A WARM WELCOMETonight's game with Hunslet Hawks brings us the first oftwo rearranged fixtures which came as a result of ourfantastic Ladbrokes Challenge Cup run.We welcome the Hawks, their Directors, staff, players and supportersto LSV this evening. Coach Barry Eaton has a well drilled group whoseleague position does not mirror the performances and close resultsover the last few weeks. With livewire half back Andy Kain and youngLeeds Rhinos starlet Jordan Lilley, this evening’s encounter will be aninteresting challenge.

FEELING THE LOVEThe cup run came to a dignified end at Warrington where aquick-fire 10 minutes after half time put us in a catch-upposition which despite close encounters we simply could notovercome.Whilst disappointed, the performance from the lads gained enormouspraise from many quarters, with the huge travelling army ofsupporters also received glowing tributes from the RFL andWarrington Wolves. Once again the Club from top to bottom thankevery single one of you for your support.

In fact, there was an amusing moment when whilst beating themighty Wire at half time, the 4,000 plus strong Leyther Army sang'Are you watching Super League?' SLE General Manager Blake Sollywas sat to our side prompting Chairman Mike Norris to quip: 'Theymean you, Blake!', which brought a warm smile and resounding nod.RFL Chairman Brian Barwick, a man who knows a few things aboutTV and the importance of a quality product for the viewing audiencewas also glowing in his praise at half time, confirming 'This is TV gold,superb, this is what we want to see'.

THE REAL LEIGHSo yes, we won some friends which is what we always knewwould happen once people saw us live rather than simplyreading social media and the array of angry letters in thetrade press!However, as a club we are bored to death of the savage media attacks

which we have faced over our supposed 'thuggish' tendencies fromthe players and have made our feelings known at every level. TheWarrington game showed to 2 million people that we are more thancapable of controlling our aggression and playing fast open rugby ifwe are allowed to and our players are protected by the officials.

We have lost just twice this season fair and square, in both gamesthere was not one unsavoury incident. A quicker game brings greaterentertainment, that’s all we ask for - the opportunity to entertain andthe referees to protect the players.

LEIGH CENTURIONS GOLF DAYTuesday 16th June brought our annual Golf Day sponsoredby Preston Audi, O2 Leigh, Maxilead, and CS Civils.80 golfers took to the Houghwood Hall Course in bright sunshine,with the BBC Northwest Tonight cameras in attendance in another oftheir 'behind the scenes' episodes.

Head of Rugby Derek Beaumont also attended in the afternoon withnew singing Mathias 'Eric' Pala who had arrived earlier in themorning. The drinks cart was driven by Ryan Brierley and AdamHigson, bringing welcome refreshments to the teams during theafternoon.

Closing the event was Mike Latham, who hosted an evening BBQ andAwards Ceremony. The Team Winner of this superb event was securedby Preston Audi. It was a wonderful day in a lovely setting andeveryone who attended enjoyed the day which was a resoundingsuccess.

AND FINALLY...Best of luck to Fuifui Moimoi who has just released hisautobiography and will be signing copies of the book afterthis evening’s game. Hopefully Fui will have several more chapters to add about his playingcareer at Leigh and will be issuing an updated version in years tocome having achieved his dream of seeing Leigh Centurions reachSuper League and become established at the top level.

DP: WELL CAN YOU SUM UP YOUR THOUGHTSON THAT GAME?

PR: We certainly didn't want to come here and be gallant losersbut that's what has happened, but the thing we've learned from itis that we can compete with top end Super League, as well asmiddle, as well as bottom, no matter who we play, ore beat, we'dget that question about yardstick, so I think that's a prettycomfortable yardstick for us. I thought there was two equallymatched sides out there.

We won't complete so low all season. We gave Warrington anawful lot of possession on plays one and two - that's where we willkick ourselves, you might talk about lessons learned and therewasn't really a lesson there because we already know, the lessonfor us is that we can compete against the likes of Warrington, sothat should be something we take forward in our confidence andback into our own competition, the Championship although we aregutted to be fair.

PRESS QUESTION: THERE WAS THAT SPELL JUSTAFTER HALF-TIME WASN'T THERE PAUL?

PR: Both teams employed similar tactics, we kind of knew whatthey'd do. Basically both sets of backs were doing a lot of workaround the middles; getting them tired. We saw Warrington dipdrastically towards the end of the first half. Then, we went soft inthe first ten minutes of the second half, you chuck that in with adodgy decision about a play-the-ball, that's not a criticism of thereferee, I thought he was outstanding; Richard Silverwood had areal good game, that's what you get, they were just a bit too farahead for us; it's then ifs and buts, but that is what sport is. Wegave ourselves too much to do, but we showed what we could doif we wanted to apply pressure.

I don't think we had any, or hardly any good ball sets in thatsecond half - we chucked one shape at them and scored. We area very, very capable side and I would summarise it by saying thatwe missed a good opportunity.PRESS QUESTION: THE RESULT ASIDE, TO BEINVOLVED IN A GAME LIKE THAT, TELEVISEDLIVE ON THE BBC, HOW GOOD IS THAT FOR THECLUB?

PR: It is good for the club. I think you've seen there, with thelevel of support that we've got, days like that bring awareness towhat is going on at our club. It wakes up any sleeping Leigh fansand it galvanises the club, which in turn galvanises the town.

I always said when we started off on this journey that we want tomake an impact on our community and therefore that's anotherbox ticked I suppose, you just want to see pride and passion andcommitment, you then chuck in a load of endeavour and skill andyou get the Leigh team. Unfortunately for us, our execution was alittle bit off at times and we handed them too much possession.

People ask will we get away with that style of play against betteropposition, well I suppose it's shown, it's not lack-lustre, it'sperfectly planned and managed and we know what we are doing;so if we execute right, no matter who the opposition is, we'll stickto our philosophy and our brand, which for the purest rugbyleague supporter, is good to watch. DP: AND AS YOU'VE ALREADY SAID WITH THESIDE MISFIRING SOMEWHAT AND THEEXECUTION, YOU STILL CAME UP WITH FIVETRIES?

Exactly. We didn't manage to kick our goals did we? TheWarrington kicker kicked some crackers to be fair didn't he? Wewere one try down on them which really shouldn't have been atry if we want to look at it like that, but I don't want to. I don'twant to take anything away from Warrington, that's sport, theywere two evenly matched sides - that's the key - ultimately theycame out on top. It's sometimes a game of small margins andthey got it. On behalf of our club we wish them all the best inpursuit of Challenge Cup victory again in the next round. I've gota lot of respect for Warrington, but I'm sure that anyone whodidn't have, will have respect for us now!

ML- Reflections on the game?OW - We were very disappointed not to come away from the gamewith something. We completed at 58 percent for the whole of thegame and it doesn’t matter who you play, you’ll struggle to wingames with a statistic like that. They are a top Super League side andwe competed well and could have put them to the sword. The gamewas all about fine margins but we were architects of our owndownfall. I didn’t feel like we were beaten by a side better thanourselves but by our own mistakes. They are about quick plays andforcing errors but we more than matched them for all parts of thegame bar that awful period early in the second half.

ML- Kevin Penny’s second try was sensational wasn’t it?OW - It was fantastic but AJ’s last year would give it a run for money.Maybe we could have done a bit more to stop it as it wasn’tundefendable. But it was a marvellous piece of athleticism and showsjust what fantastic athletes play the game. Some of the skills ondisplay in that game from both sides were remarkable. Some of thetries we scored were up there with anything you see in RugbyLeague.

ML - Overall the Club’s run in the Challenge Cup wasmemorable wasn’t it?OW - It was and if history repeats itself Warrington will emulateLeeds last year in defeating us in the quarter-final and going on towin the competition. Everyone at the Club can be proud of theirachievement, beating an ex-Super League side in London Broncos,then two Super League sides in Salford and Wakefield along the way.It was a big day at Warrington and showcased just what LeighCenturions are about to the country watching on BBC1. We attractedthe largest crowd of the weekend in the Rugby League and it showswhere the club has come from and where it can go in the future. A lotof credit for that goes to Derek Beaumont for all he has done to

galvanise the club and the backroom staff and of course thesupporters for buying into it.

ML- And seeing the terrace packed with 4,000 Leigh fanswas a fantastic sight.

OW - It was incredible. In all the years I’ve played the game I’venever experienced anything like it. After one of our tries, I think it wasthe Gregg McNally one, I walked back to my mark and the noise ofthe fans was deafening. I could feel the roar behind me- it was like asound-wave hitting me full-on.

ML- Ashton Sims’ ‘player-mic’ made for good viewing.

OW - It was quite funny wasn’t it? Suddenly just because he had amic on he became one of the nicest guys on the field. He is afearsome proposition on the field but a good guy and the way hecomplimented Ryan and Jake afterwards on their displays was reallygood. It was amazing feedback coming from a top Super Leagueplayer to two Championship players and underlined how well theyeach played and how well Leigh played. The whole of the BBCcoverage was second to none. There were lots of fresh faces andideas in there and it made for great viewing and a refreshing change.The Club got some really good and positive publicity from the BBC’scoverage of us in the Wakefield and Warrington games.

ML - Back to league action in July and six games in theChampionship before the start of the Super 8s.

OW - Yes and we will approach every game with the same attitudeand thoroughness we approached the Warrington game. We’ve got abig squad and there will be some rotation so everyone is fresh and onthe ball. We pushed a top Super League club close but we didn’t winand we have to keep our feet on the ground. We have to focus andwork hard because if we don’t the Championship is so competitivewe will come unstuck.

I have been writing about Leigh since I was a teenager andwas a fan long before that. My dad is a Centurions LifeMember and long-serving kitman. My mum Christine andauntie Jean travel home and away watching Leigh as didtheir parents Les and Irene before them.My wife Claire, however, is a dedicated Warrington fan. Not only isshe a season ticket holder who goes home and away, she is also onthe Warrington Squad Builder Committee. Claire works for DownUnder Leisure, the NRL superstore in Wigan. There’s a lot of rugbywatched between us.

We met through rugby league and happily went along to each other’sgames. In fact our second date was at Batley. Our eyes met across thecheesy chips. As a couple we attended loads of games all over the RLNation, even a Challenge Cup Final.

From my point of view, it was a nice change to go to a game withouthaving to take my laptop. For Claire, as a Super League fan, venueslike Mount Pleasant and the South Leeds Stadium offered a strangefascination which bordered on morbid curiosity.

We married on May 31, 2012 a day when the Olympic torch was inWarrington. Almost inevitably, our wedding reception was held at theHalliwell Jones Stadium and we received cards signed by the Leighteam and Claire’s hero Adrian Morley. Our seating plan featuredtables named after Leigh (Rowley, Turley, Murphy, Woods, Drummond)and Warrington (Morley, Hicks, Briers) players.

For our honeymoon we headed for Sydney with the second State ofOrigin game at the ANZ Stadium the centrepiece of a packedfortnight which included seven NRL games. Wearing our respectivecolours, we visited some of the iconic venues of the sport such as theLeichardt Oval, the WIN Stadium and the Brookvale Oval.

It was a lot of fun living in Sydney’s rugby league bubble. I will alwaysremember talking to Ian Millward’s agent and dad Bob in aWollongong restaurant where their biggest concern was whether theMoonraker pub in Leigh was still open.

Friends would sometimes joke what would happen if Leigh everplayed Warrington and we laughed it off while there was a bit of uswhich genuinely feared such a thing.

Our first son Harry was born in 2013 and had Warrington and Leighkits bought for him weeks before he arrived. He visited the groundsof both teams when he was just a few weeks old. When Leigh andWarrington met in a friendly early last year he wore a Wolves shirtand Leigh shorts.

As Leigh’s stock began to rise, winning the Championship in 2014then topping it again this year, Warrington looked to be going in theopposite direction with their performances swinging from the sublimeto the ridiculous.

time since Claire and I got together became shorter after Leigh upsetSalford in the Challenge Cup, setting up a tie with Wakefield.

When Centurions were getting battered in the first half, the danger ofa Centurions v Wolves match-up was fading fast. But we all knowwhat happened after that with Leigh storming back for a second winto be filed under “giant-killing”.

As the reporters stood around in the Belle Vue press room waiting forthe quarter final draw, I told them that Leigh would draw Warrington.

And of course they did. Claire was watching too, at home with ournewborn son Samuel Thurston (named after the Queensland half-back) and her Warrington supporting sister and nieces.

I looked to the ceiling and puffed out a heavy sigh when this dreadedtie was confirmed. A FaceTime conversation followed when Claireheld up her Warrington mug to the phone. I won’t tell you exactlywhat I replied with, but it’s a well known terrace chant which seemsto upset Wolves fans. The battle lines were drawn and I’d not evengot in the car to drive home.

The chat that night was playfully polite though occasionally escalatedinto what is annoyingly referred to these days as “banter”.

It turns out Warrington fans don’t like it when you remind them Leighwon the league more recently than them.

With the cup tie so far away, it drifted into the background thoughMicky Higham’s move back to Leigh threw some petrol on thebonfire.

As the Super League club, the pressure was all onWarrington - and therefore Claire. A Warrington win andnothing changes. A Leigh win and the house would bepainted red and white. It seemed like a fair deal. Hopefullynext time!

Serbia TourMiners’ Tony Doyle recently led the England Lionsas vice-captain on their tour of Serbia. Tony, whowas joined by coach Mick Blakeley and team-mate Darryl Appleby on the two-match visit tothe Balkans, sent this update from their timeoverseas:It was good to be selected, it was a reward for the effortsof the previous season playing in the North West CountiesLeagues and although that’s a few levels below NCL it’sstill a great thing to be recognised for having a goodseason. The programme they are now running gives ladsplaying at lower levels of the amateur game theopportunity to tour every year and experience theinternational set-up and what comes with a tour. Myfamily, colleagues and the kids I work with were made upthat I had been selected.I really enjoyed the rugby side of the tour. Serbia are anemerging nation as far as rugby goes but they absolutelylove the game and their knowledge of the British game isspot-on. The matches were very physical, as you canimagine their boys are pretty big and aggressive so theyliked to dish out the biff. The Test match was a close gamefull of scraps and was a good contest, they can actuallyplay a bit of footy and have clearly been watching theSuper League but they also knew a bit about the amateurgame and are keen to learn more and link up with theEnglish game. We won the warm-up game with 50 against a Belgradeselect but the second against the full Serbia team was areal humdinger and we only won by 2 points. I enjoyedplaying, it was a lot different to what I’m used to, you hadlads from NWC Division 4 playing with lads from NCLPremier so finding the balance of ability was a test but Ithink we managed to find a system that worked andoverall it was a real success.Serbia is beautiful, a really nice country especially inBelgrade the place was buzzing; it’s obviously still on therecovery from the Yugoslavia war in some parts but themajority looks really nice. Roughly 90 pence a pint andyou could get a good two course meal with a drink forless than a fiver. We also visited an orphanage and school fordisadvantaged children while we were there and on apersonal level that was a highlight of the tour for me. It’svery similar to the job I do now and I was asked to dosome work on the visit which went down a storm. The kids loved it and I gave away some kit and clothesand they were chasing me back to the coach for photosand allsorts, it was a real eye opener and makes yourealise how lucky we are.

In a fixture rearranged due to the Cup exploits of theCenturions, Leigh welcome Hunslet Hawks to the LSV as theylook to continue their unbeaten home record. When the two sides last met on Good Friday at the South LeedsStadium, Leigh ran out 42-6 victors in poor conditions thanks to asuperb second half showing after only leading 6-0 at the break.

A lot of sides have found Hunslet a tough nut to crack, particularly ontheir own patch, and have run some of the top sides close. Backed bya Dual Registration agreement with the Leeds Rhinos, the Hawks havealso earned five wins which for a side who where only promoted tothe Championship this season is an admirable achievement.

Barry Eaton’s side may be one which is fairly reliant on its partnershipwith neighbours Leeds, but it is one which has a blend of experienceand youth, and one with plenty of Championship know how.

Vinny Finigan has been plying his trade in the Championship since2011 with Sheffield Eagles, Dewsbury and Batley before joining theHawks. Finigan in his days with Sheffield won the 2012 Grand Finaland was on the score sheet as they defeated the Centurions in the2011 Play-Offs. Blessed with pace and the ability to finish any givenchance, the Winger is a real threat on the fringes, as is formerWarrington man Richie Barnett. A man with vast experience, hisleadership and experience could be more of a positive factor for theHawks than his undoubted ability.

Ex Featherstone Half Back Andy Kain adds direction to the Hunsletoutfit. Leigh fans will know how affective Kain can be having been anintegral part of the Rovers side which battled Leigh on manyoccasions.

Captain Jack Lee will also be a man Barry Eaton will turn to for onfield leadership. The hooker, who has had spells at York, Featherstoneand Castleford, is a creative spark from dummy half who will createchances from any quick play the balls that fall his side’s way.

Playmaker Danny Grimshaw featured against the Broncos havingrecently returned to the club after a short spell with Featherstone. He,like Kain and Lee, will hold the key to any Hunslet result as they arethe sort of players who create the chances for the likes of Barnett andFinigan to finish.

The link up with the Leeds Rhinos has allowed Hunslet to field anumber of talented players including the likes of Jimmy Keinhorst andBrett Delaney. Winger Luke Briscoe has featured heavily for the Hawks

this season and was their sole try scorer in the game over Easter. If hewere to feature he could add real vibrancy on the flank especiallywhen he ducks inside from the right.

Leigh will have to be on the guard to avoid what would be a hugeupset. This could be quite an intriguing game if the last meeting isanything to go by. Let’s hope for better weather this time around togo with an equally positive result.

RESERVES 2015LEIGH CENTURIONS

Leigh Centurions Reserves ran in eight tries as they earned anexcellent 42-12 victory against Sheffield Eagles at SheffieldHallam University. Paul Anderson’s side swiftly recovered from a delayed journey over thePennines to surge into a 32-0 interval lead and maintained theiradvantage in an increasingly scrappy second half. “It was a really good team performance and I was very happy with theside,” Anderson said. “We got delayed on the way across and the journey took three hoursso we had to quickly get changed and had time only for a ten minutewarm-up, so the preparation wasn’t ideal. “But the lads began the game really well and we scored some goodtries.” Kurt Haggerty was the stand-out performer for the Centurions and MattSarsfield continued his comeback with a strong game in the secondrow. “Kurt was outstanding and did the job we asked him to do,” Andersonsaid. “He got plenty of game-time and was brilliant for us, running overpeople and showing a great skill level too on the edge. Sarsy did welland I thought Eze Harper had a strong game too, but then they allplayed well. “We picked up a few knocks and had two players sin-binned in the

second half so we were down to 11 men at one stage. But after goinga while without a competitive game it was good to put in a goodperformance and secure the win.” The tries were shared between eight players with Tyler Whittaker, SamBaggaley, Eze Harper, Jacque Peet, Jack Hansen, Brad Smith, Elliot Likuand Kurt Haggerty all crossing and Hansen tagging on five goals. MitchVincent, Connor Scott and Adam Newby scored tries for the Eagles. 2001Leigh Centurions had finished top of the Northern FordPremiership, but they suffered a shock home 15-14defeat to Oldham in their play-off preliminary semi-final.The Centurions walked away with the league, finishing ninepoints clear at the top after losing just two games in the regularseason. That gave them the perfect opportunity to book theirpassage to the latter stages, but Oldham - who ended theseason in fourth spot some 10 points behind Leigh - had notread the script.Masterminded by player-coach Mike Ford, Oldham forced thehome side into a catalogue of uncharacteristic errors to becomethe first team to win at Hilton Park for 15 months.Leigh scored three tries to two as they overturned a 9-0 half-time deficit to lead 14-11, but a fine solo effort from MarkSibson 16 minutes from time proved to be the winner.“We didn’t play to our potential against Oldham so the playersare now aware that anything other than their best will not begood enough,” admitted coach Paul Terzis.

2010Leigh Centurions went down 34-26 in a top-of-the-table Thursday night clash at Featherstone Rovers,deservedly claiming a bonus point with ten late pointsin a thrilling encounter.In the first quarter, Rovers built an into an 18-0 advantagebefore being pegged back by a spirited effort from the visitors.Rovers opened the scoring through Zak Hardacre to score andadded further tries by Kyle Briggs and Liam Finn in adevastating opening.The Centurions got on the scoresheet when Martyn Ridyard cutthrough to score a converted try and then Lee Mitchell wentover. Robbie Paul then created a try for Jake Emmitt with asmart kick but Andy Kain sent Dane Manning strolling throughfrom close range with Briggs adding the goal for a 24-16Rovers lead at half-time.Sam Smeaton extended Rovers’ lead with two tries and seal thegame, Briggs taking his tally to five goals. But Leigh fought backspiritedly with a Matty Blythe try from fully 60 metres after hecharged down a kick. The visitors claimed a deserved bonuspoint when Dave McConnell grubber-kicked to the line andTommy Goulden was awarded a try by the video referee whichRidyard converted with his third goal.The Leigh team was: Donlan; Maden, Blythe, Leuluai,Stanton; Ridyard, Paul; Emmitt, McConnell, Bibey, Taylor,Mitchell, Armistead. Fun DayIn May the club hosted its annual fun day and itturned out to be a tremendous success. East’s talented young crop of players were joined by HeadCoach Paul Wingfield, Club Captain Dean Balmer and exLeigh East and Leigh Centurions favourite James Taylor, whokindly gave up an afternoon to present trophies and meetvarious teams and age groups from across the county.

Donations were greatly received from Leigh Centurions andvarious other local businesses,which were raffled or auctionedoff on the day. It was an early start for all the volunteers butwith a glorious afternoon of sunshine, a barbecue and plentyof drinks on hand the day ran smoothly. A lads against dads match was also staged and the spoilswere shared. Although it probably took the dads a lotlonger to recover than it did the lads.

Playing MattersWith over 35 under 7’s players now registered NikiHowarth and Wayne Robinson have decided to runtwo U7’s teams. A cubs team for more junior players has also been been setup and ex Leigh favourite Lee Hansen is assisting keithLathom with some fantastic starter training sessions, whichthe kids are throughly enjoying.Both open age teams are riding high within their respectivedivisions and the under 18s currently sit second in Premier 1.All fixtures and match day write ups can be found on ourtwitter page @LeighEastWith two tough away fixtures coming up against arejuvenated Castleford Panthers and high flying FeatherstoneLions the next home game for the first team is against tabletoppers Millom on Saturday 25th July. The match will bestaged on the outside pitch, due to the upgrades to playingsurfaces, which will be taking place over the next few weeks.

For today’s look back at oldprogrammes we go back to 1949 andHunslet’s first post war visit to Leigh,their first ever to the Kirkhall Laneground. The match was staged on Saturday 8 Januarywith a 2-30pm kick-off and a modest 16-page programme was produced for supportersat a cost of threepence.James Hilton was the Leigh Chairman andJack Harding the vice-chairman and the otherboard members were Messrs Higgins, Palmer,Fletcher, Hesford and Rubin. Emlyn Jenkinswas the team manager and coach with BillHughes the trainer.In welcoming the visitors the programmeeditor remarked that Hunslet’s last visit toLeigh had been to the Mather Lane groundwhich had been lost during the war due tothe extension of the cable works. “We giveHunslet a cheerful welcome,” he wrote.“Speaking of Mather Lane, it was there in theold days that the “Cherry and Whites” nearlyheld a powerful Hunslet to a draw in theRugby League Cup. I gather that theirforwards had a great reputation and wereknown as the “Terrible Six.” The Yorkshiremenwent on to win the cup. A more recentmemory was our surprising and welcome winat Hunslet in November. There were somegloomy faces until that afternoon and thenwe all trotted out that threadbare saying ‘the

corner is turned.’ We still have our troublesbut let us forget them and look forward to agood game this afternoon.”Elsewhere in the programme the editorreflected on the Christmas period when Leighgained only one point. Chairman James Hiltonwas quoted: “I want to say that specialtactical talks between the players and MrJenkins have started this week.”Leigh made several changes to their side forHunslet’s visit. “But please do not get theidea that there is any panic,” the editorialcontinued. “They are made because of injury. Iregret to say that Jack Bowen has a suspectedfracture of the cheek-bone. Alf Edge andhooker Parr are alsoinjured. However, youwill welcome thereturn of Jimmy Roweand I don’t supposeBob Montford will befound wanting. By theway Jack Bowen iscoming up from Walesto live in the houseprepared for departedDesmond Clarkson.We hope his sojournin the town will be ahappy one.”Meanwhile Major Jack

Rubin had donated a magnificent silver cup tothe schoolboys’ league for competitionamongst the local schools towards the end ofeach season.Among the advertisers were Ward’s EnglishHats, famous for over a century and availablefrom Danby’s of Market St and Lord St, Leigh.The Spinning Jenny Snack Bar offered a quicksnack at a reasonable charge adjacent to theTrolley Bus Terminus and Leigh CivicRestaurant offered a good Tea after the game.Eze Football pools offered bigger dividendsand quicker returns and the Army Cadet Forcehad an appeal for donations. The Crown Hotelon Hope Street was the only public house tocarry an advert. Supporters could follow theirteam by using Lancashire United Transportand Duva Bread, “the best than can beproduced” was all the rage.The record books show that Hunslet won thegame 6-3 before a crowd of 8,500 spectators.Frank Daley scored Leigh’s try eight minutesafter half-time after W Burnell and Ted Carrollscored first-half tries for Hunslet. Leigh wenton to finish 18th in the league with 14 winsand five draws from 36 games, Hunsletfinishing two places higher.The Leigh team was: Ledgard; Sale, Daley, Baxter, Wood; Rowe,Riley; Johnson, Stephens, Coffey, Pawsey,Alder, Wheatley. Over the past six months we havebeen working with the Wigan YouthOffending Team and a group ofyoung offenders on the New Skillsprogramme. The New Skills programme aims toincrease the employability of 14-19 year-old young NEET residents throughchanging beneficiaries' attitudestowards learning, work and employmentby providing an environment at theLeigh Sports Village that motivates themby delivering several different elementssuch as teamwork, communication, selfcontrol, anger management and positivelife paths whilst using sport as aninnovative vehicle to engagement.“The staff (Michael Ostick, Mick Nanynand Carlie Unsworth) are amazing atkeeping the group engaged in activities,which is not always easy with lowattention spans and little or no

concentration, that’s the group not thelads!” commented Hannah Forbes, TrustManager.The programme is in full swing and hasbeen running for over 12 months nowand as part of the programme the youngadults are taken to Challenge 4 Changein Manchester to take part in a specialTeams not Gangs session.Team not Gangs is a partnership projectthat uses sport to tackle some of themajor issues surrounding gang culture inour communities. The project aims tohelp reduce anti-social behaviour, gangrelated activities, provide a pathway toprogression, improve personaldevelopment, communication skills andhelp the participants gain respect. The sessions are a hard-hitting insightinto what life in prison is really like withstaff members having over 70 years ofexperience of prison life in varied roles.

The participants come out of the sessionwith their eyes open to how easy it is togo down the wrong path in life.

“The Teams not Gangs session has reallymade me think about the choices I makein my everyday life. It has also made methink about the friends that I choose andhow this could affect me” commented aparticipant from the course.

The former Leigh halfback who is alsoChairman of the Leigh Centurions PlayersAssociation joins the Club in a full-timerole with immediate effect. Explaining the appointment LeighCenturions Head of Rugby and club ownerDerek Beaumont said: “We have madegreat strides to strengthen the on-fieldteam as the recent signings ofinternationals Gareth Hock, Micky Highamand Mathias Pala testify. “As we strive to better the club in all areaswe must be mindful that we have thenecessary infrastructure off the field tosupport the on-field ambitions and Jason’sappointment fulfils that objective. “Our Operations Director, Allan Rowley hasbeen poorly lately and as he fulfilled such avital full-time role in the Club’s structurehis absence has left a big hole. With Allan’sfull support we have appointed Jason totake over some of his roles andresponsibilities and as the Club grows thepair of them should be able to worktogether in the future. “Allan receives our full support and thebest wishes of everyone at the Club for avery speedy recovery and is making goodprogress and retains his fantastic sense ofhumour. “Jason was a popular player for Leigh whowas the second youngest player to play forthe Club. He earned Great Britain Under-21s honours and then moved on to play atthe highest level for clubs like Leeds andBradford and played at Wembley in the1996 Challenge Cup Final. “But Leigh has always been in his heartand he returned to play again at Leigh andlater had a spell as assistant coach to PaulTerzis. “In more recent years he has been aninspirational Chairman of the PlayersAssociation and the success of theAssociation is testimony to his drive anddedication. “Jason has put his teaching career on hold

in order to take on this role and we aregrateful to the staff at WestleighMethodists Primary School for allowing himto take on this role so quickly. “Jason will assist Commercial ExecutiveAmanda Lee on the commercial side aswell as overseeing many operational rolesand his drive, energy, ambition and love ofthe Club make him another great signing. “I know this appointment will also helpAllan to relax and take his time to recover.

He is so anxious about the Club I know hewas getting stressed that his good workwasn’t being continued and that isn’t goodfor him at this stage. “I would also like to thank everyone fortheir well wishes for Allan, not just our ownfans and sponsors but RFL officials andofficials of other clubs. Leigh Centurions’ latest signing,Mathias Pala made a try-scoring debutin the Reserves Championship gameagainst Dewsbury Rams at Leigh Eastand was in the 19-man squad for theLadbrokes Challenge Cup tie atWarrington Wolves. Mathias joined hisnew team-mates at the Club’s annualgolf day at Houghwood Golf Club andwas interviewed for a feature on theClub shown on BBC North WestTonight. He has quickly settled into lifein Leigh and is next up in the Set ofSix.Born in Carpentras, Mathias came throughthe ranks of his home town club and hasalso played for Limoux, Balmain Tigers inAustralia and St Esteve. He made his SuperLeague debut for the Dragons againstBradford Bulls in 2011 and made 33appearances for the club, scoring four tries. Mathias made his international debut forFrance against England in 2011 and playedfor France against Ireland, Wales andScotland in the 2014 EuropeanChampionship series, featuring in the final

two games as fullback and scoring twotries in the victory over Wales.

PLAY 1How did you first start playing RugbyLeague and where?I start played rugby when I was six-years-old at Carpentras, my home town (red andwhite shirt).

PLAY 2How did you come to sign for Catalansand what is it like to play for them?I was in Australia played for Balmain Tigerswhen Catalans rang me, I was 20 years oldand it was a dream as a kid to play forthem. When I arrived over there I made mydebut only two years later when TrentRobinson was Head Coach.

PLAY 4What is it like to represent yourcountry- you first came to Leigh withthe French team in 2011 didn't you?Representing my country is such an honour,when I was a child it was my dream, it’salways a good atmosphere when I put onthe French jersey and I feel proud. I trainedat Leigh with the French team in 2011 andwas very impressed with the facilities. Inever thought then that I would be trainingthere every day a few years later. I lookforward to playing England this year at

Leigh and I hope to have the support of theLeythers!

PLAY 5What's the difference between life inPerpignan and Leigh?My lifestyle in France was awesome. I couldtake my son to the beach every day whichwas just ten minutes from my house!, I alsolike to take him up the mountains to play inthe snow and ski – which was just 40minutes away from where I lived. Perhaps Iwill take him to Manchester to ski at theChill Factor.

LAST TACKLE PLAYWhat are your ambitions for yourselfand Leigh?I can’t wait to make my debut for Leighand earn my heritage number. At Catalansmy heritage number was 71. If I am thenext player to make my debut I wouldreceive the heritage number 1399 – Iwould be very proud to have this. I reallywant to play Super League next season –with Leigh. I will work hard work intraining and in games to reach thisobjective. We already train like a SuperLeague team and I think we deserve to bein this comp next year.
