Welcome to Clash of the HallsWhen the great Dr. Leon Lederman visited his first Clash of the Halls Pep Rally manyyears ago, he experienced surprise. “Why,” he inquired, “are the best and brighteststudents in the world playing with scooters and food coloring?” A much younger Dr.Hernandez was the one to explain to Dr. Lederman that this is how IMSA studentschose to celebrate each other.

While other high school students get caught up in rowdiness and potentially unrulybehavior, the IMSA way is decisively different. We bask in the glory of production, revelin the beauty of performance, and share an enthusiastic appreciation for ourclassmates’ talents. From this energy, your Residential Student Leaders will encourageyour hall community to bond with each other as well as across campus. As the Clash ofthe Halls gets underway, engage in the competitions, join the events, and meet newpeople.

Let the festivities begin!

Best Wishes,

Rebecca Geiger and Vinesh KannanCampus Activities Board Director and President

Main Event ScoringA grand total of 22,680 points are available, at maximum, in Clash of the Halls. Amongthe CotH festivities, there are 13 events worth points divided into five tiers based onintensity. In each event, every single hall will earn points for successful completion.Scores are divided into two categories: Scaled and Elastic.

Elastic vs Scaled ScoringScaled scores are determined by placing in an event based on what tier the contestbelongs to. These scores are fixed, but in the event of a tie, both halls will be awardedthe scale value of the higher rank and the lower rank will be discarded. Elastic scoresrepresent the ratio between a hall’s performance in a contest and the optimalperformance. These scores vary (and can even have decimal values…) based on thestrength of a hall’s work and are added onto the scaled score regardless of rank. Elasticscoring is taken as a fraction of the highest scale score for an event.

Scoring by TierThe 13 scored events are divided into five tiers with point values awarded as follows:

Tier Elastic 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th

1A 300 300 260 220 180 140 100 60

Opening CeremonyEvent takes place on Monday, March 23rd, Midday

The official start of Clash of the Halls competitions will begin at this ceremony duringmidday! Students are encouraged to attend, evenif they do not plan on participating in the limbo competition, for the start of a newtradition is not something to miss.

The limbo competition will occur about halfway through the ceremony, before thelighting of the torch. Each hall will volunteer one representative to compete. Allcompetitors will line up in a single file line before a pole that is held parallel to theground. Each competitor will take one turn to attempt walking underneath the poleproperly. During their turn, the player must pass under the bar while their body is bentbackwards, with their chest facing the ceiling. If any part of the body other than the feettouch the floor or any part of the body touches the pole or any possible surroundingobjects, the player is eliminated. After each competitor has attempted goingunderneath the pole that is five feet above the ground, the pole will be lowered to fourfeet and six inches. The previously described process of passing under the pole andlowering it more each round will continue until only one player is left.

Friendly FeudFriendly Feud is based along the same lines as the popular Minute to Win It, FamilyFeud. For Clash of the Halls, IMSA’s faculty and staff have been surveyed fourquestions. Each night during Clash Week (Sunday through Wednesday), a singlequestion will be released to the halls. At a hall meeting, the students will decide on aresponse to the question and submit it. The scores of each night will be totaledthroughout the week and the halls will receive points based on their performance onThursday night.

NOTE: Only certain staff members write the questions and gather the responses.

Rules and RegulationsEach night a randomly selected question of the four will be released to the halls at 9:45PM Halls will then have fifteen (15) minutes to submit a response. Responses will besubmitted by one of the two Community Developers by email to Ms. Woods [email protected]. Response collection will be based on the timestamp of the email, meaning that halls have until 10:00 PM of that night to send the email. If a response issubmitted late, no points are awarded for that night. Suspected cheating of any form(based on the discretion of Student Council or CAB) is grounds for immediatedisqualification from Friendly Feud or Clash of the Halls. Students are not allowed tocontact faculty/staff to ask them about the Friendly Feud Questions.

ScoringLike Family Feud, scores will be a raw total of the number of survey responses thatmatch the submitted response. For example, if seven survey responses match a hall’sresponse, the hall would receive seven points. Point totals will be kept throughout theweek. At the end of the week, the points from each night will be totaled and halls willbe organized into first through seventh place with final points awarded accordingly.
