LETTER OF THANKS FROM SOUTH AFRICAN VISITORS

SUID-AFRIKAANSE JUKSKEIRAAD H ERTZOGSTRAAT 953

PRETORIA October 6th, 1972.

Mr. & Mrs. Ralph E. Dykes, 433 W. North Avenue, Lombard, Illinois 60148, U. S. A.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Dykes,

Our contingent has arrived safely at home a couple of weeks ago. They are all still talking about the enjoyable and interesting but also exhaustive trip to your wonderful country and wonderful people.

We regard it as a great privilege to have sent this contingent to your lovely people. It was a wonderful occasion for our contingent to visit you during the National Championships and to meet all the enthusiastic horseshoe pitchers and see them in action. The manager and the members of the contingent were overwhelmed by the hospitality and the way in which they were received and made at home.

We wish to convey our sincere thanks and appreciation to you for the trouble that have been taken in making our people feel at home, and also for the privilege that they could participate in your festivities.

We do hope that in future it would be possible for you to visit our country and our people, and we are convinced that a most enjoyable time is waiting on you.

Kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

D. A. KRUGER Secretary-Treasurer.

Jukskei Film Available One of the outstanding features of the 1972 World Tournament was the

visit of the South African Jukskei players. These wonderful people made a lasting impression on horseshoe players, fans and on the City of Greenville.

The primary purpose of the visit of this delegation was to demonstrate Jukskei, the South African counterpart of horseshoe, to the American people. This was done very skillfully on several occasions during the Tournament. Prior to their departure, "Prinsy" Priixsloo, official spokesman for the dele-gation, presented a 16mm film prepared by the South African Jukskei Asso-ciation, to Rollin Futrell of the Darke County Club. This film is available to horseshoe clubs and other interested organizations on a short-term loan basis. Send your request to Rollin Futrell, RR 3, Brumbaugh Road, Greenville, Ohio, 45331. Enclose $1.00 to cover handling and postage.

Jim Tucker A labama Sta te Winner Four classes played in the 1972 State Tournament. Two groups played in

Class A, one in Class B and one in Juniors. These were the ones holding NHPA membership cards. Several other players played without NHPA sanc-tion separately.

The winner in A-l was James Tucker with five wins and no losses. Ottie Reno won A-2 with a like record of 5-0. Reno then beat Tucker in a playoff in two straight games. Reno averaged 60% ringers for all games.

The winner in Class B was Lawrence Griffith and the Junior Champion was Jimmie Cleckler.

John P. Glass, Box 33, Calera, Alabama, 35040, was elected State Secretary to succeed W. C. "Clopton" Jones of Foley. A word of gratitude should be given to Jones who helped to found the Alabama chapter in 1964 and has served in some office ever since. Arm trouble has kept him from playing re-cently.

The 1973 State Tournament will be held in Calera over the Labor Day weekend.

Russ Sweeney, Bob Progen and Deborah Michaud Win Massachusetts State Titles

The Massachusetts State championship tournament was held on August 19 and 20 on the grounds of the Nabnasset Legion Post in Westford, Massa-chusetts. The sponsoring club was the Greater Lowell Horseshoe Pitchers As-sociation. Henry J. LaFrance was the tournament director and he, with the as-sistance of his crew, did a fine job.

A total of 93 participated including 24 junior boys and 6 women and girls. The juniors, women and girls have returned to our tournaments and their parti-cipation will be strongly encouraged in future tournaments.

Russ Sweeney, Quincy, successfully eluded the chase by the seven other players in Class A and emerged the state champion for the third consecutive year. A playoff game with Mel Merritt, Orange, was required with Sweeney winning 50-36. Sweeney had the high single tournament game of 76.6%,

Deborah Michaud, Fall River, won the women's championship averaging 43.3% with a high game of 60.7%. Deborah is a newcomer to our tournaments and she made her presence well known.

Bob Progen, Acton, won the junior boys championship with a percentage of 50.4 and a high game of 60.5%. David Vincent, Quincy, was a strong contender, losing only to Progen in a close game. David topped the class in ringer per-centage pitching 50.8%.

Gust Magnuson Tops 1972 Minnesota State Tournament At Duluth

Sixty-five year old Gust Magnuson, of Canby, won his first Minnesota State championship defeating Frank Stinson, Sr., Minneapolis, defending State champ in the final game of the tourney 50 to 36 at Duluth's indoor courts on Labor Day. Both players had sustained one loss each, Stinson losing a 50 to 45 contest to Larye Ambrose of Jackson and Magnuson had dropped a 51-48 decision to Marv Richmond of Pequot Lakes in game 9. Magnuson had taken a big lead over Stinson, but Stinson had come on strong until the final frame when Magnuson had tossed a double and Stinson had pitched a single and proceeded to knock off his ringer with his second shoe to end the contest. The game went 70 shoes with Stinson hooking 45 ringers to 50 for Magnuson. Magnuson had some real close games defeating Everett Peterson 50-42, Archie Anderson 51-45 and Larye Ambrose 50-46. Quickly reviewing Stinson's games, he coasted in his first three games but dropped game 4, 50-45 to Larye Am-brose when his ringer percentage dropped to 67%. Stinson moved up to 73% in defeating 17 year old Dale Lipovsky and ran into strong opposition in game 6 winning from Everett Peterson 50 to 38. In game 7, Stinson won over Richmond 52-40 with both pitchers really putting them on. Stinson got by games 9 and 10 quite handily. Larye Ambrose was awarded second place on points. He lost 51 to 35 getting 44 ringers in 72 shoes to Marv Richmond's 48 ringers. In the longest game (104 shoes) Ambrose lost a 50 to 46 decision to Gust Magnuson throwing 79 ringers to 81 for Magnuson.

Lloyd Frederickson of Wayzata, won Class B winning all 11 games with a good ringer percentage of 68.09.

Our congratulations to Gust Magnuson for winning the State championship and of course to Lloyd Frederickson and other division winners, and to all trophy winners.

Missouri State Tournament The State Horseshoe Tournament got off to a slow start due to wind and

rain early Friday morning, but after the third round things picked up quickly. The new pegs set in blocks, donated by Charles Killgore, were deeply appre-ciated.

At the annual meeting held Saturday noon the following officers were elected. President — Earl Winston, LaMonte, Mo.; Vice President — Charles Killgore, Plattsburg, Mo. The Secretary-Treasurer, James Acock of Independence, Mo., has one more year to serve. A moment of silent prayer was observed for Mr. Guy Maddox of Jefferson City; Mr. Harry Bailey of Owensville and Mr. C. C. Davis of Kansas City, all of whom passed away during the last year. Mr. Davis was a former National Champion, as well as a Missouri State Champion, and had been elected into the NHPA Hall of Fame.

The tournament saw David Baker retain his state title as well as winning the trophy given by Ray Cavin for single high percentage game — 90%. Baker never lost a game in two days play. Jerry Wooden of Ludlow, Mo. took the Class B trophy given by Winston's Angus Farm of LaMonte. Class A first, second and third class trophies were donated by LaMonte Community Bank, Ray Cavin and S C M Sporting Goods respectively. The Higginsville Horseshoe Club donated all trophies for the Junior event. All other trophies were donated by the Missouri State Fair.

In the Junior division Danny Piute of Warrensburg regained his title from two years ago by defeating the defending champion Rick Gibson of Chula.

Walt Tucker Takes Rio Dell-Scotia Class E Title (Northern California)

Although this was the first NCHPA tourney for the Roy Land led Rio Dell-Scotia club, the pitching was little short of spectacular as all four of the top contenders pitched 30% ringers and up. Walt Tucker won the championship emblem but had to average 41.4%, as Tom Webb zeroed in on the peg for a 36.1% tourney to take the second spot. Steve Bishop topped Group II by win-ning a playoff over Richard Wall. Five new NCHPA members pitched in the tourney. The Rio Dell-Scotia Club in its first full year as a NCHPA member club now ranks sixth among the 16 Northern California clubs in membership. Excellent recruiting procedures and numerous club activities planned by Club President, Roy Land and Secretary-Treasurer, Betty Mederios have been the key to their success. Zadroga In Full Blast Finish For Penna. State Crown A1 Zadroga threw an 89% game at Buck Engle in the last game and came

away with the 1972 Pennsylvania State championship. This was the first time the tourney was held at Warren, Pennsylvania and the courts were in fine condition for pitching. Clair Bruce who led the averages with 82.6% says he lost only three ringers out of 1056 shoes. Malvin Burkett showed some signs that he is about ready for Class A as he threw 68% to win Class D. In the Womens Division, Mae Kilinsky successfully defended her state title. The 1973 tournament was awarded to Levittown near Philadelphia. Levit-town has 24 new courts and is hoping for a World Tournament bid for 1976 when Pennsylvania will celebrate its Bicentennial with headquarters in Phila-delphia.

Palmer Wins 21st Wyoming State Crown Merle Palmer of Cheyenne stuck to the saddle throughout two days of State

Tournament at Riverton to win the men's State Championship with a one game loss. Twenty-one times Merle has packed the title trophy home and he might have the distinction of being the "winningest" state tournament pitcher in the N. H. P. A.

As tournament play approached the end Cowboy "Mick" Botkin of Laramie suddenly exploded with a barrage of ringers and posted a 73.5% game, a feat seldom accomplished by Wyoming pitchers. Palmer's high percentage game was 73.1.

Six pitchers participated in the Men's Class B event and the records show a mere difference of 1.7% ringers between individuals with high and low per-centages within the Class. Bob Burns of Laramie won the event and became a N. H. P. A. champ.

Herb Holliday of Riverton emerged as winner of Class C with a 9-1 record. His only loss came at the hands of Ken Honeycutt, Riverton, runnerup in the Class. Herb and members of his family took home a majority of the trophies.

Some of the Class D pitchers failed to show up at the meet and as a result only four men competed in this Class. Ed Vigil, handicapped last year by sight problems, outpointed his opponents to capture the first place trophy.

Dessie Holliday, Riverton, overcame her versatile sister, Carol Ferguson, also of Riverton to claim the State Championship in the Ladies Class. Miles Holliday, Dessie and Herb's son, took the Junior State Championship and Beverly Holliday, the 12 year old daughter, swept the Ladies Class B event without a game loss.

The Wyoming H. P. A. Constitution and By-Laws are being up-dated to con-form with the framework of the N. H. P. A. recently revised Constitution and By-Laws.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest / November, 1972

Gerald Schneider Regains California State Title Jerry Schneider of Pico Rivera won the 1972 California State horseshoe cham-

pionship by defeating Jessie Gonzales of San Luis Obispo in a dramatic sudden death play-off game following regular play at South Gate Park.

The tourney, receiving coverage from channels 2, 5, 7, and the Los Angeles Times, went off with precision, which earmarks the Southern California tour-naments, making it one of the most efficient chapters in the NHPA.

Schneider and Gonzales finished the regular round of play with identical 13-1 records, Jerry losing to Jessie in regular play and Jessie in turn losing to Ron-nie Simmons of Buena Park. The Gonzales-Simmons game went 122 shoes, longest game of the tournament, and Gonzales had high game at 90.1%. In the final analysis, however, the smooth swinging veteran from Pico Rivera was not to be denied as he won his fourth California title.

Horace Vinsant, vastly improved pitcher from Eureka, took first place honors in Class B. Ernie Knorp of Goleta garnered second place.

Fred Pearcy, veteran ringerman from La Habra won the seniors champion-ship by edging out Henry Durr of Los Angeles.

The redoubtable Walter Ray "Deadeye" Williams won the California Junior title by defeating the very capable Alvin Vinsant and brother Jeffery Williams. "Deadeye" and his brother went 112 shoes, Walter Ray with 83.9% and Jeffery with 82.1%. The "Deadeye" and Vinsant game lasted 110 shoes, Deadeye 80.9% and Alvin 80% even. "Deadeye" had a high game of 92.9%.

Lowell Speers of Buena Park, a relative newcomer to the game, captured first place in Class C. Jim Douglas of Lakewood took second spot.

Leona Anderson of Grass Valley won the State Women's title and had a high game of 73.1%. Debbie Jensen of Seaside took first place in Junior girls and Nathan Williams of Eureka won the Junior boys title.

It should be noted that John Walker, the defending state champion, although participating in the tournament was unable to play with the expertise he for-merly personified, due to a severe shoulder injury he recently incurred.

The S.C.H.P.A. announces the return of two former players, Tom Brownell of San Jose and Pat Brady of Torrance.

The tournament sponsors were the Pancake House, Arena Bowl and Sawyers Realty. We are thankful for these loyal friends.

Denver-Metro Club To Stage Exhibition And Two Tournaments

Following the annual banquet and election of officers for the Denver-Metro Club of Denver, Colorado, the following events have been scheduled for the fall and winter months.

The club staged an exhibition at the Cinderella City Shopping Center in Englewood, Colorado from October 16 to October 21. This is the largest shop-ping center west of the Mississippi. Roger Vogel (formerly of Illinois) now Colorado state champion and Gerald Labbe, six times Colorado state champion, put on exhibitions every evening and several on Saturday of that week.

The club is awaiting word from the committee in charge concerning making a bid for the 1975 World Tournament. Twenty-four new courts will be available by next summer.

There will be indoor pitching this fall and winter for the first time in the club's history, with two indoor tournaments scheduled as follows:

The Mile Hi Turkey Shoot Open, on November 24 and 25, starting at noon on the 24th. Entry fee is $8.00 and the deadline for entries being November 17th.

The Mile Hi Holiday Open on December 30 and 31, starting at noon on De-cember 30th. Entry fee is $8.00 and deadline for entries being December 22.

Qualifications from the last two 1972 tournaments must be received before the deadlines of November 17 and 22. Scores should be sent to R. W. Cheline, 4585 Garland Street, Wheatridge, Colorado 80033. Also a 5 x 7 photo and small writeup should accompany the entry for publicity purposes in the Denver newspapers.

Tournaments will be played on the indoor courts in the Jefferson County Fairgrounds which is located at 15200 West 6th Avenue, Golden, Colorado.

Bob Cheline's father, who owns the Steel Craft Industries, Inc., has made and donated a 124' (50' x 12') wrought iron railing with steel horseshoes decor-ating its entirety, to the Denver-Metro club for use in its exhibitions. Gerald Labbe, one of the new vice-presidents, has made sharp portables which will be used with the fence.

George Rogers is the incumbent president and Paul LaCrosse, a newcomer from the Mid-West is one of the vice-presidents newly elected. Bob Cheline is the secretary-treasurer.
