John Stim Memorial Event

Attached are the results of the John Stim Memorial Event, presented by the Mohawk Hudson Region

SCCA, Inc. in conjunction with the Northern New Jersey Region SCCA, Inc. This event was held on the 1.53

mile Lime Rock Park road course May 14-15, 2010 in Lime Rock, CT. The national races were run under sanction

#10-N-1064-S. The event also included a restricted regional race under sanction # 10-R-1065-S, and Round 2 of

the Team Di Pro-IT series, an enduro run under sanction #10-E-1066-S.

There were 258 cars on course divided into eight groups – 173 cars in six national races, 42 cars in the one

regional race, and 43 cars in the TeamDI Pro IT series race. National race groups one through six ran two 22.5

minute qualifying sessions (by group) on Friday, which set the starting grids for Saturday’s 30 lap races. The

regional race group ran a 12 minute qualifying session on Saturday morning, setting the grid for their afternoon 20

minute race. The TeamDI Pro IT group ran a 15 minute qualifying session on Saturday morning, which set the grid

for their 45 minute race that afternoon. Temperatures were in the high 70s to low 80s on Friday, with partly

cloudy skies. Saturday’s temperatures were in the mid-70s with clear skies, and all sessions were run on a dry

track.

The AMB transponder system was used for timing the qualifying sessions, and scoring for the races was

accomplished with three independent lapcharts. There were 15 workers in Timing & Scoring representing the

Glen, Mohawk Hudson, Northern New Jersey, New England, and New York, and Philadelphia SCCA regions.

Senior members were: Marie Sheehe, Results; Joe Boruch, Timing Captain; Judy Bloeser, Scoring Captain, and

Lenore Panas, Results Distribution.

The following ten new track records were set on Saturday, May 15th.

SOLO SOLO SOLO SOLO Report by Russ Burckhard

The Solo season is off and running. Despite the setback of having our first points event canceled, wehad a successful test and tune/school at Adirondack Community College. 28 entrants came out forsome seat time and instruction. I want to thank all of the instructors who helped out; the studentsseemed happy with what they were taught and were able to put it to good use as their times weredropping throughout the day.

Jim Garry did all of the work to set up for a test and tune at Seneca on May 8th. Unfortunately hewas not feeling well and did not attend. Ken Hurd took over for him. With help from Arne Beebe andthe rest of the competitors, they were al able to put on the event. The entrants got a bunch of runs inbefore the winds and rain moved in. The event was called off when the portable toilet was blown over.

There’s no new info on the new site I’m working on but I’ll keep all informed. The rest of the schedulehasn’t changed and I don’t foresee any besides the possible addition of an event in August.

I have been on a mission over the last few weeks to see what happens at other events. The firstevent I went to was the PDX that the Patroon BMW Club put on at Lime Rock. I wandered aroundand watched what went on over the course of a day. I sat in on the student classes and then had thepleasure of being Gene Tricozzi’s co-pilot. Besides the ride I took with DJ at our race last year todistribute water and pick up workers in his pick up, it was the first time I was on the track. Gene did agreat job of showing me the various lines as we flew around the track in his Mazda RX-8. It isamazing how fast a 20 minute session goes by when you are having fun. I am sure it is differentwhen you are driving, but I could have rode around all day. The event itself was very well executed, the workers were professional, and the classroom training was informative and relevant to the needsof the students.

Another event I went to was the AMEC speed cross that was held at the Albany-SaratogaSpeedway in Malta. It looked like a fun event and the participants that I talked to agreed. The onlynegative that I have about the event was a big one. Safety was not a high priority according to what Iobserved. I explained what I saw to the AMEC members and they said that changes will be madegoing forward at future events.

The final event I attended was the Mohud race at Lime Rock. I wish I could tell you how the racingwas, but I only saw a few minutes worth all weekend. I was pretty busy running errands and makingsure that all of the workers were fed and had plenty of water. With all of my running around, I wasable to see all of the work that goes on to make the race successful. All of the workers and stewardsmade it look easy. You could see the pride of a job well done at the after work parties. All of their hardwork is deeply appreciated. Also I would like to extend a special thank you to the Northern NewJersey Region for all of their help in the joint effort of the event.

Evo autocross school weekendat Devens, May 8 and 9 2010Five of MoHud’s Miata drivers made the trek eastward to Devens Airfield on Mother’s Day weekendfor the Evolution Performance Driving School ( www.evoschool.com ) Greg and Susan Cuda ran inthe AMEC autocross at the Malta Speedway on Saturday, then drove out to Devens for Sunday’sschool. Kevin Gebert, Will Schambach, and Tom Moeller attended both days.

The weather was much less spring-like than the MoHud test-and-tune at ACC a few weeks earlier.Saturday was in the 50’s and ranged from drizzle to downpour to thunder and lightning. Sundaycleared up, with a mix of sun and clouds, and 20+ mph winds all day long. At 7am, the 40-degreetemperature had a windchill in the 20’s. On the bright side, there was no concern of dirt on thecourse, because it had all been blown to Rhode Island. The organizers were expecting wind, asevidenced by the pair of sandbags inside each of the porta-potties.

Phase 1 had two instructors per group, while phase 2 had three instructors. Will and Tom had BruceBellom and Ken Frey leading phase 1. For phase 2 we got Pat Salerno (a partner in the Evo Schoolorganization), Heyward Wagner and John Winchester.

Five MoHud drivers brought their four Miatas for the Sunday sessions

Slalom cone split in half during Phase 1 school Saturday

Phase 1 is appropriate for complete novices, but is also a good beginning-of-the-season refresher forthose of us who can’t autocross year-round. Most of the emphasis is on car placement and lookingahead, so there are no surprises while you’re driving. The first three runs of the day are timed, thencompared with the last three runs of the day.

Phase 2 builds on the previous day’s skills, but moves the focus to mental work. The course was setup when we arrived, and we were given just one walkthrough, after having the course verballyexplained while we huddled at the start. There was also no timing – the instructors assessed each runand encouraged drivers to figure out what went wrong and fix it on the next run. After lunch, thecourse was changed slightly, three different times, which helped prevent driving from memory. By theend of the day, even without timing equipment, it was obvious that our group had all improvedimmensely.

Even though the school weekend was organized by the BMW club of Boston, there were plenty ofnon-German cars. Among the attendees, I counted 8 Miatas, a trailered Eagle Talon, and a NissanGT-R. The school hosted 55 people at 5 sessions Saturday, and 60 people at 5 sessions Sunday. There were also two sold-out phase 3 classes scheduled, but instructor Andy Hollis had to cancel.

Thanks to Steve Hazard of the Boston BMWCCA for getting the schools together, and for filling me inon some details by phone after the event. On Sunday July 11th they’re running a non-Evo school withmany of the same instructors– and Steve promises 30-50 runs. Visit www.boston-bmwcca.org formore information.
