STUDIO VJordan Consulate | Spring 2014

Jordan is known to be one of the oldest countries to the Middle East Kingdom. The treasury in Petra is estimated to be over 2,000 years old while Petra is the home to over 800 carved tombs. The structures of Petra have been weakened by the salt that is blown from the Dead Sea which crystalizes the buildings columns. Amman was established in 312 BC, making it one of the oldest metropolosies in the world. The goal is to inform people on the rich history of Jordan through the use of natural stone, desert tones, and light accents.

Mission:

May 30, 1989, the Today’s Chicago Women (TCW) Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity, was founded by the staff of TCW when they learned that less than three percent of all funding was earmarked for organizations that help women and children. The TCW Foundation fulfills a need by helping Chicago-area underfunded organizations with operating budgets of less than $1 million to provide essential programs and services. For the TCW Foundation, women and children are not a secondary beneficiary of programming...they are our only purpose. Since its inception, the TCW Foundation has awarded funding to more than 100 organizations. Funds are given to support special projects and for general operating expenses. Shelters for homeless and battered women, rape crises centers, AIDS awareness, job training, and substance abuse programs are some of the services that have recieved financial support through our grants. The TCW Foundation is an all-volunteer organization, so donors can be assured that 100 percent of their money is going toward helping local non-profits serving women and children in need. In two years, TCWF provided 60 area charities wit grants through our 30FOR30 initiative. Celebrating 30 years in publication. TCW launched the campaign in 2011 (the year leading up to the big 3-OH!)

problem and conceptMINDWomen’s life experiences, hormones, and reporductive cycle changes can influence their vulnerability to emotional disturbances. These can affect decisions about medications, therapy, and other forms of treatment. Good mental health is an important part of a woman’s overall health. Symptoms of depression or anxiety can affect the quality of life. This helps a woman enjoy life and cope with problems. If not taken care of properly, it can affect the people around you.

BODYA woman’s body recieves, nurtures, gives, produces, holds, bears, bends, grows, shrinks, and sometimes even breaks, only to rebuild. Real female strength comes from embracing the softness and solidity of every curve. A smaller body of a woman cannot simply mimic male form in the physical world. In order to perform the same feats of strength, a woman must honor her form in and of itself while determining exactly how and where to work with the perfect mix of strength and grace.

STRENGTHTo accomplish mental and physical goals, a woman needs strength. While exercising and getting the right amount of rest, it is equally important to take care of the mind. Managing stress and developing coping tool can reconnect your mind and body. A physical workout is better than any medicine and it the most powerful thing you can do to your brain.

SCOPE OF WORKThe facility will be seperated between primary and secondary spaces. The primary spaces are the exercise room which will be divided in half between a weight training area and cardivascular area, the exercise class rooms which are available for either physical activites or events held for TCW, the spa and lounge areas for relaxation. The secondary spaces include the locher rooms which consists of the steam room and sauna, the cafe, children’s play room, and the administrative and staff rooms. Both zones will accomodate social and personal functions to benefit the users physical and mental well-being.

PHYSIQUEis a wellness and fitness facility geared towards the mental and physical health of a woman. The design intent includes spaces that target the mind, body, and strength. The heart of the facility will trigger the fitness components surrounded by the group exercise activities and other functions to stimulate the mind and body for an unwinding experience.

The form of the Godfrey Hotel expresses a staggered struss structural system invented by a William LeMessurier in 1996. This system includes story high steel strusses across the full width ofthe building and staggered from floor to floor. This system is light-weight and can be erected quickly with low floor to floor height. The deep trusses allow freedom to express the program of the hotel.

From the base of the building form, it offsets three times, creating rooms with various depths. The long span trusses create a large clear space public and amenity spaces on the 4th floor.
