fiVB Board of administration meets■ the hosts for the 2011 fiVB Junior and Youth World championships and the dates for the 2010 fiVB club World champion-ships were just two of the key decisions reached by the fiVB Board of administra-tion during its meeting in Punta cana, the Dominican Republic from april 14-16.

FIVB President Mr. Jizhong Wei opened the meeting by explaining that the FIVB has to work for the national federations in order to expand further as an interna-tional organisation.

“One of the goals of the FIVB is to lead and to share,” President Wei said. “Start-ing this year we will put a lot of financial resources aside for development and re-serve a development fund which will be available to all national federations and confederations. If a member has a good idea, send the project to the FIVB for ap-proval. Additionally, the Dominican Republic Minister of Sports, Mr. Felipe Payano, and the President of the Dominican Republic National Olympic Committee, Mr. Luis Mejia Oviedo, attended the opening of the three-day meeting.

Proposals put forward by the separate FIVB Commissions as well as the Execu-tive Committee, which met days prior to the Board of Administration, were dis-cussed by the Board.

Amongst a number of key decisions, the Board decided that Turkey, Peru and Bra-zil will host the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship, Women’s Junior World Championship and Men’s Junior World Championship respectively in 2011.

Additionally, it was announced that the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships will take place from December 14-21 in Doha, Qatar.

Furthermore, the Olympic qualification process for both the Volleyball and Beach Volleyball competitions at the 2012 Ol-ympic Games was approved, resulting in a simpler way for teams to attend the Games.

Finally, the meeting saw a new transpar-ent and democratic election regulation

cuba secure berth for Youth Olympic Games with victory over uSa

Cuba secured its place at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-22) victory over USA as the NORCECA Continental Boys’ Youth Championship concluded in Guadala-jara, Mexico on April 11.

Elsewhere, Puerto Rico took bronze after defeating hosts Mexico 3-0 (29-27, 28-26, 25-23) in a fierce and exciting match whilst Guatemala took fifth as they re-corded a 3-1 (25-17, 27-25, 16-25, 25-23) victory over the Dominican Republic.

Cuba, who remained unbeaten through-out the tournament, will now travel to Singapore for the first Youth Olym-pic Games from August 14-26 joining fellow qualifiers Argentina, DR Congo, Russia and Serbia. The final spot at the tournament will be decided at the Boys’ Youth Asian Championships from May 13-21, with the competition winners qualifying.

Additionally, Cuba will also travel to the 2011 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Champion-ship along with the U.S. who qualified after they reached the final, which was played in front of 3,000 spectators.

Cuba’s star player Wilfredo Leon, who also plays for the senior team, picked up the MVP, Best Scorer and Best Spiker

awards but coach Rodolfo Sanchez was quick to point out that it was a team ef-fort which saw them claim victory.

“I’m very happy because just as I had said at the beginning of this tournament, the team wasn’t just Leon,” Sanchez said af-ter the win. “He has been vital, the soul

of the side, but his teammates have complimented him and have also given their best. We fulfilled our dream.”

Brazilians Juliana and Larissa celebrate with the home crowd following their victory in the tournament

Beach Volleyball

While legendary Brazilian Emanuel Rego became the first international Beach Volleyball player to win over US$2-million in a career, 2008 Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers became the first American men’s team to capture a SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal in Brazil for 14 years by winning the Brasilia Open title on the opening weekend of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour 2010 on April 25.

Seeded third in the Main Draw, Dal-hausser and Rogers scored a 2-0 (21-16, 21-12) victory over fifth-seeded Emanuel and Alison Cerutti to share the $30,000 first-place prize. It was the Americans’ ninth international gold medal and the pair continues its success following its last two SWATCH FIVB events last sea-son where they topped the podium in France (Marseille) and Austria (Klagen-furt).

Elsewhere, top-seeded Juliana Felis-berta Silva and Larissa Franca picked up where they left off last year as the Bra-zilians defeated Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig of Germany for the gold medal one day earlier.

The 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) title win on the Esplanada dos Ministérios center court in Brasilia over fifth-seeded Goller and Ludwig marked the second-straight year that Juliana and Larissa have captured the Brasilia Open. This year’s Brasilia Open was part of the 50th anniversary celebration for the Brazilian capital. The SWATCH FIVB World Tour now moves on to China for the Shanghai Open from May 3-9.

San Juan prepares itself for 2010 fiVB World league

It can be argued that San Juan, Argentina, one of the sites for the preliminary rounds of the 2010 FIVB World League, has had some of the best experi-ence in organising Volleyball events after posting record

attendance figures for the gripping final of the ACLAV Argentine A1 Men Teams League between Drean Bolivar and La Union de Formosa in 2009. The province of San Juan has never reached the final stages of the league, however the stadium often hosts top Volleyball events such as the Argentine league final, with over 14,000 fans pack-ing into the Aldo Cantoni San Juan Sta-dium for the 2009 final. Cantoni Stadium also illustrated that Ar-gentina has the ability to host spectacu-lar World League matches, with the host side facing off against France in 2009 with the hope of a Final Six place boost-ing attendance levels to 9,000. On that occasion Argentina won and went on to finish fifth in the World League finals in Belgrade, Serbia.

The President of the Do-minican Republic Olym-pic Committee, Mr. Luis Mejia Oviedo, praised the FIVB Executive Commit-tee and Board of Admin-

istration members, commending them on the increase in popularity of the sport around the world at the Board of Administration meeting in Punta Cana from April 14-18.

“Volleyball and Beach Volleyball were two of the most followed disciplines during the last two editions of the Ol-ympics in Athens and Beijing,” he said.

“And as of today I can say that Volleyball has a place among the top three sports in the Olympics.”

“It has been a long time since the sport was first accepted as an Olympic sport in 1964 but you are the people respon-sible of that advance,” he added. “You have worked very hard to accomplish those achievements, with the appro-priate change of the rules and all the efforts made to disseminate the seed of Volleyball in every corner of the planet.”
