IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
ISU
Beardshear Hall Central Campus
WELCOME TO THE BIRTHPLACE FOR BREAKTHROUGHS Welcome to Iowa State University. This is the place where the world’s first electronic digital computer was invented. This is the home to the nation’s first college of veterinary medicine. And this is the place where biotechnology has been studied even before it had a name. This is Iowa State University of Science and Technology where, for 161 years, our faculty, staff and students , through innovation and entrepreneurship, have been pushing the boundaries of knowledge, seeking amazing new discoveries and making the impossible possible. We are adventurers.
WELCOME TO OUR CAMPUS. With so many breakthroughs taking place at Iowa State, our campus is like a living museum. Look for historical signs, plaques, markers and banners around campus that tell just some of the stories of our milestones, discoveries and distinguished alumni. You’ll quickly discover on your walk through campus how international Iowa State is – 34,000+ students from more than 100 countries and all 50 states. You’ll feel our friendly and welcoming personality through the smiles and can-do spirit of our world-class faculty and staff. Make a reservation and enjoy lunch or dinner at the Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom, a delightful experience of good food in a high-quality teaching/learning atmosphere for students in the nationally ranked hospitality management program.
The first electronic digital computer, called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer, was built on campus by John Vincent Atanasoff, a physics professor, and an engineering graduate student, Clifford Berry. Tour an exhibit about the ABC on the main floor of Durham Computation Center and then view Atanasoff’s personal awards, books, computer and desk in an exhibit on the third floor of the same building.
WORLD-CHANGING BREAKTHROUGHS AREN’T THE ONLY THINGS THAT TAKE PLACE AT IOWA STATE. Don’t miss grabbing a mocha latte at The Bookends in the Parks Library, then sit in the George Washington Carver Plaza (named after one of our most famous alumni) and enjoy a mid-day concert played by the university’s carillonneur in the landmark Campanile. Enjoy strolling throughout central campus during the fall and early winter and seeing major works of art in the nation’s largest collection of public art on a university campus. See contemporary art exhibitions in the Christian Petersen Art Museum in Morrill Hall and the Anderson Sculpture Garden right outside; tour the campus’ first building, the Farm House, now a museum of the early land grant days of Iowa State University; view one of the Midwest’s largest collections of cut glass at the Brunnier Art Museum. And by the way, did you know that you are on the 5th most beautiful campus in the world, according to Buzzfeed?
Don’t forget to check the schedules of Division 1 Big 12 Conference athletic events when you visit. With 18 men’s and women’s Cyclones sports, you’re bound to find a rousing competition on campus.
Visit the Hughes Conservatory at Iowa State’s Reiman Gardens to see seasonal lush artistic creations and some of the world’s most exotic butterflies in the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing.
NEED SOME EVENING ENTERTAINMENT? Check out the musical performances by up and coming bands at The Maintenance Shop at the Memorial Union or take in a Broadway play or musical, an international orchestra performance, or a student production at the university’s Stephens Auditorium. The music department also offers delightful evening performances by Iowa State University bands, orchestras and singers.
Students, faculty and staff are enjoying their adventure at Iowa State. We hope you do too.

ABOUT AMES
UNIVERSITYBIG CITY FUNSMARTS WITH
Ames has been the smart choice for generations, and our vibrant, progressive city gets better every year. From recreational and cultural offerings to low unemployment and excellent schools, Ames residents enjoy a quality of life second to none. As home to Iowa State University, Ames has been the center of cutting-edge research, ground-breaking discoveries and major advances in fields including agriculture, veterinary medicine, and engineering. Both the city and university have enjoyed steady growth for many years. The strong connection between Ames and Iowa State University is long-established through tradition and history.
Located in the center of Iowa, Ames serves as a regional hub for shopping, dining, recreation, entertainment, and more. Beautiful historic homes populate Ames’ Historic Old Town neighborhood. From modern villages to stately brick row houses, Ames features a variety of distinct neighborhoods. Additionally, the city boasts more than 30 miles of hard surface paths and 1,200 acres of parkland and green space. We have several established business districts, dozens of independently owned restaurants and coffee houses, and lots of options for entertainment.
As we grow as a community, the City of Ames continually looks to expand our parks, improve our facilities, add trail connections, and explore new
recreational opportunities. The tree-lined streets and friendly people give Ames a small-town feel, while the cultural offerings, festivals, and sporting events rival those more common in larger metropolitan areas.
All of this progress has not gone unnoticed! We’ve received many awards in recent years for the great things happening in our community. Ames named one of the “Top 10 Cities for Career Opportunities in 2019” (SmartAsset, 2019) and was No. 4 of the “Best Places for Millennials to Move” (Reviews.org, 2019). In addition, Iowa has been named one of the “Top 10 Best U.S. States for Education” (US News, 2019) and No. 14 in “Overall Best States Rankings” (US News, 2019).
The future looks bright for Ames, Iowa, but we’re not a city that rests on its laurels. We look forward to continued expansion in business and commercial areas, exciting new residential subdivisions, investments in streets and infrastructure, and improvements to recreational offerings. In fact, our new Miracle Playground and Field will make a great destination this summer for kids of all ages!
With a stable economy, low crime rate, and strong school system, it’s no wonder more and more people are discovering Ames. We hope you agree that Ames is truly an exceptional community with lots to offer.
The smart choice for more than 150 years … Ames, Iowa.
