My name is Nate Lyman, I am a Journeymen Lineman at Garkane Energy. I live in Kanab and have worked at Garkane for seven short years. My wife and I were both born and raised in Escalante, Utah where we love to go visit family every chance we get. I grew up farm-ing and helping gather cows on the Spencer Ranch, playing sports, and loved being in the mountains. I moved to Oregon after high school where I attended a year of college and got a chance to play college basketball. If I would have known then what I know now I would have stayed in school, since now I’m in my thirties trying to earn a business degree. As hard as it is trying to do homework, work a 40 hour week, and support a family, I always find time to squeeze in a round of golf. I married Elisa Cottam in 2006 in the St George Tem-ple. We have three kids Kyan 6, Tylee 4, and Klyn 6 months. As a family we love to travel. A few places we have loved going is San Di-ego, Mount Rushmore, Wyoming and Arizona to visit family. We also love quick weekend trips to Lake Powell and St George to swim.

If your meter is not read monthly by one of our meter readers, you may not see us around very often. However, on occasion it is necessary that a Garkane employee access your electric meter or other Garkane equipment that may be placed on your property. It is very important that you, as the consumer, help us as it is stated under the terms and conditions of service, item #5 on our Membership Application: “Consistent with the Cooperative’s By-Laws, Applicant, as property owner, here-by grants to the Cooperative rights-of-way to place, construct, operate, maintain and replace power lines and equipment associated with the provision of electricity…” There are many services that are extremely difficult, if not impossible to access whether it’s because the equipment is behind locked gates, behind overgrown trees or shrubbery or near a dog that is very protective of its property. Some-times meters can even be found through a win-dow on an enclosed porch or shed that somehow gets locked! There are many different items that can block access to our equipment, so please be

mindful when stacking your wood for the winter, storing gardening and yard tools, or building a dog or cat run. We understand our equipment is not exactly beautiful, but nonetheless, we do still need un-inhibited, safe access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So if you have a meter that hides behind vegetation, perhaps you could remove or trim what is overgrown and replace it with something that allows us to get to the meter. If for some rea-son your meter has been locked in a closet or on your porch, give us a call and we would be hap-py to coordinate a time to disconnect your power so you can move your meter base to a more ac-cessible location. Or, if you have a locked gate, give us a call and we would be happy to arrange to have a Garkane padlock inserted into a chain if one is not already there. If you don’t have a chain, please give us your gate code to avoid un-necessary return trip fees. We greatly appreciate your cooperation. See you around!

5(A Lofty Goal To Cure Cancer)

As a cancer survivor himself and going through the tragedy of his mother dying of breast cancer at a young age, he made the decision to devote the remainder of his life fighting the terri-ble disease. Through his cancer diagnosis, treat-ment, and recovery, he felt a void in cancer care saying. “It felt impersonal, and for a disease in which treatment is often ongoing, it took place in environments that were cold and medical, places less conducive to healing.” In 1995, the Huntsman family pledged $100 million and donated another $125 million to construct a state-of-the-art cancer center in Salt Lake City. The Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is a world-renowned facility all thanks to a person’s decision to give back. The HCI has discovered more gene mutations for inherited cancer than any other place in the world. The breadth of these discoveries includes genes responsible for:

• Breast Cancer• Colon Cancer• Melanoma• Head and Neck Cancers• Thyroid Cancer• And many more

Jon Huntsman Sr. grew up a poor farm boy in Blackfoot, ID. Narrowly escaping death as a new-born, he would grow up to be one of the richest men in the United States. Huntsman cofounded Huntsman Chemical and turned it into a $12 bil-lion empire, employing thousands, and manufac-turing thousands of different kinds of products. Huntsman Chemical is most well-known for pro-ducing McDonalds Big-Mac containers. Jon Huntman’s story is one of being raised with no money, to making a lot of money, and in the end giving that money away. He is quoted as saying “most of us don’t have a whole lot when we are born, and I figure if I died without a whole lot, I’d break even, and that’s a pretty good re-cord.”

This rags to riches story is unique because nor-mally you hear about an individual coming from nothing to making millions, but you don’t hear about the individual giving most of it back. It’s inspiring to know that someone is willing to fight with everything he has to cure a disease that affects us all.

The results of the public hearing on December 22, 2014 in Hatch, UT reveal that Garkane’s board of directors came to an agreement to lower the residential impact fees as follows. These fees will take affect January 22, 2015.

In new subdivisions, impact fees shall be assessed to the subdivision developer. The developer shall pay the required impact fees for a minimum 100 amp service per lot. Once the lot has been sold and the lot owner requests service to the lot, the lot owner will be re-quired to pay any additional impact fee based on his/her service requirements over the min-imum 100 amp service paid by the developer. In subdivisions where the sub-divider did not previously pay impact fees, the individual re-questing service shall pay the full amount of the impact fee.

Thank you for speaking out and making your voice heard. By taking action, you joined with other concerned people from across the na-tion who sent more than 1.1 million comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Stacked on top of one another, these comments would tower nearly ten stories higher than the Statue of Liberty! This sends a powerful message to the EPA and to Congress. Without a doubt, this tremendous milesone and achievement will serve as a wake-up call to the EPA. The fight now shifts to the states, where we will continue pressing the EPA to find a common sense solution, rather than their latest proposal which goes too far, too fast. This overwelming number of comments would not have been possible without your sup-port and your voice. Affordable, reliable electric-ity is the lifeblood of every household, business, and community. At its core, the EPA regulations asks American families and businesses to pay more for electricity while using less. Local fam-ilies depend on heat and lights to keep running when temperatures plummet. Garkane Energy is proud to offer low rates and reliable service, but the EPA’s proposal jeopardizes our ability to con-tinue that mission, and we are clearly not the only utility that faces these issues. Over a million com-ments from across the country proves that. The energy landscape is changing rapidly in the United States and in the state of Utah. It is vital that you stay involved at the national level and at the local state level. Third party entities are aggressively pursuing regulation that will impact the Co-op’s ability to provide safe, affordable, re-liable service. Over the next 3-5 years, as smart appliances, home energy management systems, and cost competitive PV systems come online, so will regulation and government mandates. Gar-kane will continue to communicate these changes as they come, but it’s important to be involved in the legislative process to help shape the energy landscape that best suits our community needs.

Garkane Energy will be installing new, automated meters over the next few years to increase efficiency and reliability of our electric system. Im-proving the efficiency of both opera-tions and electricity delivery will help keep costs down for members. In ad-dition to reducing operational costs, the new meters, which can receive and send information to computers at Garkane’s offices, will help improve the reliability of the system. In some cases, we will be able to fix the prob-lem before members know their pow-er has been out. The new technology can help us monitor the electric sys-tem in almost real-time.

Improved Efficiency: Smart meters allow the Co-op to read meters remotely, reconnect remote-ly, and locate outages more quickly and precisely. Remote meter reading saves the Co-op money.

Improved Reliability: Smart meters help the Co-op identify the location of outages and respond more quickly. It also provides more information so repairs can be made more accurately.

Improved Power Quality: With more information coming from the smart meters and other new ap-plications, the Co-op can monitor the system better and improve pow-er quality by reducing the number of spikes, blinks, and surges.

It is possible to write page after page about the qualifications a candidate for the Board of Di-rectors should have. Here is a brief list of some of the most important points:

1. A director MUST be a member of the cooper-ative in good standing.

2. A director MUST be a resident of the district he or she will represent and reside within said District for at least one year prior to running.

3. A director MUST be willing to serve all mem-bers and not merely want to serve his/her own personal needs or his/her own district.

4. A director MUST NOT be involved in a com-peting business or one which sells energy to the co-op. There must be no material conflicts of interest.

Like the qualifications listed on this page, a list of duties of a director can be lengthy. Here are a few general items:

Applicants must be a member of Garkane Energy at the time of application and award and must be entering their sophomore year of college or be over the age of 25 at the time of application. Dependents or spouses of Garkane Energy employees, directors, and management are not eligible for the schol-arship award. Scholarship recipient will be selected on an “At-Large” basis among all director districts. If there are no qualified non-traditional applicants, a recipient will be chosen on an “At-Large” basis from the 2014 High School Scholarship Program ap-plications.

You probably didn’t know that when Bryant Shakespear is not engineering transmission lines, he’s taking care of his 150 beehives. As a side hob-by, Bryant keeps his hives around Southern Utah, and in the springtime will send them to California and Washington to polinate large agricultural fields. Bryant works for Garkane Energy in the Kanab office as a Planning Engineer working directly with government agencies on the new Tropic-to-Hatch 138 kV transmission line. Working and taking care of the bee-hives provides a good hobby outside his daily duties as an Engineer. He enjoys teaching his four kids responsibility as they help him take care of the bee colonies.

You probably didn’t know that when Lisa Crane is not repairing and main-taining your electric meter, she’s taking care of her beloved Alaskan Klee Kai dogs. As a side hobby, Lisa and her husband breed Alaskan Klee Kai dogs, which are similar to the miniature Alakan Husky. The Klee Kai looks very similar to the miniature husky but are classified as two different breeds. Lisa works in the Loa office as a meter technician and has worked for Gar-kane for seven years. Lisa always had a love of dogs and with her husband’s encouragement started breding Klee Kai’s in 2009. The Klee Kai comes in three different sizes. Toy is up to 13” tall at the shoulder, Miniature is up to 15”, and Standard is up to 17.5”. They also come in three different colors; grey and white, black and white, and red and white. Lisa also loves to train and enter her dogs in competitions.
