Hello dancers, Spring is upon us but it's already been hot at the LRBC. Great crowds, theme dances, music, and great friends all make for a superb evening. Are you on the train? Your esteemed newsletter editor Richard Davis can say a thing or 2 about trains. Bop in the Rock?-no!-Rock City Swing! This is our new party name just in case you missed it. Everything is up and running for registration, flyers are ready, website and Facebook all up to date. We expect an early sellout this year with only a limited number of reserved tables available. Are you on the train? Out of town parties, West Coast and East Coast dances and Are you on the Train? competitions! They are out there somewhere every weekend. We see loads of people getting hooked on these parties. LRBC regulars are attending, enjoying, competing and winning. The crowds are getting larger and it is a great way to meet new folks and know your fellow dancers better. In closing, take a look at the nice read inside on volunteering. We need you, whether is physical labor, articles for donation, or a cash donation. All of these things help make the LRBC and TBOS a better place to dance. We've had a good number of folks donate their time and just outright give us stuff. Please see any board member on how you can help. Are you on the train? We are going somewhere! First, the new kitchen is fantastic! We have use of a completely appointed kitchen with a commercial icemaker. Second, I hope you have noticed a marked improvement in our sound quality in the ballroom. Acoustic improvements, some seen and others not seen are attributed to this welcome improvement. Acoustic panels are being made and hung in both the ballroom and foyer as well. Overstuffed seat cushions in the foyer will also add tonal improvements. Speaking of which, have you noticed the new seating, Governor Winthrop desk and other improvements in the foyer??? Sadly, the expanded parking lot has hit a snag and does not allow for much in the way of happy smiles. The expansion has already consumed $15,000.00 to get it to the state it is in. the lowest bid to complete the lot is $30,000.00, bringing parking lot costs to $45,000.00. I am currently in discussion with the owner’s to find a workable alternative. Most probably, it will be graveled for now. Striping for spaces will most probably be done by us. If you know a parking lot person, please let us know.

Find Your Place Helping Your Dance Community!

Beth Plafcan & Jennifer Hughes

In the previous newsletter, our club president briefly touched on ways our members (and dedicated guests) can help us continue to improve our new facility and grow our dance community.

We wanted to elaborate further because we have so many volunteer opportunities to share with you. However, we would like to begin by sharing what has been happening at The Ballroom on Shackleford. Since our Dance Community has moved over to North Shackleford, we have been making improvements every month. Thanks to the generous donations of our community, we gave $2,700 toward the purchase of the fabulous fan, and our own members installed it. We have added sound absorbing materials in the ballroom and are creating soundboards, as well as adding other sound improving items. We now have six (5’x10’) donated mirrors hung in the foyer, ladies’ bathroom, and conference room. We have also purchased and hung window coverings throughout the building. Additional donated items include a desk, cabinet and the informational television in the foyer, as well as entry rugs, cordless vacuum, LED lighting above DJ area, and sound systems. Most recently, a donation of seating furniture for the entry foyer was made. We are so blessed to have this much support.

But we still need more help!!! Our “punch list” still has many items that need to be taken care of. Some items on the list are installing trim, up-lighting, completing the sound boards, and adding additional items in the foyer to help with sound absorption. We really need volunteer electricians and wood workers. However, if someone would like to pay for these services, it would be a great help too. We can always use help with cleaning and organization projects, decorating for special events and holidays, and participation in “work days”.

You may have heard the term CADA tossed around. CADA (Central Arkansas Dance Association) is the nonprofit organization that was created to govern the facility improvement and management. That team is comprised of board members of the LRBC, BLS and LRCD. They meet every 4th Sunday at 3pm.

If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact Jennifer Hughes. We will add you to the list and call on you in our time of need!

Here’s to our Fantastic Dance Community! (Below: New foyer seating, mirror and desk!!)
