg Byrd (Chevron), David Webb (Chevron), Mike Dean (Chevron), Kevin Rempel (Chevron), Kenny Cumbest (Chevron), J.L Israel (Chevron), Mike Aldacosta (Chevron), Ernie Martin (Chevron), Brandi Quinnelly (Chevron), Joelle Diamond (Chevron), Sheri Glowinski (Audubon), Sarah Pacyna (Audubon), David Taylor (Chevron), Steve Taylor (family), Brooke Taylor (family), Joseph Rowe (Chevron), Cleve Bond (Chevron), Tyus Bond (family), Shannon Crane (Chevron), Missy McCreary (family), Desiree Howell (Chevron), Joe Williams (Chevron), Trudi Dixon (Chevron), Julianna Gallego (Chevron) and Amy Brandenstein (Chevron).

A new bachelor’s degree program in engineering offered through a Mississippi State University (MSU) and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) partnership received a $250,000 boost from Chevron.

Chevron Pascagoula Refinery and Chevron Gulf of Mexico made a joint presentation of $150,000 in November to support the MSU/MGCCC Engineering on the Coast program. The gift, part of a total combined donation of $250,000, supports the purchase of lab equipment for the four-year program located at MGCCC’s Jackson County Campus.

Bruce Chinn, General Manager of Chevron’s Pascagoula Refinery, and Mike Illanne, vice president of the Gulf of Mexico Business Unit made the presentation to MSU President Mark E. Keenum and MGCCC President Mary S. Graham.

“It’s exciting to think about all of the potential and the benefits this partnership between Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Mississippi State University will bring to students in Jackson County and throughout the Gulf Coast region,” Chinn said. “This program will make a world-class engineering education more accessible for so many students. From my perspective at Chevron’s Pascagoula Refinery, there is tremendous value in being able to cultivate this

highly educated workforce right here in Jackson County. We appreciate the opportunity to support this program.”

Keenum said, “We appreciate the generosity of Chevron Pascagoula and Chevron Gulf of Mexico in supporting this new initiative. They recognize the impact this program will have in producing engineering graduates to meet the needs of business and industry throughout the Gulf Coast region.”

Graham said MGCCC strives to offer students the best opportunities for achieving their educational goals close to home. “Our partnership with Mississippi State University and Chevron is opening doors for our students to a baccalaureate degree in engineering, where they can learn in world-class laboratories that will prepare them for the workplace.”

MSU’s Bagley College offers two Bachelor of Science degrees through collaboration with MGCCC at the Jackson County campus. Students can complete a two-year Associate of Science degree from MGCCC before enrolling in electrical or mechanical engineering classes leading to bachelor’s degrees from Mississippi State. The engineering classes are offered by Bagley College faculty on campus at Gautier and through synchronous online delivery from MSU’s Starkville campus.
