I hope you have had a good weekend. Te Ara Whiti/Beyond Diversity finished on Friday with a positive feel in the
room. And also with some tired people who were in a very reflective state. Many people in your team will have now
completed the workshop so the engagement in follow up conversations may increase.
Below are some key messages for your teams. You do have a leadership role yourself to facilitate the conversations as
they arise. We are all expected to consider what we have learnt and its application in our professional roles. We are
all responsible for addressing racial inequity in access to high quality education services. There are some tips below
you may want to use to support these conversations.
Let me know if you want to talk through anything.
Key Messages:
Check in with your team members
Use the Courageous Conversations about Race protocol
Listen to their experiences
Reassure people that the processing of Beyond Diversity workshop can take some time and that the learning
edge for this work is uncomfortable/different
Reflect on your own learning experience – model racially identifying yourself and selfreflection, describe how
you gained insight from Beyond Diversity, include a focus on your personal experience and how you have
moved to a focus on the professional.
Provide examples of how you have continued your learning, what actions you’ve taken in your work or share
your experiences using the protocol to have a conversation
If the experience has brought up trauma or a team member needs additional support refer them to EAP
support
Please discourage staff from imposing their experience on others, gather feedback (anonymously if required)
and send this through to
[email protected] or regional office racial equity coach.
Tips for facilitating conversation:
Use the CCAR compass. Ask your team members where are they on the compass? Ask inquiring questions
about their feelings and how they are doing personally?
Encourage people to speak from their Personal, Local and Immediate. Ask people to use the term ‘I’. For
example: I think..., I feel…, I didn’t like…, I liked..., I’ve reflected…
Talk to people about how they have shifted over time. For example: ‘Where were you at the end of day two,
and how did things shift for you over time?’
Encourage people to hear from multiple perspectives. Beyond Diversity is experienced differently and it’s
important that space is provided for both negative and positive personal experiences.

Mrena Mhina – hope you are well.
Have been thinking about Beyond Diversity recently… can we catch up again to perhaps progress? Our NCEA project is
rolling on very rapidly – later this year we will be starting development of Level 2.
See below a early report we’ve just done (not for wider distribution please) – but you will note that our change to
integrate mtauranga Mori into all NCEA subjects is being met relatively warmly by the sector (so far… we are only
midway through a public engagement process right now – closing 19 April).

How are you going? Looks like things have been busy – I’ve seen the invites for Beyond Diversity follow up sessions and
very keen to sign up to one myself.
Jackie asked me to update you on Secondary Tertiary training matters and the discussions we had in July.
Secondary Tertiary has done a round of Te Tiriti o Waitangi training – delivered by Groundwork.
9(2)(a)
9(2)(g)(i)
4
I was particularly impressed with the care and respect Jenn’s team demonstrated – and they were really good at
facilitating the learning. It was also a good opportunity to get a sense of the level of capability across the group – patchy
with some real gems, and a sense for how much progress can realistically be achieved over a two day workshop delivery
(in some cases not as much as others – the “wave” diagram is a useful way to try to illustrate people’s engagement with
Te Tiriti.
Your support to make that happen was hugely appreciated by Jackie and the whole group. We are keen to look at
further sessions in the future – at key points in the project (we are currently recruiting for a large number of the teams
who will be working on the NCEA changes over the next five years). Recruitment is going well but is intensive, hard work
for all the managers.
Beyond Diversity.
We have done an update to check our Secondary Tertiary staff who have already done Beyond Diversity – list attached.
This gives you a sense of the current level of demand in this group. I was thinking that you would offer ST a set number
of places at an upcoming BD session – and we would manage prioritising and backfilling who goes. We absolutely
appreciate that we need to prepare three people for every space you can offer us – so there are two back ups ready to
go if/when someone unexpectedly drops out.
The bigger work we discussed around access of our sector people into training like Beyond Diversity (those much larger
numbers outlined below) – I’m keen to try to progress this. Would it help for me to get a draft proposal underway – you
could help guide the best way to get the approvals and obviously the funding is significant and it’s not currently funded.
We had a recent experience where we brought an initiative to the CE that was unfunded and that didn’t go exactly as
we might have expected – agreement but no funding, so we essentially had to absorb the activity places massive stain
on the budgeted work… Can we discuss further? I can set up a time for you, me, Jackie and Jason to meet if you like?

Hi Mhina
It may well take a proposal/business case to IFB like you suggested. We are very interested in this but currently we are
trying to get the NCEA change programme reset done – confirming a new timeline with activity to begin at once (but
funded from MoE baselines – so puts a lot of pressure on ELSA). Announcement to be expected in week beginning 17
Aug (Cabinet to be informed either next week or the week after). Once we know we are going ahead we will put more
thinking and whatever it takes to progress the concept of investing in Beyond Diversity training for the teachers and
educational leaders we have serving on Review of Achievement Standards Subject Expert Groups (SEGs). Here’s a better
sense of the numbers:
Level 1 – approx. x30 SEGs in 2020 and early 2021 (approx. x8 external members per SEG) = ~240
Level 2 (not commencing yet: scheduled in 2021/22 – approx. x55 SEGs) = ~440
Level 3 (same as Level 2 but in 2022/23) = ~440

Thanks – I’ve flagged this opportunity with some people this morning. We would be keen to work with you to secure
the funding, design an approach, and support the training delivery if the NCEA work goes ahead.
So please let me know if/when you get an update to progress and we’ll put our heads together about how we might

Tn krua Thank you for being beside me across all of our korero last
week. I have put the themes below which I captured. Can you please
have a look and add or let me know of anything that reflects the
korero in a better way.
Greg – can you please confirm the total number of people who
attended across all the workshop? Thank you. I am keen to send this
to Marlene at the end of Monday.
There was a range of korero around the experiences of the Beyond
Diversity Workshop. Staff have provided a
Document 70
range of perspectives and were fully engaged in the conversations
across the six sessions. A total of _____ staff members attended
across the sessions.
Themes It was noted that after the workshop there was a lot of hurt
and unsettledness amongst staff. Because of the demand of work at
that time, they were feeling tired and had a lot of work to return
to. Many staff loved connecting with “colleagues This was the first
time we talked about ourselves” “I was wrong about my assumptions
of the lives my colleagues led”. “I have stopped assuming and I
identify race.” Some feel there are limited opportunities to move
together as a collective. Would like to meet as a larger group more
often to connect over this kaupapa. Some feel they are seeing
budget and time restraints already becoming barriers to progress
this mahi. Mori staff are working mainly in Mori Medium schools.
White staff would like more Mori staff working in English Medium
schools to support Mori students there. Lack of diversity among
staff noted. Many surprised to see the lack of non-white staff
across the region. Some staff are struggling to separate race from
racism. Therefore, not focusing on their own race and the way it
plays out in their work and home life. Some staff feel that they
were provided with valuable tools but forget to use them. Some
staff are using the tools and protocols within their lives – “I use
the work truth more”.” I am comfortable with the sound of my voice
“ Many staff are not sure where to go from here. Would like to see
pakeha taking leadership opportunities. Taihape claim is an example
of Mori who have had their identity and culture taken from them.
Team is addressing how important the response and support from the
MoE is. Younger staff show strong leadership and are open to
progressing on the racial equity continuum and demonstrating
leadership and actions.
Next steps Many staff said they would like to visit marae,
understand the history of the area Use the Aotearoa Histories as a
context for learning about Taranaki. Celebrate Taranaki tikanga.
Whakawhnaungatanga. Induct new staff.
However -this leads once again to pressure on Mori staff to lead
and organise. It was said that it is an example white people
looking for Mori to help them feel better and provide the solutions
again…What can be a white staff initiative where they lead their
own PLD?
Mori staff feedback
Presently In feelings - Amazed at the non Mori reflections which
demonstrated ignorance around the role fo race in everyone’s lives.
See a need to open up the conversation in the white space Noticed
colleagues trying to connect with Mori staff more Issues to be
addressed - - feel like we have gone backwards Eg Koha for kaumatua
are gone. Kai/biscuits to take to whanau hui are gone. Cultural rep
is gone.
Frustrated with the impact of whiteness across the organisation
Staff turnover means that there is a continuous stream of staff who
are unfamiliar with
Leadership Varying levels of cultural competence within the
management team Would like to see managers participating and
present in the workshops Who is leading this kaupapa in the
regions? It is leaderships role is to grow the cultural competence
of the staff. Would like good feedback for staff’s progress and
next step within this mahi. A staff member would like to do equity
conversations with white colleagues but she feels it is not her job
to organise – would like to see managers doing this or supporting
staff to. Feedback from leadership required – where are things
tracking with this work? Service managers looking to leadership to
support them to lead their teams.

Need help to heal. Some felt a wound was opened and left for them
to deal with. They want help with that. Would like the pre
information/emails to the workshop to come form their own managers
that they knew. And wanted time to prepare for the impact the
workshop was going to have.
Racial Equity Coaches
Greg has stepped up into a strong leadership and organisational
role. He introduced each session appropriately and contributed his
perspective at appropriate times. Greg supported me and made me
feel very welcome during this whole journey which has been very
much appreciated. It will Tuti’s skills as a racial coach were
demonstrated in the second day when he was able to lean into the
unpack conversations. He has strong leadership and the respect of
the staff. Tuti has many ideas for implementation and developing
the courageous conversation protocols across the staff within
region. His passion for this kaupapa is very evident which provides
a great opportunity for the region to engage with.

Racial Equity Office are currently looking into whether there is some financial support available for this hui as it will
be difficult to fill with just one region. However are you able to confirm whether there is a venue available for 100
people on the 2425 May if we were to hold it in Napier and get other regions to travel. No guarantees but venues
for large audiences are becoming harder to find at the moment so its useful to know.
Te Tiriti
We can ask the facilitators if they were available on another dates, but so that we don’t go back and forth, are you
able to provide us 3 dates (2days each) between now and the end of June that would work for your region? This
would be for up to 60 people.
Look forward to hearing from you

We can only fill about 4045 spaces for Beyond Diversity so we don’t make the threshold of 100 people so this is a
lot more difficult for us to run here.
In regards to Te Tiriti if another date can be organised (dependant on what is going on in our region) we would be

After checking my phone log I can confirm with you that we haven’t had a conversation since 15 March (your
original email) about not having enough people to hold a Beyond Diversity session here in Napier. We have had
previous conversations about this training not being able to be held in our Gisborne office as we had a whole team
(Schools/Kura) unable to attend due to already having a 2 day staff planning hui that had been booked in months
prior. Just wanted to clear this up as when I received today’s email from you saying you had reallocated this to
another region, I was caught off guard and felt out of the loop. I had been working with all of our Managers on
securing both of these dates and was coming back to you to confirm.
We have a number of staff across our HB/Tairwhiti region that haven’t been through Beyond Diversity training,
these include new staff, staff who missed due to leave/other commitments. The challenge for us in a small region is
to meet the numbers threshold required to run these sessions and I believe we will never have enough based on
these thresholds. It would be great to have some level of financial support to enable our staff to travel to other
regions when these trainings are happening. Eg. Gisborne staff could attend in Waikato or BOP, Napier staff could
attend Manawatu region or Wgtn.
After speaking with our Leadership Team today about Te Tiriti training the dates of 34 May are not going to work
for our region as we have a number of key staff members starting on this date in both offices (powhiri to welcome
these staff have been arranged). It is also the 1st day of Term 2 where staff have a number of commitments and
often respond to the needs of schools.
We are still wanting to be able to work with you to support our staff to attend Te Ara Whiti.

I am pleased to confirm that we are now able to provide both a Beyond Diversity and Te Tiriti huis in your region.
We have confirmed dates with the facilitators that they are available. Below I have noted the dates for this hui as
well as the location of the hui you had last time we held the full hui. Please note that based off the fact that we had
to cancel the last one based in Gisborne, we may not be able to hold a Beyond Diversity there as we will be unable
to fill it. Happy to have a korero with you about this.
Te Tiriti (up to 56 participants): 34 May May 2021 – previously held at Napier Sailing Club, Ahuriri Napier.
Beyond Diversity (up to 96 participants): 2425 May 2021 – previously held at Napier Sailing Club, Ahuriri Napier.
Can you please:
Check this with your director that this suits for your region
Confirm that the location within your region is the same
If the location within the region is the same, please confirm that the venue is available for these dates or
whether you will be changing venue
Confirm with the relevant venue their COVID information for both level 1 and level 2.
If you would like a copy of who in your region has completed each hui, please let me know and I can send
this to you
If you will not be able to fill the full XX spaces, please let me know as soon as possible and we can work out

Here is the attendance list to date for Wgtn Region. Please note the number in the bracket this indicates how many
more staff we need to register onto a workshop.
Also can we please confirm the following;
BD Napier – 2425 May – Can I get confirmation for this workshop please. Are we leaving it in Napier with 45
and get another 50 staff to travel to Napier, also they can get a venue? Or are we moving it to Waikato and all
Napier travel to Waikato and we pay for their travel and accom, the Napier office can get a venue though. If
it is a straight no then are we bringing it back to Wellington. If so then Rachael you will have to have a korero
with the Napier Director Daniel this week. Also we need to confirm just in case our facilitators have done
their travel etc.
ToW Napier 34 May Email was sent to confirm a new date – If the preferred date is not suitable 17/18 June
for our facilitator then we will have transfer all our 14/15 June staff onto other Wellington dates.
