We are glad that such a large-scale international sports competition is to be held in Ukraine, that, without

exaggeration, can be called a holiday of courage, strength and nobility.

The philosophy of Goju-ryu Karate attracts more and more adherents and encourages thousands of boys and

girls to self-improvement, promotes the upbringing of a new generation with moral and physical endurance,

confidence in their abilities and capacity of sowing grain of good. Let the Ukrainian soil be gracious for you

on the way to achieve the most important sporting awards.

Dear Karate-kas,

I would like to welcome you to the WGKF World Cup in Goju Ryu Karate and Kobudo in Odessa, Ukraine which

will take place on the 06th and 08th of July 2018, and is going to be the best demonstration of unity, friendship

and strength.

The Odessa city is exceptionally proud of hosting this great international sport event. I am sure you will all enjoy the

outstanding hospitality of the city which is often poetically called the “Sea Pearl” of the Black Sea. You will have

opportunity to enjoy the summer life of our Arcadia with its thriving nightlife and beaches and Odessa city center with

its great ancient architecture. Odessa Opera Theatre is the 2nd most beautiful theatre in the whole world. But the most

important is that you will get acquainted with good-humored and well-wishing citizens of Odessa.

Jundokan Federation of Ukraine will do its best for the excellent organization of the event - there is a superb arena

at the Odessa Sport Palace with the space for 8 tatamis and seating capacity for 5.000 spectators, which enables us to

hold the championship in 3 competition days.

We are going to have the best WUKF Championships ever! All athletes and all members of the WGKF family

deserve it. Karate is truly something special among other popular sports and is the symbol of true tolerance.

General Information

Odessa is the fourth most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism center, seaport and transportation hub located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. It is also the administrative center of the Odessa Region and a multiethnic cultural center. Odessa is often called the "pearl of the Black Sea", the "Southern Capital" (under the Russian Empire and Soviet Union), and "Southern Palmyra".

In 1794, the city of Odessa was founded by a decree of the Russian Empire's Catherine the Great. From 1819 to 1858, Odessa was a free port. During the Soviet period it was the most important port of trade in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base. On 1 January 2000, the Quarantine Pier at Odessa Commercial Sea Port was declared a free port and free economic zone for a period of 25 years.Odessa is famous for it's beautiful architecture, that combines diffent styles marking it's multiethnic status and religious tolerance.

The Potemkin Stairs are a formal entrance into the city from the direction of the sea. The stairs leading from Prymorsky Boulevard and Duke de Richelieu monument down to the sea were constructed from 1837 through 1841 to the design of the architect F. Bofford.

The Venue

The championship will be held at the national sports complex “Palace of Sports” in Odessa, http://www.dvorec-sporta.com.ua.

The venue is a multi-purpose indoor facility, conveniently located in a close to central part of the city. Parking is available at the venue.

History of the Logo

Dong Tran tells the story that Sensei Chinen told him, this is a little-known legend about the character that has become the real soul of Jundokan.

Once in China there lived a poor couple who had a daughter. They obtained their meager subsistence by processing a small piece of land and selling firewood from the nearest forest.

One day their daughter suddenly became pregnant. Being disgraced, in a fit of anger, her parents decided to get rid of the child, who was the result of an illegitimate union. Therefore, as soon as the child was born, they carried it deep into the forest and left to die. However, a few days later, they repented of their deed and returned to look at it. To their utter astonishment, they found him in full health, under the tutelage of wild animals. They took the child home, and they raised him with love. Being outwardly a normal, smart and healthy child, the boy did not say a mere word until he was sixteen. Then, suddenly, a stream of perfectly composed sentences poured out of his mouth, and he spoke like an educated young man.

After some time, the Emperor announced a nationwide examination to receive the most educated young men and the best military officers in his army, as the war was not far off. Young Busaganashi took part and brilliantly passed the test. He became a general of the Chinese army and was appointed defender of the Nine Temples of Heaven, Wind, Fire and Lightning. Once, the troops of the barbarians attacked one of the temples and set fire to it. Busaganashi used his magical breath and put out the fire, and then continued to smash the enemies. His fame spread throughout China, fueling the incredible envy among his associates. Later, he met an untimely death at the hands of a hired assassin.

Busaganashi somehow became the patron saint of Fukien Shaolin style of the White Crane, and his image on the scroll was taken from China by Master Higaonna Kanryo; This scroll was later handed over to Sensei Miyagi Chojun, who inherited Naha-Te and designed it into the modern Goju-ryu. Unfortunately, the dojo of Sensei Miyagi burned down and the scroll burned together with it during the Second World War in the Battle of Okinawa.

After the war, one of the students of Sensei Miyagi, Sensei Madambash, came to Taipei, Taiwan, and found a master there to cut out a wooden statuette of Busaganashi. He returned to Okinawa and handed in the statuette to Sensei Miyagi ... After the death of Sensei Miyagi in 1953, the statuette was transferred to Sensei Miyazato and now it serves as a decoration for the Jundokan dojo in Naha, not only a symbol of the brilliant martial arts tradition, but, what is not less important, the succession that continues to this day, beginning with the outbreak in China onto Sensei Higaonna, then to Sensei Miyagi, till Sensei Miyazato ... Approved Equipment

All protective equipment from the WUKF rules is mandatory.

All WUKF approved equipment will be accepted. All similar equipment will be accepted, provided it is not deteriorated and provides sufficient protection for the contestants, according to the Referee.

Chest protector is mandatory for women competitors.

Exception: Body protector is not mandatory, but recommended. If this is not worn, it is done on the competitor’s own risk.

Places of interestOpera HouseFirst and foremost, you simply have to visit this place. The modern building was constructed in neo-baroque (Vienna Baroque) style. The architecture of the luxurious audience hall follows the late French rococo style. The unique acoustics of the horseshoe-designed hall allows performers to deliver even a whisper-low tone of voice from the stage to any part of the hall. Shah's Palace in Odessa is a neo-Gothic building on a steep cliff at the beginning of Gogol Street. Once it was rented by the Persian Shah. The palace had been built in 1851-1852. It was designed by the architect F. Gonsiorovskiy.

A Glimpse into Kobudo Martial Art

Okinawan Kobudo Martial Art originates back to the beginning of the XVII century when Japanese samurais of the Satsuma clan occupied the Ryukyu isles and laid ban on weapons for its inhabitants. The legend says that it is then when they started to use the habitual instruments to resist the invaders.

This system can have from one to as many as a dozen of weapons in its curriculum, among rokushakubo (six foot staff, known as the "bō"), sai (dagger-shaped truncheon), tonfa (handled club), kama (sickle), and nunchaku (chained sticks), but also the tekko (steelknuckle), tinbe-rochin (shield and short javelin), and surujin (weighted chain). Less common Okinawan weapons include the tambo (short stick), the hanbō (middle length staff) and the eku (boat oar of traditional Okinawan design).

Modern Okinawan Kobudo has been united and developed into a consecutive system of studies by Sensei Eisuke Akamine, student of Sensei Shinken Taira, within Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinkokai Association with bo, sai, nunchaku, kama, tonfu, eku and tinbe being practised.
