GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 5
Bible Quiz Objectives 1. To promote and encourage our students in Bible memorization
and review of their Awana handbooks. (Psalm 119:11)
2. To provide a friendly, competitive atmosphere in which Awana
students can display their Bible knowledge and gain a sense of
accomplishment. (2 Timothy 2:15)
3. To give students a greater love for and a working knowledge of
the Bible. (Psalm 19:10)
4. To proclaim God's wonderful grace and salvation through the
Bible Quiz questions. Parents and friends may then see their
need of becoming a Christian and be challenged to accept
Christ as Savior. (Titus 2:11-13)
5. To build mentoring leader-participant relationship (Acts 20:32)
Quiz Format At the GLM Bible Quiz there are three basic types of questions that
are used with variations:
1. Multiple Choice is used at all levels. The Quizmaster asks a
question and then reads a list of possible answers in a
multiple-choice format. Each student has paddles with letters
on them. The students raise the appropriate paddle to display
their answer.
2. Written/Team Huddle is only used at the T&T level. The
Quizmaster asks a question and the team of students ‘huddle’
together to discuss the answer and write the answer down.
When instructed by the Quizmaster all teams raise their
answer boards.
3. Speed quiz is a fast-action event which works well with 5th
grade and older. Questions used are open-ended. The first
team to respond is given a chance to answer the question.
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 6
Trek/Journey Bible Quiz Format There will be two (2) rounds of questions. In the Trek quiz a round
is 20 questions, in the Journey quiz a round is made up of 25
questions. Both rounds are a mix of speed and multiple-choice. A
break will be given after each round for the coaches to talk with
their teams or make substitutions.
Before each question the Quizmaster will say, “question”,
announce the style of the question (speed or multiple choice) and
give the point value if the question is a speed question.
Organization for T&T 1. The preferred number of students per team is 2 or 3 (boys,
girls, or co-ed). In the case of a team of 3 competing directly
with a team of 2, the lowest score from a team of 3 will be
deleted. Churches are only allowed one team of 3 per book.
Churches that can only field one student, that student will be
combined with another team. Churches that have fewer
students than the minimum are encouraged to combine with
other churches on their own to form teams of 2 or 3.
2. Churches that can only field one student and that student is
placed on another team AND that team wins first place both
churches will receive the Team award/plaque.
3. A team refers to the participants in each book…not to a total
group of students representing a church.
Organization for Trek/Journey For Trek, a team consists of two, three, or four students (6th-8th
grade). For Journey, a team consists of two, three, or four
students (9th-12th grade). Churches that have fewer students
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 7
than the minimum are encouraged to combine with other
churches on their own to form teams.
Registration 1. Teams must register through the online registration process
before the deadline.
2. A church may enter one or more teams per book, but is not
required to enter all books.
3. The registration fee is set by the Awana Event Specialist to
help defray Quiz expenses and equipment.
General Information 1. Cheering and applauding are encouraged after each answer is
given. Informality helps the young people relax, and motivates
them as they compete.
2. Photographing/Videotaping or recording electronically of the
Bible Quiz will be permitted during the first four questions of
each segment.
3. Cell phones and pagers must be silenced during the Bible Quiz.
Students may not have cell phones during the quiz.
4. Coaches please watch your facial expressions and body
language; no signaling your students. If the student needs help
(bathroom or other problem) have the student raise their hand
to signal the Quizmaster (see Time-Outs). Advise parents to be
still and not to make gestures; wait for the ruling to be made
on the question.
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 8
Team 1. Each student must quiz in his/her current handbook for the
year. No student may quiz in the same book for more than
one year.
2. Teams may be divided into flights based on total number of
registered teams. Every effort will be made to put multiple
teams from the same church in different flights. Each book will
have its own set of awards.
Apparel 1. Awana emphasizes the importance of modesty, neatness, and
cleanliness in the apparel worn by both coaches and students.
2. T&T: All participants (including leaders and coaches) should
wear a team or church shirt, group matching clothing or
Awana uniform.
3. No hats will be permitted during quiz and hair should be such
that the student’s eyes are visible to judges.
Quiz Questions and Answers 1. All questions will be taken from the material in the latest
edition of the Awana handbooks; students are not expected to
interpret the materials.
2. The GLM Quiz Team Organizers will determine the quiz
material covered.
3. T&T: Questions may be asked on any part of the Start Here,
Explore, Memorize and Review Sections of the handbook.
Questions will be asked only on the emphasis of the verse as
defined in the handbook and not on other truths given in the
verse. Verses referenced in the “Explore” section need not be
memorized but they must be understood.
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 9
4. T&T: Questions will not be taken from Super Agents Cartoon,
Bonus Box, www.awana.org/go-kids, Fun Facts, Prayer Journal,
or Silver & Gold Extra Credit Sections. No questions will be
asked on portions of sections probing the student’s personal
experience.
5. Trek/Journey: The quiz covers material from the first half of
the handbook. Memory verses must be 'word perfect' and
include the reference. There will be no questions from
content that asks for an opinion or personal reflection.
6. All memorized Bible verses must be word perfect according to
the latest edition of the Awana handbook (KJV, NKJV, NIV or
ESV). The quotation must include the complete reference. For
Journey the quiz organizers will provide via the GLM website a
document that contains the Bible Verses.
7. Questions asked (other than Scripture quotations) may be
answered in the student's own words, but must be close to
what the handbook states. The Head Judge will make the final
determination.
8. The Quizmaster prefaces each question with the word
“Question." No talking is allowed from the word “Question"
until the answer is given.
9. Should the question be read improperly, at the discretion of
the Quizmaster, the question may be discarded, and a new
one selected.
10. When a speed question has been answered, the quizmaster
will ask, “Is that your answer?” Only when the student answers
“yes,” or time runs out, will the question be ruled correct or
incorrect with “That is a correct,” or, “I’m sorry, that is
incorrect.”
11. During speed questions answers are timed. Please do not
include extraneous information which may cause the answer
to be incorrect.
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 10
Use of Handbook, Manuals, Bibles, etc. Once the Bible Quiz event has begun, no further studying of
materials is allowed including but not limited to Bibles,
handbooks, PDA’s, laptop computers or other electronic devices.
Except for coaches, no study materials are allowed open once the
Bible Quiz has begun.
Time-Outs On behalf of their teams the official coach is the only one who can
request a time-out. The Head Judge is the only official who can
declare a brief time-out.
Coaches 1. There will be only one official coach per team during each
Quiz.
2. For T&T - If a coach is coaching more than one quiz, then
another adult must supervise those students who are waiting
their turn or have finished quizzing.
3. Team coaches may talk/encourage their teams while the
teams rotate for the different quiz segments.
4. Team coaches please do not go on the platform to seat your
team. The Quiz organizers will seat your students.
Appeals 1. Only the official coach may appeal a question or an answer.
The coach does this by calling out “Question" while still seated.
The immediate preceding question is the only one that may be
appealed by the coach.
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 11
2. Once the next question is started no appeal will be recognized.
All appeals are directed to the Head Judge. Once recognized
the coach confers privately with the Head Judge. After voicing
his/her question, the coach must return to his/her seat while
the decision is being made.
3. The Head Judge may consult with the judges before making a
decision. In all cases, the decisions of the Head Judge are final.
Schedule 1. Check-in starts one hour before the scheduled quiz. Teams are
to be checked in by their coaches before the quiz.
2. Coaches need to turn in the Parental Consent and Release of
Liability form for all their students at check-in.
3. Quiz begins promptly at scheduled time.
4. For T&T - The quiz consists of two segments: Multiple Choice
and Team Written (Huddle).
5. For Trek/Journey – The quiz consists of two rounds made up of
a mix of Multiple Choice and Speed.
6. After the quiz has been completed for all books, there may be
a short devotional, followed by the presentation of awards.
7. Upon arrival at the quiz, coaches should check in with the
registrar. Verify the names of the students listed on the score
sheet, seat position, along with Bible Version. There will be no
changes made to the teams after check in.
8. There will be a brief coaches meeting 30 minutes before the
quiz starts for coaches to receive any final instructions.

Multiple-Choice (MC) Each student/team is given a set of paddles with which they will
answer the multiple choice questions with either an “A, B, or C”
paddle. .
Sample MC Commands Quizmaster Action
“Multiple Choice Question” Students – eyes down; no talking
Quizmaster reads question and 3 possible answers
“Select your answer” 5 seconds; place hand on paddle
“Paddles Up” Raise paddle high with letter (A, B, or C); facing forward; keep up until “Paddles down”
Quizmaster states the correct answer.
Paddle high with letter (A, B, or C); facing forward
<Scorekeepers record points> Paddle high with letter (A, B, or C); facing forward
“Paddles Down” Lower paddles; Wait for next question; Eyes down
1. Questions and answers may be read twice if the Head Judge
feels the difficulty of the question warrants it.
2. Teams/Students raising their paddles late are disqualified from
that question. Also, after the “Paddles Up" call has been made,
no paddle may be exchanged for another paddle.
3. The students will be reminded to keep their eyes on their own
paddles. Looking any other place is an eye violation and can
result in a disqualification from that question. The Judges and
Head Scorekeeper will notify the Head Judge/scorekeepers of
any “eye” violations.

Speed Quiz Speed quiz is a fast-action event which works well with 5th grade
and older. Questions used are open-ended. All team members
participate together; one buzzer per team. The first team to buzz-
in is given a chance to answer the question. No student may
answer 2 questions without another student from their team
answering a question.
Sample Speed Quiz Commands Quizmaster Action
“Speed Question for ___ points”
Students – hands on buzzer; no talking
Quizmaster will read question. He will stop when any team buzzes in.
Verse recitations must be word perfect; All other answers are judged for content; Teams can buzz in at anytime
“Team _____” Team called has 10 seconds to confer and start answer; Once answer is started no more help from the team; 40 seconds to complete their answer; Student may start over within the 40 second limit
“Is that your answer?”
“Yes it is” – or – “No it is not”; If “NO”, then give new answer (within time limit)
“That is correct” –or– “I’m sorry that is incorrect”
If the answer is incorrect, the second team buzzed in will get a chance to answer. The question is re-read up to the point where the team buzzed in.
<Scorekeepers record points>
1. Speed questions will not be repeated unless the Head Judge
rules it necessary because of disturbance or delay.
2. From the time the microphone is given to the student, each
participant has 10 seconds to begin and then 40 seconds to
complete the answer. However, the student should indicate
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 14
within 10 seconds if he or she cannot answer, thereby avoiding
unnecessary delays and embarrassment.
3. Help from the audience may result in the question being
thrown out, even if the answer is correct.
4. If no team buzzes in within 10 seconds after the Quizmaster
finishes reading the question, the question is dropped and the
next question is read.
5. If the team answers correctly, the value of the question is
added to its score.
Speed Quiz for T&T If a team buzzes in before the question is completed, the
quizmaster will stop. The team must then give a correct, specific
answer.
Speed Quiz for Trek/Journey If the team answers incorrectly, the value of the question is
deducted from its score; then the next team to buzz in attempts to
answer.
Team Written (Huddle) Quiz for T&T Each student/team is given a whiteboard, marker and eraser with
which they will answer the written quiz questions.
For T&T all team members from each book will compete at the
same time in team written quiz. During the “Huddle” if a Team or
Team member is too loud or can be heard by another team – that
team answer may be marked as wrong.
For verses or a question that has a long answer the time is
increased. For T&T if the Head Judge sees teams still writing
additional time will be added.
GLM Awana Bible Quiz (11/23/2018) Page 15

Awana Bible Quiz
Official Rules and Regulations
T&T, Trek & Journey
The Bible Quiz meet is exciting, but wouldn’t even be possible
without your Awana missionary. They are doing a big job and need
help. You invest time and efforts in your club … are you investing in
your missionary, too?
Your Awana missionary travels throughout the area starting new
clubs/programs and counseling established ones. But they are
often hindered by lack of support.
Today, more than ever, your Awana missionary needs people to
share in their ministry. Can they count on your faithful support?
…the laborer is worthy of his hire.
Luke 10:7
