A Thank You letter was received form the Hockanum Elementary School in East Hartford. Our club member, Joe Waldron, helped find a time capsule that had been buried back in 1998. Joe was asked to find a metal box buried somewhere near the school’s flagpole and another one possibly under a rock wall. Joe said he found two plastic containers between 12”-18”, under rocks about 20” from the metal flagpole. Thankfully there were metal objects in the capsule making it possible to locate. They opened one to see how Joe got his reading. A lot of papers wrapped in some type of aluminum blanket. Joe noted that roots had penetrated the top box, but the bottom box was still sealed. There was no real history on the time capsule project as most of the people that were there in 1998 had retired or moved on to other locations and jobs. The rea-son they wanted to retrieve them was some heavy construction was about to start around the school. They were felling trees the day Joe made the recoveries. Thanks Joe for a fine representation of the hobby!

There were two new Guest Book entries on the YTC website. Tom Macdowall from Prospect, CT checked in and said “I just purchased my first metal detector and feel fortunate I've found this group. I look forward to being a member”. Don Allison from Manchester also checked in. Apparently Don was a prior member and is looking forward to joining again in the coming months. An email was received from Brian Maloney. He is a Social Studies teacher in Cumberland Rhode Island. They are trying to start up a metal detecting club and were looking to see if any of our members would be interested in helping out with donations. If you are interested in helping out, they have a website where you can make donations. https://www.donorschoose.org/project/we-dig-history/2031140/.

Meeting Minutes cont.

If you are not on our Facebook page, you are missing a lot of good finds and infor- mation

from our members. Contact Matt Dakin or Mike Stanczyc to get added.

The Members Only Section of the YTC Website is accessible by all members through one

username and password. Contact any one of the board members if you need access.

There was no new FMDAC news or Pequot update.

NOTE that the August Meeting is the 1st Wednesday of the month, not the usual 2nd Wednesday. The August meeting is being held in the Banquet room.

Upcoming Hunts There is one beach hunt coming up. The hunt at Hammonasset beach is scheduled for August 7th

and will be hosted by Dave G. Keep an eye out in future issues of the Probe and at meetings for updates as the hunts get closer. As a reminder, please do not pre-hunt the area and be mind-ful of the beachgoers “personal space” when detecting.

Roger M. mentioned that he may have a club Fun Hunt upcoming. The land is in Litchfield and is a mixture of corn and hay fields that total about 800 acres. Let’s hope Roger can work his magic!

Old Business

Any club member may attend the executive board meetings. The meetings are usually held the

week before the regular club meeting. If you have an interest in attending, you can contact any member of the board for the date, time and place. Contact information for the board members is listed in the Probe.

The club has an incentive to attend the monthly meetings and other club events. Each time you come to a meeting or event, stop at the head table and get a ticket to fill out. Every meeting you attend or other event, you will get an additional ticket. At the end of the year a drawing will be held for one ounce silver rounds.

The hats and shirt order has been in. Dave G distributed most of the orders, however he still had about 9 to deliver. Currently there are a few shirts and hats that are available for purchase for $10 each. See Dave for colors and sizes if you are interested.

Room Rental: We had to pay an additional cost for the July and August meetings so that we could hold the meetings in the banquet room. We have still not rec’d the contract for next year.

We have had some long time volunteers that have been helping with the food and drinks for the monthly meetings. Many thanks to those individuals who help keep us fed and refreshed for the meeting, Bob Brock, John Cabral & Phil Skewes. We are looking for a new volunteers to take over the duties of making the coffee for the meetings. It is a great way to contribute to the club that is relatively painless.

New Business

Richard MacRobbie, Mac, is still recovering. We are looking for donations for the Moonlight Madness hunt that will take place after the August

meeting. If you want to donate any prizes, please bring them with you to the meeting.

So far Phil Skewes donated a number of coins, Bob Brock donated a water bottle a couple of pouches and an apron and Dave G. made donations for the Moonlight Madness hunt and the Metal Detecting game. Thanks to Phil, Dave and Bob for their generosity.

Upcoming meeting programs: August – 40th anniversary party with a Moonlight Madness hunt & September – the Metal Detecting Game, we are looking for donations to fill the board. Contact Ken Faulkner if you have anything. He has volunteered to be the Master of Ceremonies. We are looking to have about 25% of the board to be “junk” and about 75% to be coins and other priz-es. September – Metal Detecting Game and raffles.

A Thank You card was received for the donation that the club made in memory of Pam Gia nn etti. The meeting topic for the evening was the detector demo day. Many members brought in their de-

tectors and accessories so that new members or members looking to upgrade could put their hands on the equipment. The feedback was very positive and many good discussions were had.

The following individuals finished various levels of the Challenge Hunts: Jeff Calzarette and Vince DiBattista completed Levels 1 & 2 and JoJo Lantiegne completed Level 2.

This is how it SHOULD be every week! By Rick Browne

28 RINGS in 16 HOURS (7 days) 9AU, 3Pt, 5AG, 5 tungsten and 6 yet to be cleaned and identified. Most likely they are

junk. One hat trick (Platinum, Gold and Silver in one day). Two rings with diamonds: 3 on one and 6 on the other. One 24K ring. I had to fight a sting ray and jelly fish for the right to detect. Great fun! Best of all: my last find was a 10 day "old" wedding band and was returned to its owner! Marriage saved. I tried to return the college ring and another wedding with no luck. The college had no record and the owner of a wedding band left without leaving their information. Other totals: 34 coins, 5 pendents, 1 pair earrings, a locket, a bracelet, a locket, and a starfish for Pan braceletdora .Something less than 25 bottle caps/pull tabs. less than 80 targets in the 16 hours (5/hour). A slow but GREAT hunt.

The following answers some questions I have been asked about the trip From the Caribbean, not a virgin spot only lucky timing between other pirates; wearing swim trunks, UV shirt and full face snorkel mask; swinging the Excalibur with a WOT coil; Cape Cod finds only one ring found THIS YEAR that was not a call out for a search – the six rings and a set of car keys I found have been returned. My bags are packed and I’m ready to go...again in about 6 months...they should have more targets and RUM by then. I am NOT adopting anyone, I have a daughter and grandson in the home right now, that’s enough. I have had better vacation totals back in the early 2000s BUT never such a fun hunt and with three women and me, I never stopped hopping! (The 3 were: my wife, sister and one of the Grand Dames of detecting). Hope this answers all questions, except maybe who is the Grand Dame?

Rocky Neck Hunt Report By Dave G.

At the end of a very hot weekend, hopes were high that the crowded beach would produce its share of

good finds. Twenty two YTC’ers gathered to try their luck (skill?), 5 or so trying waterhunting (the tide

was going out). After 2 hours, all gathered again in the parking lot to share their finds and stories.

As has been the trend, no silver or gold items were found. The ‘old days’ of such hunts were not that

long ago, when 3-5 precious metal items were found no matter where the hunt took place. Perhaps the

most interesting find was Jeff Calzarette’s bronze ‘Roman coin’ – it did look the part, and had a small

hole undoubtedly for a string or very thin chain. No ‘copy’ or ‘replica’ notation was visible.

High coin count was Bob Brock’s 35, with a number in the 20’s. Vince DiBattista (hunt master)

awarded some scratch tickets, and the remainder (total of 20 - $1 denomination) were drawn from eve-

ryone getting a numbered ticket. $12 in winnings were reported.

It was still a fun hunt (and admission turned out to be free!). This year only 3 members retreated to

Flanders Fish House for a good supper (try the Gorgonzola shrimp with a ‘side’ of seafood rice!).

Thanks to Vince for running the show and to those participating and sharing the evening.

Dave G.
