Tús Fhocal an Phríomhoide

A Dhaoine Uaisle Uile,Ar mo shon féin agus ar son Bord Bainistíochta na scoile, ba mhian liom fáilte a chur roimh gach duine chuig oscailt oifigiúil na scoile seo inniu. Chabhraigh a lán daoine linn an foirgneamh nua-aimseartha seo a chur ar fáil.

Today marks the culmination of almost a decade of work in transforming the previous building into a modern school of twenty mainstream classrooms, special needs’ facilities and rooms for our Centre for European Schooling.

I say a sincere thank you to all who worked to achieve today’s reality, my predecessor as Principal, Jim Gilligan, the Boards of Management ably led by Fr. John Kerrane and Fr. Joe Clavin, the Department of Education and Skills, the numerous parents who helped organize Golf Classics, our many sponsors, the staff and parents for their patience and support, the main contractors, P. Rogers and Sons, Zilic and our architect Gerry O Meara.

While a building on its own doesn’t make a school, we are delighted that the current and future pupils of St. Seachnall’s are finally being educated in the modern building and environment they, and you their parents, deserve. Our aim is to continue to match the standard of teaching and learning to the high standard of our new facilities.

Guím rath Dé orthu siúd go léir a bheidh i mbun teagaisc agus i mbun foghlama sa scoil iontach nua seo.

Ciara Whelan,Príomhoide.

the Holy Spirit.Response: AmenBishop: The Lord be with you.Response: And with your SpiritBishop: Welcome AddressFirst Reading: Clara MacCanna A reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans,

(12:6-8) St. Paul is urging us to use our talents and to do

everything as well as we can.

Each of us has different talents. God has seen to that. We must use them. For example, some of us are able to understand God’s ways more clearly than others; some of us deal with business better; some of us are teachers; some of us are speakers. Let us use our different gifts with God’s help. And so with everything we do. If we give let us be generous givers; if we are leaders let us be energetic leaders; if we are helping others, let us be cheerful helpers.

People were bringing the little children to him, for him to touch them. The disciples turned them away, but when Jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of God belongs. In truth I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’

Then he put his arms around them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing.

The Gospel of the Lord R: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

A Brief History of St. Seachnall’s National School

• The national school system in Ireland dates from 1831. The first application from Dunshaughlin to join the system came in 1835.

• An existing school run by John Hanway became the national school. A girls’ school began in 1849 in the same building as the boys’ school with Margaret Hanway in charge.

• The school was at the corner of Johnstown Lane on the grounds of the present church. It had a boys’ room and a girls’ room, mud and stone walls with five windows and a thatched roof.

• It was in poor condition and in 1886 the Inspector advised that grants should be withdrawn ‘until the present unsafe and tumble down cabins are replaced by suitable rooms.’

• A new school opened on 2nd September 1887 on land given by William Murphy. This is now St. Patrick’s Hall beside the current school.

• An old register for the Girls’ School dating from 1862 to 1884 shows that almost every family in the school depended on agriculture for a living. Over half the families gave labouring as their occupation, and other farm related occupations were shepherd, herdsman, farmer and grazier. There were also teachers, grocers, constable, steward, carpenter and tradesman.

• By 1900 Patrick Murphy and Bridget Mulligan were the Principals of the Boys’ and the Girls’ Schools respectively.

• Patrick Murphy from Waterford, was a fluent Irish speaker. He and Peadar Murray set up the Dunshaughlin Gaelic League in 1900, the first branch of the League in Meath.

• During World War 1 a number of Belgian refugees were housed in the Workhouse and some of the children attended St. Seachnall’s, but they later had their own school in the Workhouse.

• James Fox from Drumree who attended the school in 1908-11 was killed in action against British forces in St. Stephens’ Green, Dublin during the

Easter Rising in 1916. Another pupil, John Doran, died in France in the same year from wounds received in battle.

• The Principal of the Boys’ school in 1921, John Costigan, was a member of the Irish Republican Army, and during the Civil War he shot a former colleague outside what is now Peters’ public house. He spent a few years away from his job but returned in 1925 following his aquitttal by a jury.

• The separate Boys’ and Girls’ schools became one school in 1941 and by then Gerry Smyth was Principal. He was appointed in 1932 and would remain until 1973, just over forty years. He died in 2011, aged 104 years.

• In December 1954 a new school opened on land donated by WJ Murphy of Ivy House, Dunshaughlin. It is now used as the Staff Room and Library/Computer Room.

• Charlie Gallagher succeeded Gerry Smyth as Principal in April 1973 and Fr. Brendan Caffrey became Parish Priest in June 1973. Between them they oversaw an extension of six extra classrooms and a Hall in 1976.

• In 1992 Charlie Gallagher, Parish Priest Fr. John Kerrane and the Board of Management took the visionary decision to purchase Murphy’s field at the rear of the school to create a proper playground and cater for future expansion.

• Jim Gilligan was appointed Principal in September 1999 and the school continued to expand in tandem with the ‘Celtic Tiger’. The Centre for European Schooling (CES) was set up in 2002 to cater for pupils whose parents worked in the EU’s Food and Veterinary Office in Grange, Dunsany with Úna Barton as first Director.

• A major extension and renovation programme began in 2002 that resulted in three separate building phases. The main building was refurbished and extended by the addition of ten mainstream classrooms and eight CES rooms. Emmet Rogers of P. Rogers and Sons carried out the work that was completed in 2006 at a cost of €3.5m.

• Two further extensions were carried out in 2011 and 2013-14, each consisting of two classrooms and a Special Education room. Martin Blake and Zilic carried out the work.

• All development work since 2000 has been overseen by Gerry O Meara of SBA Architects and the school is grateful to him for his ongoing advice and expertise.

• Jim Gilligan retired as Principal in January 2015 and the Board appointed Ciara Whelan as the new Principal.

Pupil Reflections on St. Seachnall’sSt. Seachnall’s National School has been a part of my life since 2007 when I began Junior Infants. It has been a part of my family’s life since long before that.My mom finished school here in 1983. When she started school, junior and senior infants were using St. Patrick’s Hall because the school was too small. My granddad Leonard Morgan started school in what is now St. Patrick’s Hall and finished in the building that is now our library. My great grandmother Angela McInerney finished school in St. Patricks Hall around 1928 and my great great grandmother Mary Doran began school in the old building which was beside our church and she was one of the first students in St. Patrick’s Hall when it opened in 1887.I hope one day my children will follow in my footsteps and go to the school I had such a good time in. I met so many good friends here and am sure my family who all came here before me did too and missed it as much as I will when they all left.Olivia Flanagan, Rang 6.

When I walked thought the door on my first day in school, I didn’t know what to expect. The biggest extension of all was just finished and the school was so big I didn’t know where I was going for the first couple of years. My favourite things about this school are that there are so many different types of children and all my great friends and all the staff. I’ve been on the Green Team since 4th class and we got a green flag the first two years and we hope we can get our third green flag in 3 years and 5th overall. In 4th class I played Gaelic for the school and we got to Parnell Park and won, unfortunately we weren’t able to win another one ........yet! I love this school so much and I never want to leave. I will certainly miss it next year.Cillian Mc Cool, Rang 6.

My name is Nathan Masterson and I am a former pupil who returned this year on work experience as part of Transition Year. When I started in 2003, everything was very different. The new school we have today wasn’t there and there were lots of prefabs. I have so many fantastic memories from my time in St. Seachnalls. Whether it was playing your first match in the junior leagues, imitating mimes with Mrs. Hand or finishing in the top eight and being able to compete in the Cross Country Athletics in Bellewstown. One

12

thing that stood out for me, was when the winter drew to a close and the buds began to open this marked the beginning of football at lunch time. I can remember everyone staring at the clock, counting the seconds until we could break out the doors and race onto the lush, freshly cut green grass. While in first class in 2005, I remember the CES held a display of the foods and cultures of the different countries. That day really stood out to me as I can remember just being engulfed by different tastes, smells and knowledge. The school has changed so much since my time, the introduction of sensory circuits, interactive whiteboards, the new building and the extra tarmac space have made it a much better place.Nathan Masterson, Transition Year Student.

St. Seachnalls is a school where everyone is accepted no matter what they look like. It’s somewhere you feel safe. Everyone is so polite and very helpful. I have great memories here with my friends and with the teachers. I even found out that my third class teacher Ms. Gallagher went to a shop when she was younger called Magpies that my nan owned! When I came to this school, the biggest extension had just been finished. It took 2 years to build and it cost 3 million euro. Then in 2011 there was another extension followed by one more in 2013/2014 so the school became bigger as we got bigger. Now there are 19 classrooms in use, not including the CES and learning support classrooms. Another great thing about this school is that there are people from all over the world. This means we can learn all about other cultures. I’m really going to miss everyone next year when I leave for secondary school. As everyone gets older, they’ll realise how they love this school and realise how much it means to them too. And that’s St. Seachnalls to me.Aoife Carroll, Rang 6.

Pupil Reflections on St. Seachnall’s1st September 2007, my first day in St. Seachnalls. Finally I was going to ‘big’ school with my two older brothers. I was excited and nervous putting on my school uniform, posing for photographs with my family. The teachers were all very kind and helpful. I made lots of new friends and have some brilliant memories with these friends over the past eight years. Memories of school trips and outings, my first Holy Communion and Confirmation. I was really excited when I was old enough to play in the school gaelic leagues. My Dad was the first captain to win the school leagues in 1979. In 5th class we qualified to play in the final of the Fingal Leagues in Parnell Park. Even though we lost, it was a great experience.I am nearly at the end of my school life in St. Seachnalls. I will be very sad to leave but I will always remember the wonderful time I had wearing my St. Seachnall’s uniform. Slán agus beannacht leat.Karla Kealy, Rang 6.

The ethos of St. SeachnallsIs always up to scratch,Our teacher every year,

Covers every patch.

The soccer leagues and gaelic teams,Are always very strong

And with the help of all our parents,We all burst into song.

I’m proud to wear the Seachnall’s Crest,On the green and black school jersey,

St. Seachnalls is by far the best.In matches we give no mercy.

Ever since Junior Infants,I’ve met with such good friends,

And I’ll always remember St. Seachnalls Even when my time here ends.

Conor Gray, Rang 5.

15

What does St. Seachnall’s mean to me?There’s so many good memories

I’m sure you would agreeThat St. Seachnall’s really is the best place to be.

From the first time I walked in through the door,I knew it would be special but also lots more.

From Mr. G to the teachers, Chrissie and Ollie too,The kindness they’ve shown no one else could ever do.

Been here six years and it’s almost seven.Began school at four and now I’m eleven,

It’s not all about lessons, it’s giving and sharing,Friends I’ve made for life, that have always been caring.

So as I approach my final year,Secondary school is now near,

I’ll try my best not to shed a tear,As I remember all my happy times here.
