To-d(/,~ Comp.'/'O/I. ••Welcome to Brighton and the Brighton & Hove Motor Club's

Annual Speed Trials. This year's entry list is once again to a high standard, but

does reflect on the present trend in motor sport away from theout-and-out racing cars which can only be used off the road. They are now such complex pieces of machinery that the expenseof buying them and maintaining them is beyond the pockets ofmost enthusiasts. In their place wenow find the growing popularityof the modified saloons and sports cars whose speed andacceleration become more fantastic every year.

Contenders for fastest time of the day will still come from theracing car classes. Chris Summers, the car course record holder, will be out to lower his time of 21.56 seconds set up lastyear on a slightly damp course. A strong battle for F.T.D. betweenChris Summers and Ian Ashwell on his Vincent Motor Cycle willbe a feature of this afternoon's event.

Two local garage proprietors, Ian Raby and Bill Heathcotewill have a tussle in Class 16, both driving F.3 machines. IanRaby had a successful season with his B.R.M. in Grand Prixracing last year.

Class 14 contains an unusual large assortment of Bentleys-29 in all, and each one different. This year there appears to be ahigher number of post war Bentleys than in previous years.

In Class 10 the fair set do battle for the Wills Trophy.presented by W. D. & H. O. Wills. This award bas kindly beengiven to us by this cigarette firm. It will be presented to themember of the British Women Racing Drivers' Club putting up thebest time on a handicap basis in this Class. Jacqui Smith whowon it last year is competing in a Fraser Imp. This is one of thecars raced by our President Alan B. Fraser, who has this yearpresented us with a new trophy for the best time in Class 2.Unfortunately, there are no Fraser Imp in this Class to do battlewith the Mini s.

Many fast, expensive and rare vehicles are to be found inClass 9. Bob Burnard, who has been a regular competitor atBrighton in past years, forsakes his Simca Abarth for a ShelbyAmerican Cobra, powered by a 7 litre Ford engine. Another carof note is Karl Richardson's Ford G.T.40. There is also the usualbatch of Aston Martins and "E" types.

In the smaller saloon car classes the racing Mini's andCortina's will as usual astonish us by their remarkable perform-ances. The fastest Mini's now would have been contenders forF.T.D. not so many years ago. Such is the progress of engineand chassis design.

THE FULLYTESTEDAUTOMATIC CAR IIDAF have had long experience with auto-matic transmission. If you'd like to see thecar which makes driving absolute simplicity.then visit our showrooms. And test drivethe fast and practical 1966 DAF.

''I/I , .. ,'I Ellell' • • •The 1966 Brighton National Speed Trials are the first to be

fully automated. Last year» the Diamond Jubilee of the event, acompletely new automatic timing system was produced wherebydrivers started in their own time after the 'course clear" signal, and were timed from the moment they crossed the start line.

This year, the results system has been modified. Instead ofthe results being read over closed circuit speakers to thecompetitor's results and press enquiry caravans, they will betransmitted by teleprinter installed at the start and finish.

The teleprinters, which have been loaned for the event byCreed & Company Ltd. whose main factory is located in Brighton, are their Model seventy-fives which are the smallest and lightestteleprinters in the world.

Teleprinters made by Creed are today serving more peoplein more ways than ever before. For example, the GPO's Telexservice enables businessmen to 'talk' at the touch of a keyboard-the police exchange information and track down suspects-hotelsprovide better service for their guests-car makers speedproduction. The Armed Forces, cable companies, newspapers, steel and oil firms. business undertakings of every kind. all rely onCreed Teleprinters to get information where it's needed-inminutes instead of days.
