Good afternoon everyone, and a welcome to Redding Way to the players and officials from Sheerwater, the supporters from both of today’s Clubs, plus the three match officials, for the first home League game of the new season. The close season has passed us by, as quickly as ever, plus the pre-season friendlies which have provided a platform to the big kick-off of the 2011/12 season. Today’s local derby between the two Clubs, has brought the two teams together earlier than at any other time of past seasons. When the two Clubs met last season, the points were shared in the 2-2 draw here at Redding Way, whilst the meeting at Sheerwater, produced a 3-1 win for Knaphill. This season, the opening games for both Clubs last weekend failed to gain any points, with Sheerwater losing 1-0 at home to Feltham, whilst Knaphill’s visit to League newcomers Guernsey ended in a 5-0 defeat. A scoreline that no one could have imagined this fixture would have produced. The first ever League game for Guernsey had been creating a vast amount of interest throughout the island and through press, tv and radio, also publicity of the game gaining national news coverage. Guernsey certainly gave their home crowd of 1,475 a flying start to their first League season. Following their performance on Saturday, a lot of the non-league focus will be concentrated on Guernsey on how they will be faring in the coming weeks and months. The result for Knaphill was obviously disappointing, as they conceded all five goals in the first half, two of which were gifted goals from defensive mistakes. But although containing the home side better in the second half without conceding, Knaphill’s goal scoring chances failed to produce even a consolation goal. However, that match is now behind us, a lot of matches ahead, and with a mixture of new signings and last season’s team in the current squad, let the football do the talking with goals and points! Match Report on the Guernsey game elsewhere in the programme. The 2011/12 season will be seeing more midweek matches here at Redding Way through League and Cup competition, in what will be our first full season with floodlights. Not only will we be having evening games under lights, but also no more early afternoon kick-offs with cup and league games being 3pm. There will be matches here this season, for not only Knaphill’s first and reserves teams, but Knaphill Ladies(1st and Res.) plus Knaphill Youth U18s, who start their second season in the Allied Counties League next month. We know our Cup competition opponents this season in the early rounds. In the Premier Challenge Cup 1st round Knaphill are at home to Epsom & Ewell, and in the Division One Challenge Cup Knaphill have a bye in the first round and will face Warlingham in a 2nd round tie at Redding Way. In the Southern Combination Cup Knaphill are away to Sandhurst, and of course not forgetting our first entry into the FA Vase when on Saturday 10th September Knaphill are at home to Horley Town. We face Horley Town Reserves away in the-County Cup sometime in November. Meanwhile, back to our League fixtures, and looking ahead to the remainder of games in August. Next Saturday 20th August, Knaphill will be playing Bedfont Sports here at Redding Way, a fixture brought forward from later in the season, Following that fixture, we are at home on Tuesday 23rd August when Hartley Wintney will be the visitors, kick-off 7.30pm. Four days later, Saturday 27th August, Knaphill will be away to Farleigh Rovers. Enjoy today’s game……..

matchreport Saturday August 6 2011 Guernsey 5 Knaphill 0 Combined Counties League Division One

Knaphill became the first Club to play Combined Counties League newcomers Guernsey in the opening League game of the new season on Saturday, which brought non-league football to the island for the first time. The match, which had been gaining momentum with massive interest in Guernsey’s League debut, not only throughout the island, but with national news coverage as well. But for Knaphill, it was not a good away day, as their hosts made their impact on non-league scene to prove the better side on the day to inflict a 5-0 defeat on Knaphill, the main impact coming with all the goals in the first half. Knaphill managed to contain their hosts in the second period without conceding further, but despite a bit more effort on goal, it wasn’t enough to put any respect on the scoreline. With the stage set at Guernsey’s Footes Lane Ground, in front of a 1,475 crowd, it was Knaphill who put in an early effort from Joe Turner, but Guernsey then got into their stride in the opening ten minutes, and after Dominic Hueme had a shot saved, the striker had a second chance with a header which came back off the far post in the 9th minute. The home side did have the ball in the net two minutes later but the effort was ruled offside. After 16 minutes, Guernsey took the lead. A pass across the front of goal, caught the Knaphill defence gaping at the back and allowed Glyn Dyer to glide home into the corner of goal to make it 1-0. Knaphill didn’t have an opportunity to level until the 24th minute when Chris Fox shot wide of the post, and three minutes later it was Guernsey who were looking sharp when moving forward, as they saw an opportunity to increase their lead, but Rihoy’s effort went past the post. On the half hour, Guernsey increased their lead through Ross Allen which did look suspiciously offside. After 33 minutes, Guernsey scored a third, and when a team starts to show more of a cutting edge, the last thing the opposition needs to do is make mistakes in defence. Unfortunately for Knaphill, that’s exactly what happened. Lee Gamble failure to make a clean clearance allowed Allen to nip in to score his second and Guernsey’s third. Soon after Turner did fire in a hopeful effort for Knaphill, but straight to the keeper. After 36 minutes, came the second mistake when a misclearance from Tony Davis gave Allen his hat-trick, and on the stroke of halftime, Dominic Heume slotted home the fifth goal with ease, to give the home side a cracking start to their first forty five minutes of League football. Knaphill’s second half performance was not to incur further damage as they contained the home side and stemmed the tide of the first half goal feast by Guernsey. The visitors were to show and offer up a few more efforts in the second period, and once Davis had tipped over a shot from the hosts, Ricky Hogsden went for goal, but the effort flashed wide of the far post. A further two efforts from the visitors were to be straight at the keeper. Knaphill were unable to be more lethal with their finishing, but in the latter stages, it was Guernsey who went close to find the net again, but denied, once by Davis’s save, pushed round the post for a corner, and a free kick which struck the bar. A dream start with a deserved win for the League’s newcomers, but a disappointing opener to the new league campaign for Knaphill. The players will probably acknowledge that they can do better and will put this performance behind them to move onto the next game which sees the first home match next Saturday when they receive a visit from Sheerwater in the local derby at Redding Way. Someone said to me recently did you really want to play Guernsey on the opening day of the season?...My answer to that was yes! I would rather played them last Saturday then play them away in say December. Firstly due to recent years the british weather has not been too kind to us and no doubt with all the preparation put into the trip last week it might have been undone due to a waterlogged pitch or something similar. We also might have been on a good run, gone there and might of suffered the same result as Saturday, but only might. As for the Saturday despite the result I think the whole experience for everyone who made the trip will put us in good stead for the rest of the season. I believe we were spot on with the travel arrangements, our organisation was second to none and the players behaviour was as good as it could get. As for our hosts I believe they will go on and win this division and the key to that will be their home form. Myself and Adie have no arguments about the result, we had a mad twenty minutes but overall we did not play that badly and created a number of half chances ourselves but without really testing Guernsey’s keeper. I still stand by after my match interview with the local press that Guernsey are a Ryman Premier type side. However, some people might question that after their performance against Hartley Wintney on Tuesday night but as I mentioned earlier they might not be as good on the road as they are at home and I personally think most teams in this division will come away from Footes Lane with nothing especially if you do not prepare yourself properly. Despite us doing that we were undone by two moments of madness and a goal that television replays show was clearly ten yards offside. However, I still think we were lacking in the final third and maybe the occasion got to some of the players, after all its not every week you play in front of 1500 spectators! Prior to last week pre-season has been going well and I have to say that the training headed up by our first team coach Mick Snoden has been first class. Mick brings a wealth of experience to the club and once Adie and I met him a couple of months ago we knew he was the right man for the job. This follows the departure of Neil Woodyer at the end of last season. Woody has joined up with his former club Farnborough. One thing with Mick is that he makes things simple, easy to understand and I know the players are enjoying his coaching sessions. We also have appointed Matt Edwards as goalkeeping coach. Matt joins us from Virginia Water where he was part of their management team having had a successful playing career with Hounslow Town, Egham Town, Camberley Town, Bracknell Town, Virginia Water, Englefield Green Rovers. Matt is proving to be very popular with our goalkeepers despite putting the boys through some tough sessions!. On the players front I am delighted to welcome Craig Woodley, Matt Squires, Tony Davis, Nigel Hadley, Craig Knowles, Marcus Silimane and Mark Harding to the club. Woodley, Davis and Silimane join us from today’s visitors’s Sheerwater. We tried to sign centre half Craig back in January but to be fair he stayed loyal to the Sheers until the end of last season but now he has become a Knapper, watch out for his trademark free kicks!. Tony adds more quality to our goalkeeping choice and without doubt be keeping last season’s first choice keeper Richard Shelley on his toes! Marcus has only recently returned from a serious injury to his Achilles and is lacking in match fitness and game time but I have seen enough of him in training to think he will add more quality to our striking options. Defender Matt Squires brings a good deal of experience to the club having played for Camberley Town and finishing last season at Frimley Green. Midfielder Nigel Hadley has joined us from lower league side Burpham, Craig Knowles is a former professional with Bolton Wanderers and played under Sam Allardyce during his spell there although we will not see Craig until mid August due to his coaching commitments in the US. Mark Harding has recently moved to the area having played previously at Chichester City.

I’m sure all our new signings will enjoy their time at Knaphill and help get the club where we want to be. I’m also pleased to say that most of last season’s squad have resigned with only Gavin Brainch, Jack Ball and James Wills departing Redding Way. With last week’s defeat consigned to the history books, our season now starts with the visit of our local rivals Sheerwater today. Today’s game will be a tough task as you would expect in a local derby and nearly all teams seem to raise themselves when they come to Redding Way!, Sheerwater will be no different. We will have to match them in every department and added with our own quality if we are going to pick up all three points this afternoon. Speaking of quality, division one this season is going to be even harder and I believe there will be at least ten teams challenging for the top three this season. I’m also hoping we can go on a cup run and for the first time the club will we be playing in the FA Vase, so this season is a very important one for all concerned. I’m sure we will have some ups and downs along the way but I believe this group of players we have are more than capable of getting us promoted. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed in getting the ground ready for the forthcoming season. Despite the pitch not being up to its usual high standard, something which is out of the club’s control, a lot of hard work and effort goes on behind the scenes at this club which sometimes goes unnoticed by players and supporters alike so hopefully we can deliver on the pitch and celebrate at the end of what will be a very interesting season. Lastly I would like to welcome John Cook and his Sheerwater side to Redding Way today and wish them all the best for 2011/12, after today of course!

the guernsey experience Ever since that first phone call from CCL Secretary Alan Constable back in early July to confirm that Knaphill had been selected to represent The League in the first game in Guernsey, the excitement at the club has been visible. That phone call started a flurry of emails and phone calls around the Committee, followed by introductory messages to the various parties in Guernsey who were to make our trip to that beautiful island so smooth and, apart from the result, so memorable. Friday dawned with the knowledge that the majority of the travelling party were letting the train take the strain with just the Team Management, Laura Steed (Club Physio) and Chairman Terry Chapman braving the roads to Gatwick. At 4pm, practically all the squad were queuing up to check-in their bags with the airline, when we heard of a serious accident on the M25 which blocked both carriageways. Shortly afterwards we were joined by Adie Wilson, Dave Freeman & Laura Steed who had all taken advantage of the free parking at the Gatwick Hilton, however Terry Chapman was still missing! As time ticked by, we heard that he had been behind the accident when it happened just managing to avoid it and get by before the motorway was closed!

As the door to the ATR 72 – 500 twin turbo prop aircraft closed; there was a mixed air of excitement, anticipation and in some case trepidation. The plane thundered along the runway and headed into the blue sky for the 45 minute trip over to Guernsey. Arriving at 7.00pm at Guernsey’s International airport we were met by Mandy Eulenkamp of Travel Solutions, with whom I had had many telephone and email conversations over the last 4 weeks in making sure that everything would go smoothly, and Mark Le Tissier (yes, he is Matt’s brother), the Secretary of Guernsey FC. Outside of the airport a coach was waiting to whisk the squad to the Hotel in St. Peter Port for our overnight stay.

Page 13: official matchday programme 2011/2012 theknappers · Soon after Turner did fire in a hopeful effort for Knaphill, but straight to the keeper. After 36 minutes, came the second mistake

Arriving at the Les Rocquettes Hotel which incidentally was built in 1765 as a country house and since 1946 has been run as a hotel. The rooms were excellent, although each being a twin we all, except Laura, had to share. Every-one took sometime out to explore the hotel with its indoor swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi & gym – all available free of charge, to the bars, lounges and dining rooms. We had booked tables so we could all eat together that evening and the quality of the food was fantastic. Once the meal had been cleared away it gave every-one a chance to chat and get to know each other, as new coach Mick Snoden as well as some of the players were making their first appearances for Knaphill. As the night drew to a close everyone withdrew to their rooms to get a good night’s sleep.

Saturday morning dawned with overcast skies, but a buzz of excitement running through the hotel as players and management relaxed around the pool. Football journalist Andy Ollerenshaw together with photographer David Bauckham joined the party to record the day’s events for various publications. The coach arrived at 11.00am to make the relatively short journey; most journeys are fairly short on the island, to Footes Lane, the stadium built for the Island Games. With its 700 seat stand resplendent with hospitality suites and a media room certainly looked the part on first viewing. The squad crossed the running track and took their first steps onto the pitch, which looked like it would suit playing the ball on the deck. As the stadium slowly started fill, estimates were of up to 4,000 people attending, the local TV, radio and press arrived looking to interview every-one before the 1.00pm kick-off.

A report on the game can be found elsewhere in this programme and I do not think there is any need to dwell on the result further. The ground was buzzing after the game as the 1475 spectators filed away, I was called upon, along with Terry & Dave, to conduct a number of media interviews stressing the positive points of our performance and being gracious to the opposition who had indeed played well. Once every-one was ready we strolled over the nearby Hockey club were a hot meal and refreshments were made available. Mark Le Tissier made a speech thanking all concerned for the all their efforts both on and off the pitch, and Terry was presented with a commemorative ceramic Milk Churn as a memento of the day. At 4.30pm we trudged back to the coach for the 15 minute journey back to the airport where our plane lay waiting the quick hop back to the mainland. Once back at Gatwick the mobile phones were quickly switched back on to ascertain the results from elsewhere in the CCL. It didn’t take long to work out that Guernsey were sitting proud at the top of the table and that Knaphill would have to haul themselves all the way from the very bottom of the table during the rest of the season, which starts to-day against Sheerwater. I wouldn’t have missed the weekend for the world and I am immensely proud that Knaphill FC will always be in the history books as the first, the result – well let’s put it down to experience.

sheerwaterfc Sheerwater Football Club was formed in 1958 and founded by the late John French. Sheerwater joined the local Woking & District League.Sheerwater progressed through the Divisions to obtain Intermediate status in the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) in the 1967-68 season. This enabled the club to progress to a senior level, playing in the Combined Counties League for a number of seasons. In the 1982-83 season Sheerwater joined the new Surrey County Premier League which was formed for those Clubs who could not fulfil the Senior criteria. Sheerwater were relegated after a number of seasons in the Surrey County Premier League to the South Eastern Intermediate League, which was the only space made available to the Club. Sheerwater were then determined to either gain promotion or move to a more regional Intermediate League. They were granted two sideways moves, firstly to the Surrey Combination League and then moved to the Surrey Intermediate League (Western). In the 1991-92 season Sheerwater gained promotion back to The Surrey County Premier League but were relegated once more but were granted a pass back to the SCPL due to a wrong decision to relegate the Club the previous season. In 2002 the Surrey County Premier League was disbanded as all the Clubs and League officers had decided to join the Seagrave Haulage Football League, forming the new Division One League for the season 2003-04. The League has now a new sponsor so the League is now known as the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League. Last season Sheerwater finished 17th in the league. The club are proud of achieving 50 years in football and celebrated this occasion on Saturday 22nd November 2008 with over 270 guests at the H G Wells Conference Centre in Woking Town Centre. inreserve with reserve team manager andy martin

Our goal at Knaphill FC is very simple, we want to develop a Reserve squad in which that all players are able or have the potential to move into our 1st team. Having run an U18 Youth team in the Allied Counties League from last season, this highlighted the fact that a number of youth players played regular Reserve football as well as a few getting 1st team squad experiences. The two that stood out were Jack Ball (now at Premier Division side Sandhurst Town) and even better Joe Turner who not only established himself as a regular in our 1st team, but was voted Player of the Month whilst playing for the 1st team and scored one of the goals of the season at Frimley Green. Ideally we will look to get a balance in the Reserves of players with 1st team potential, as well as experi-enced players who will form the backbone of the side and who can help develop the younger talent we have at the club. Knaphill FC are looking to develop the Reserves by potentially moving to a different, higher standard league to provide a tougher challenge for the youngsters coming through, as Knaphill FC looks to progress all their teams to a higher level. This year the Reserves have had three pre-season friendlies so far – the first being an end to end game at Mole Valley SCR Reserves (Suburban League) where despite goals from Pez Coles (2) and Franco Puzzrullo the final result was a 3-5 defeat. The second game came against Ripley Village Reserves (Surrey Elite Reserves) which was a stern test against a well organised side and a 1-1 draw ensued with Kierron Garston scoring for Knaphill. The game against Shalford (Surrey Intermediate) was called off due to an unfit pitch. Last Saturday’s game saw a match against Royal Holloway Old Boys, again from the Surrey Intermediate League. Our new signings Pez Coles, Shane Cummings, Tony Kavanagh, Lennie Harding and Nigel Hadley all impressed in a comfortable pre season victory. Coles worked well with Cummings and finished from the edge of the box to give us a deserved lead after 20 minutes plays. Royal Holloway equalised with a good set piece just before half time. Coles, Cummings and Halona Mesemba continued to cause problems for the Holloway defence and Coles finished well to make it 2-1 after 55 minutes. Lennie Harding, then slotted home with some class to make it 3-1,

and finally Connor Hill made it 4-1 soon after to complete a good performance for our young side. This season’s CCL Reserve League sees Knaphill travel to Raynes Park Vale on Saturday 13th August with home games against Worcester Park Reserves and CB Hounslow Reserves on the following two Saturdays. This season Knaphill Reserves aim to be competing at the top of the table and having a few good cup runs thrown in as well! chatfrom thechair with chairman terry chapman

Well here we are again another season and another summer break gone without realising it. Today we welcome Sheerwater F.C. to Redding Way. It is always a pleasure to once again test our club against local opposition. A warm welcome also to Trevor Wenden, I always look forward to his banter and enthusiasm for his team. You will already know that we played Guernsey F.C. in our first league game of the new season. Well the experience was magnificent but the result was very disappointing. We lost 5 0. But we did manage to draw the second half. Please note all you Division 1 teams of the Combined Counties they are a very slick outfit. We were not overawed we were just out played by a very fit, organised and definitely superior team. I would like to say now that all the teams in our division are playing for second and third place. I must say that teams travelling to Guernsey will have a good time. Our hotel, food and travel were exemplary. We travelled out on Friday so having a 1 o’clock kick off on the Saturday. We were back into Gatwick by 7pm. May I say how pleased I am with our team. They behaved impeccably and were a credit to the club and to the Combined Counties League. A very good choice by the league, the standard has been set. Moving on, this season is all about promotion, without putting too much pressure on the team and management this has to be the year. We have spent money on the ground and new training and playing kit. The ground is now up to standard for the F.A. Vase and will be improved further for the F.A. Cup and the Premier Division. I know we are close to having the squad we need. We just need a bit of luck and performances of high quality. I am confident in Adie and Dave to deliver this season. Mick Snowden is our new coach. I haven’t spent much time with him so far as I like the management team to sort out the appointments. Mick has experience and knowledge and he will be a very important part of the promotion cog. Early vibes from the players are that they have confidence in him and in the way he works. You will know that we have drawn Horley Town F.C. in the F.A. Vase. This will take place at Redding Way on Saturday 10th September. We are keen to do well in this fixture and so between now and that date I want everybody to promote this game. I want a bumper crowd and our biggest gate ever to be broken. I also have to tell you that Dougie Ford has resigned from the club. His job as Youth team manager is therefore available. This is a blow to me personally and a massive blow to the club. Dougie has worked tirelessly for Knaphill Youth. He will always be welcome at this ground and will always been known as the instigator of Youth Football at this club. I would like to wish him well and thank him for his input. Finally please try to help this club both on and off the pitch we need your support and we need your money making ideas. This club is only at Step 6 but it takes over £20,000 to run. We are on an upward only mission so let’s all do our bit. Terry
